POV: Elara

The doors of the ceremonial hall slammed shut behind me, muting the eruption of shouting voices and shattering glass.

I marched down the stone steps, the layers of my gown brushing against the gravel as I crossed the dark courtyard. The royal enforcers stationed at the gates stared at me in paralyzed shock, their hands hovering over their weapons but completely unable to move. No one had ever prepared them for a woman walking away from the Alpha King.

I slipped past the outer perimeter and retreated deep into the western edge of the estate, heading toward a small, abandoned stone greenhouse tucked away behind the overgrown rose gardens. It was a place no one visited, a perfect, temporary sanctuary.

I pushed the creaking wooden door open, and let out a long, shaky breath.

My heart was hammering, but my mind was perfectly clear. In my past life, when Kaelen had rejected me, the sensation had been a violent, agonizing tear that left my inner wolf bleeding and broken. I expected a similar pain now. I braced myself, leaning my back against the damp stone wall, waiting for the mate bond to snap, wither, and fade into a dull, hollow ache.

Suddenly, the greenhouse door was violently kicked open, slamming against the wall so hard the glass panes rattled.

"Have you completely lost your mind?!" Theron roared, his face entirely deformed by absolute rage as he stormed into the small space. His Beta aura exploded into the room, thick and suffocating, a heavy weight meant to force me onto my knees.

Right behind him was Lyra. Her golden hair was disheveled, and her face was flushed with a mixture of terror and fury.

"What did you just do, Elara?!" Lyra shrieked, her sweet, angelic voice entirely gone, replaced by a harsh, desperate squeak. "You just rejected the Alpha King! In front of every pack leader in the territory! Do you have any idea what you've done to our family? The royal guards are mobilizing! They are going to slaughter us because of your pathetic, rebellious little stunt!"

Theron gripped my shoulder, his large hand tightening until the bone groaned beneath my skin. "You are going back into that hall right now. You will drop to your knees, you will beg King Kaelen for forgiveness, and you will accept his mark if he is merciful enough to still give it to you. I will not let a worthless stray ruin my position in this kingdom!"

I looked down at his hand on my shoulder, then looked up into his furious, dark eyes.

I didn't flinch. My eyes were dead, cold, and entirely unbothered by his Beta pressure.

"Take your hand off me, Beta Voss," I said, my voice so low and dangerously calm it made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. My inner wolf bared her teeth in my mind, entirely unaffected by his rank. "You wanted me to accept whatever mate the Moon Goddess assigned without complaint. Well, the Goddess chose and I exercised my right to decline. The law allows it."

"The law doesn't apply to the King, you stupid girl!" Theron snarled, but the sheer, icy authority in my gaze actually made him hesitate. He slowly pulled his hand back, his knuckles trembling with rage.

"If the King wants to punish this pack, he will have to take it up with me," I said, stepping past him toward the door. I paused beside my step-sister, looking at her pale, sweating face. "Don't look so miserable, Lyra. I thought you'd be happy. The throne is wide open now."

Before she could form a reply, I walked out into the cool night air, leaving them both standing there, completely paralyzed by my utter lack of fear. I cold-shouldered them completely, walking away to find a quiet place to wait out the night.

***

Midnight struck with the distant chime of the palace clocks.

I was sitting on the edge of an old stone bench near the western wall when it hit me.

It wasn't the agonizing, tearing pain of a breaking bond.

Instead, a sudden, blinding spike of heat erupted directly behind my left ear, radiating down my neck and straight into my chest. I gasped, dropping to my knees on the grass as my skin began to burn with a terrifying intensity. I pulled back my hair, my fingers trembling as I touched the flesh.

My birthmark was glowing a brilliant silver under my skin, shining so brightly it cast a pale light over my hands.

And then, a massive, overwhelming torrent of emotion crashed through it, slamming into my mind like a tidal wave. It wasn't my own emotion. It was his.

I could feel Kaelen.

Through the invisible wire connecting our souls, I felt his absolute, blinding fury, a chaotic, raging storm that was currently ripping his private chambers apart. I felt his confusion, the agonizing sting of a pride that had been brutally shattered in front of his entire court. But worst of all, I felt his insomnia. A restless weight in his veins that made it impossible for him to close his eyes, a desperate, frantic need to track, to hunt, and to find the woman who had walked away from him.

The bond hadn't broken. It was locked.

I closed my eyes, feeling the double-sided weight of it. Because I had rejected the Alpha King before he could ever reject me, the Moon Goddess seemed to have refused to release either of us. The rejection from the female side had acted like a deadbolt, snapping the bond shut and doubling its strength.

Kaelen was trapped. He could feel everything I felt. He would feel every flicker of my pain, every whisper of my joy. He wouldn't be able to sleep, he wouldn't be able to find peace, and he would never, ever be able to take another mate or claim a Luna by his side unless I personally signed the registry to release him.

Without even meaning to, I had chained the most powerful Alpha in the kingdom to my very breath.

"Ha!" A small, breathless sound escaped my lips in the dark. It grew, bubbling up from the very depths of my chest until a loud, dark, and genuinely amused laugh echoed through the empty gardens.

I stood up slowly, wiping a single tear of laughter from my eye.

You wanted to make me a prisoner, Kaelen? I thought, looking toward the high towers of the royal palace in the distance. Now, you're the one in a cage and I'll make you beg to escape.

