POV: Elara

The doors of the ceremonial hall slammed shut behind me, muting the eruption of shouting voices and shattering glass.

I marched down the stone steps, the layers of my gown brushing against the gravel as I crossed the dark courtyard. The royal enforcers stationed at the gates stared at me in paralyzed shock, their hands hovering over their weapons but completely unable to move. No one had ever prepared them for a woman walking away from the Alpha King.

I slipped past the outer perimeter and retreated deep into the western edge of the estate, heading toward a small, abandoned stone greenhouse tucked away behind the overgrown rose gardens. It was a place no one visited, a perfect, temporary sanctuary.

I pushed the creaking wooden door open, and let out a long, shaky breath.

My heart was hammering, but my mind was perfectly clear. In my past life, when Kaelen had rejected me, the sensation had been a violent, agonizing tear that left my inner wolf bleeding and broken. I expected a similar pain now. I braced myself, leaning my back against the damp stone wall, waiting for the mate bond to snap, wither, and fade into a dull, hollow ache.

Suddenly, the greenhouse door was violently kicked open, slamming against the wall so hard the glass panes rattled.

"Have you completely lost your mind?!" Theron roared, his face entirely deformed by absolute rage as he stormed into the small space. His Beta aura exploded into the room, thick and suffocating, a heavy weight meant to force me onto my knees.

Right behind him was Lyra. Her golden hair was disheveled, and her face was flushed with a mixture of terror and fury.

"What did you just do, Elara?!" Lyra shrieked, her sweet, angelic voice entirely gone, replaced by a harsh, desperate squeak. "You just rejected the Alpha King! In front of every pack leader in the territory! Do you have any idea what you've done to our family? The royal guards are mobilizing! They are going to slaughter us because of your pathetic, rebellious little stunt!"

Theron gripped my shoulder, his large hand tightening until the bone groaned beneath my skin. "You are going back into that hall right now. You will drop to your knees, you will beg King Kaelen for forgiveness, and you will accept his mark if he is merciful enough to still give it to you. I will not let a worthless stray ruin my position in this kingdom!"

I looked down at his hand on my shoulder, then looked up into his furious, dark eyes.

I didn't flinch. My eyes were dead, cold, and entirely unbothered by his Beta pressure.

"Take your hand off me, Beta Voss," I said, my voice so low and dangerously calm it made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. My inner wolf bared her teeth in my mind, entirely unaffected by his rank. "You wanted me to accept whatever mate the Moon Goddess assigned without complaint. Well, the Goddess chose and I exercised my right to decline. The law allows it."

"The law doesn't apply to the King, you stupid girl!" Theron snarled, but the sheer, icy authority in my gaze actually made him hesitate. He slowly pulled his hand back, his knuckles trembling with rage.

"If the King wants to punish this pack, he will have to take it up with me," I said, stepping past him toward the door. I paused beside my step-sister, looking at her pale, sweating face. "Don't look so miserable, Lyra. I thought you'd be happy. The throne is wide open now."

Before she could form a reply, I walked out into the cool night air, leaving them both standing there, completely paralyzed by my utter lack of fear. I cold-shouldered them completely, walking away to find a quiet place to wait out the night.

***

Midnight struck with the distant chime of the palace clocks.

I was sitting on the edge of an old stone bench near the western wall when it hit me.

It wasn't the agonizing, tearing pain of a breaking bond.

Instead, a sudden, blinding spike of heat erupted directly behind my left ear, radiating down my neck and straight into my chest. I gasped, dropping to my knees on the grass as my skin began to burn with a terrifying intensity. I pulled back my hair, my fingers trembling as I touched the flesh.

My birthmark was glowing a brilliant silver under my skin, shining so brightly it cast a pale light over my hands.

And then, a massive, overwhelming torrent of emotion crashed through it, slamming into my mind like a tidal wave. It wasn't my own emotion. It was his.

I could feel Kaelen.

Through the invisible wire connecting our souls, I felt his absolute, blinding fury, a chaotic, raging storm that was currently ripping his private chambers apart. I felt his confusion, the agonizing sting of a pride that had been brutally shattered in front of his entire court. But worst of all, I felt his insomnia. A restless weight in his veins that made it impossible for him to close his eyes, a desperate, frantic need to track, to hunt, and to find the woman who had walked away from him.

The bond hadn't broken. It was locked.

I closed my eyes, feeling the double-sided weight of it. Because I had rejected the Alpha King before he could ever reject me, the Moon Goddess seemed to have refused to release either of us. The rejection from the female side had acted like a deadbolt, snapping the bond shut and doubling its strength.

Kaelen was trapped. He could feel everything I felt. He would feel every flicker of my pain, every whisper of my joy. He wouldn't be able to sleep, he wouldn't be able to find peace, and he would never, ever be able to take another mate or claim a Luna by his side unless I personally signed the registry to release him.

Without even meaning to, I had chained the most powerful Alpha in the kingdom to my very breath.

"Ha!" A small, breathless sound escaped my lips in the dark. It grew, bubbling up from the very depths of my chest until a loud, dark, and genuinely amused laugh echoed through the empty gardens.

I stood up slowly, wiping a single tear of laughter from my eye.