Elara’s POVPlop.Another hard cherry pit sailed cleanly through the leaves, landing right into the center of Lyra’s perfect golden curls."Ugh! What is wrong with this disgusting garden?" Lyra hissed, violently swatting at the top of her head as she took a frantic step backward. She was practically vibrating with anxiety under the pale moonlight, her face turning a sour shade of pale. "Cassian, I am serious! Something keeps hitting me! These oversized palace bugs are completely out of control. We need to leave right now before one of them ruins my silk.""It's just the old dropping acorns, Lyra, shut up and listen," Cassian muttered, not even looking up as his fingers traced the heavy wax seal on his leather scroll case.I leaned my back against the rough tree trunk, casually swinging one boot over the empty air as I popped another dark fruit into my mouth. This was honestly better than any theater performance in the capital. The two vipers were standing thirty feet directly beneath

Kaelen’s POVMy eyes snapped open, my body bolting upright in bed as a sudden, shockwave of adrenaline crashed straight through the locked mate bond.I was gasping for air, my chest heaving up and down under the sheets as a cold sweat broke out across my forehead. I threw my head back, my hand instantly flying to the crescent birthmark behind my left ear. It wasn't humming anymore; it was violently vibrating with an electric current that felt like a literal live wire pressing against my pulse. It was 11:45 PM.The adrenaline hitting my system wasn't mine. It was hers. But it wasn't the frantic panic of a girl running for her life; it was this icy, calculated thrill mixed with an intense, suffocating level of stealth. Through our locked wire, Elara’s mind was broadcasting a heavy, dead silence—a quiet, dangerous focus that told me she was actively hunting in the dark. My inner wolf instantly stood up in the back of my mind, his ears pinned back as he let out a low, menacing growl. He k

Elara’s POV"Pick up the pace, you sloths!" I shouted from my comfortable spot on the stone balcony, taking a slow sip of my morning tea. "A three-legged mule could complete this perimeter track faster than a royal vanguard squad! Move it!"Down in the main courtyard, fifty low-ranking enforcers were currently questioning every single choice that had led them to a career in the royal military. Kaelen’s traditional leadership had left these guards looking too stiff, comfortable, and lazy. They spent their days standing like stone statues outside empty ballrooms, completely soft from years of predictable palace schedules. Not under my watch. I had commanded Wren to gather them at dawn, and now the central training yard had been completely transformed into a ridiculous, high-intensity obstacle course."Keep your footing on the grease, boys!" Wren yelled, standing near the center ring with his arms crossed, a wicked grin plastered across his face.A row of six heavy wooden logs had been

Kaelen’s POVThe midnight-blue roses hissed as the fire swallowed the rare, velvety petals, turning the expensive stems to black ash in a matter of seconds. I slammed my hand against the stone mantelpiece, my chest heaving up and down as a rough, monstrous growl tore out of my throat."I am going to rip his throat out," I muttered, my eyes flashing a dangerous, blinding gold in the dim light of the study."You look like a complete lunatic, Kaelen," Idris said flat out from the doorway. He walked into the room, carrying a fresh stack of diplomatic letters and pack treaties, completely ignoring the smoke rising from the hearth. He stopped a few feet away from the desk, looking at the empty vase I’d violently cleaned out ten minutes ago after sneaking into Elara's outer lounge to snatch Cassian's stupid gift. "Are you seriously breaking royal protocol over a bouquet of flowers? You're the Alpha King, not a jealous teenager tracking his crush in the corridors.""He was standing in her spa

  • REBIRTH: THIS TIME ILL MAKE YOU BEG, ALPHA    Chapter 27

Elara’s POVI pushed right past a completely stunned Kaelen, the stiff fabric of my silver-trimmed jacket brushing against his chest as I left him standing frozen between the high shelves. I didn't turn back to watch him try to process my words. I had actual work to do, and the Alpha King’s lingering shock was just white noise buzzing behind my left ear.I headed deeper into the archive vaults, my boots clicking softly against the old stone floor as the overhead torches grew sparse. The air back here smelled like decaying parchment and centuries of dust, a dead zone where the palace staff rarely ventured. I reached the very end of the historic aisle, slid my fingers along the hidden groove of a rotting wooden panel, and pushed. The wall gave way with a low, scraping groan, revealing a small, secret back room illuminated by a single candle.Queen Mother Alaria was already waiting for me, sitting at a small iron table. She looked pale, her features drawn tight under her regal headpiece,

Kaelen’s POVThe high dining hall was way too loud for the middle of the morning. Lyra was currently having a full-blown, hysterical meltdown right in front of the entire royal court, her breathless shrieks echoing against the ceiling like a wounded animal."It's a mistake! There is no way my father would just abandon me!" Lyra sobbed, her hands clawing desperately at the fabric of her wet gown as tears ran down her pale cheeks. She looked completely undone, her perfect blonde curls sticking to her face as her chest heaved with wild breaths. "Kaelen, please! You have to do something! He was perfectly fine yesterday! Someone forced him to do this! Someone threatened him!"I didn't move a single inch to help her. I didn't offer her a tissue, I didn't reach out to pat her shoulder, and I didn't give her a single shred of royal comfort. My eyes were completely locked on the archway across the room, unbothered by the screaming theater production happening in the center of the floor. She ca