You wanted to make me a prisoner, Kaelen? I thought, looking toward the high towers of the royal palace in the distance. Now, you're the one in a cage and I'll make you beg to escape.

Kaelen’s POVI stood at the edge of the courtyard, watching as Elara walked out of the lower wing with Lyra trembling right beside her like a broken doll, and the yard was packed with hundreds of warriors and courtiers who had gathered to hear news of Julian’s invasion.Instead of a defensive war speech, Elara stepped up onto the dais, raised her hand to command absolute silence, and gestured for Lyra to take the stand, and through our bond, I could feel Elara’s cold focus vibrating straight into my chest, making my inner wolf throw back his head and howl with awe at her genius."Look at them," I whispered to Marcus, who was standing right beside me with his arm still in a bandage, and Marcus crossed his arms over his chest as he stared up at the platform."She is airing out every single dirty secret the old council tried to bury, Alpha, and nobody in this crowd is going to dare support Julian after they hear these names," Marcus muttered, his eyes fixed on Lyra as she opened the book

Elara’s POV"Your mother promised Julian half our central hunting territories in exchange for his backing during her coup," I murmured softly, watching Lyra’s hands shake so violently she dropped the journal onto the floorboards, and she looked up at me with absolute terror in her eyes."Which means Julian isn't just an invading warlord, because he’s coming to collect a debt your family legally signed away, and you’re going to put on a clean dress, walk out into the courtyard right beside me, and publicly announce every single name on that ledger before sunset," I continued, keeping my voice completely steady as I watched her process my words.Lyra opened her mouth to argue, gasping for breath as she realized I had just handed her a choice between public execution for treason or standing as my unwilling witness to destroy Julian's entire claim, and she shook her head back and forth rapidly."I can't do that, Elara, because if I stand up in front of the whole pack and read those names,

Lyra’s POVMy stomach plummeted into the moment Elara stepped into my cell, her heels clicking against the floor like a death march, and I scrambled backward until my spine hit the masonry, pulling my shawl tight across my chest as if it could shield me from her gaze. She didn't yell or threaten to throw me into the salt mines, and she didn't even raise her voice, but instead, she dropped a leather journal right onto my lap, which was my mother’s private diary detailing every alliance, debt, and blood-pact she had forged with Alpha Julian over the past decade.Elara leaned down close to my ear, her voice dropping into a whisper that made my blood run cold, and she asked me if I really thought my mother was smart enough to hide her tracks from the royal guards."I didn't know anything about those pages, Elara, I swear to you," I stammered, my hands shaking so badly I almost dropped the book onto the floor, and Elara just stared at me with her sharp eyes."You lived under the same roof

  • REBIRTH: THIS TIME ILL MAKE YOU BEG, ALPHA    Chapter 63

Elara’s POVWe needed leverage, not an army of panicked guards stumbling over each other in the dark, and I spun on my heel, ignoring Kaelen tracking right behind me, and marched straight toward the lower east wing where Lyra was still locked under surveillance, because the guards outside her door immediately snapped to attention and crossed their spears to block my path.I didn't hesitate, and I held up my palm, flashed the signet ring under the torchlight, and ordered them to unlock the latch immediately, while Lyra was sitting on the edge of her cot, her face pale, her hair tangled, looking like a cornered animal until the door swung wide open and she saw me standing framed in the doorway holding a stack of correspondence."What do you want from me now, Elara?" Lyra asked, her voice shaking as she pulled her knees up to her chest, and I stepped into the room with Kaelen right at my shoulder."You know very well what I want, Lyra, because your mother left behind a very interesting t

  • REBIRTH: THIS TIME ILL MAKE YOU BEG, ALPHA    Chapter 62

Kaelen’s POVI slammed my fist against the stone pillar so hard the masonry cracked beneath my knuckles, and my golden eyes burned with rage, because Julian was a bastard who had been waiting in the shadows for months, watching us deal with internal court corruption, and now he thought he could swoop in and carve up our core territories while our guard was down.I turned sharply toward Elara, ready to bark out a dozen defensive orders, but the calm look in her eyes instantly shut my mouth, and she wasn't panicking or drafting defensive barricades, but instead, a dark smile slowly crept across her lips as she adjusted the silver ring on her finger. She didn't want to play defense against Julian in the remote ridges, and she wanted to draw him straight into the capital's central arena and crush his entire pack structure in one single, brutal sweep."We cannot just wait for him to come to the capital, Elara, because our people in the ridges are defenseless right now," I said, stepping cl

Elara’s POVThe double doors of the hall banged open before I could even lower my hand from the railing, shattering the quiet aftermath of the council confrontation, and Marcus rushed inward with a bandage wrapped around his arm, panting heavily as he dropped onto one knee right before my boots.A pack messenger had just intercepted his patrol near the training ridge, bringing urgent news that completely upended our fragile peace, because a massive secondary pack under the command of Alpha Julian, a ruthless warlord who historically despised centralized pack rule, had just crossed our borders and seized the alpha reserves at Blackwood Ridge.Julian didn't send a letter or a diplomatic courier, but instead, he sent a severed wolf tail wrapped in silk straight to our gates as an open declaration of war, and my breath hitched, because for the first time all day, my pulse spiked with genuine fury."What do you mean he seized the reserves?" I asked, stepping forward while my hands clenched
