Chapter 2

Author: Potentia
This year's pack-wide coming-of-age ceremony notice came unusually late. I didn't find out until that morning.

The notice said that every wolf who had just reached adulthood had to be escorted into the ceremony hall by a family member. There would also be a blessing ceremony where a family member would offer the newly adult wolves their good wishes.

I forwarded the notice to Mother.

She replied nonchalantly, "Go find your brother. There are too many things going on at the council today, so I probably won't be able to make it."

I forwarded the notice to Rhys as well.

He replied dismissively, "Do you really have to come to me about something this trivial? When are you going to grow up?"

I read both messages several times.

I replied to each of them with the same word. "Okay."

I went to the pack's town hall and found my teacher, Mira Carlton. Aside from Sienna, she was the only wolf in the entire pack who had ever treated me kindly.

When the rogue wolf injured me and I couldn't walk, she had found me and carried me back. She had taken me to the infirmary for treatment.

Later, after learning how my family treated me, she had helped me every step of the way when I decided to leave for Northland.

"Ms. Carlton, will you be my guardian for the coming-of-age ceremony?"

I looked at her hopefully.

Mira thought for a moment and clarified, "You mean you want me to be the one who gives you your blessing?"

"Yes. I think you're the best person to do that."

Mira smiled at me, looking genuinely pleased. She patted me on the shoulder and said, "Then I'll have to prepare a big gift for you!"

The coming-of-age ceremony was held that evening. The shrine was packed with the families of the young wolves.

One by one, the wolves who had reached adulthood that year were escorted inside by their families. Their elders rested a hand on their heads and gave them their most heartfelt blessings.

Sienna didn't have any blood relatives. Yet, Mother had personally made her ceremonial outfit, and Rhys had embroidered the gold thread along the cuffs himself.

So that was what she had been doing at home all this time. She'd been making Sienna's clothes.

One blessing after another filled the shrine. Everyone was smiling and celebrating.

When it was Sienna's turn, the room suddenly fell silent. The video showed only the side of someone's face and part of a wrist. But even half of that face was enough for nearly everyone in the pack to recognize the person in the video.

The video ended, but the screen didn't go dark. Another person appeared. He had his back to the camera with his left arm resting casually against the back of a chair. There was a faint, old scar between his thumb and forefinger.

It was the scar Rhys had gotten while hunting when he was younger. Almost everyone in the room recognized the two people in the videos.

"I can't believe the previous Luna went to this much trouble for that girl. She even recorded a video for her." I heard someone whisper nearby.

Another wolf turned to her friend, practically starry-eyed. "Alpha Rhys has such a pleasant voice. I love it."

Sienna stood with tears in her eyes as the entire room erupted into applause.

Mira came over and patted my head.

I looked at her and asked, "Ms. Carlton, is there any news about Northland?"

She replied, "I just got an update today. Everything is moving forward nicely. Don't worry."

Then, she gave me her blessing like a real mother would, telling me that one day I'd grow into a fine wolf.

Before she left, Mira also gave me a packet of herbs. "You've always been weak. Simmer this and drink it consistently. It'll help."

Snow began falling heavily outside as the ceremony ended. I'd always had poor health, and I'd worn formal clothes for the ceremony that evening. They were far too thin for the weather. It didn't take long before I was freezing.

Snow covered the steps, quickly forming a thin layer of white. To get back to my den, I had to cross the entire forest. Even if I walked quickly, it would take more than 30 minutes.

I remembered that Rhys was headed in roughly the same direction that evening. Judging by the time, he should have been on his way back. I messaged him and asked if he could give me a ride since he was passing by anyway.

Suddenly, a voice came from behind me. "Wren, do you want to come with us?"

It was a girl from my combat class. We weren't close, but I'd heard she was kind and often shared the food she cooked with other wolves.

She was sitting in a car and waving at me.

I smiled at her and said, "We're going in different directions. I'll go home on my own. I don't want to trouble you guys, but thanks!"

I kept walking.

Halfway home, a car passed me. Sienna got into the passenger seat, holding a potion Mother had prepared for her. Rhys had gotten out of the car to hold an umbrella over her while reminding her to watch out for the ice beneath her feet.

He saw me, but he didn't stop. I didn't look back either.

By the time I reached the den, the snow on my boots had melted. It soaked the rug by the entrance.

When Mother walked in and saw it, her expression darkened immediately. "What happened, Wren? I just made this new rug this year. You're going to ruin it if you keep doing this."

Her tone was kind of harsh.

I explained, "The snow was really heavy. I'm sorry. I'll clean it up."

"Hurry up and wipe it down," she ordered, taking a dry cloth from behind the door and tossing it at me.

Then, she added, "Can't you make things a little easier for me? According to pack rules, you should kneel outside the shrine until dawn."

The old me would have obeyed immediately. But this time, I simply picked up the cloth and wiped the melted snow from the floor.

I said, "I'll clean the rug, but I'm not kneeling anymore."

Mother stared at me in shock.

I didn't explain. I turned and went back to my room.

Two days remained before Northland confirmed my transfer.

By the time I went downstairs, the snow had already piled up to my ankles. Cerys and Rhys were still standing at the door without umbrellas, their shoulders covered in white snow. When Cerys saw me, she took a step forward. "Wren, come home with me."I countered, "What? So I can go back to being the daughter you never loved? So I can get my leg torn apart by a rogue wolf and be left to die alone in the forest?" I gave her a bitter smile and said, "You clearly know how to be a good mother and a good brother. Why don't you go be one big happy family with Sienna? Why did you come looking for me?"Cerys clenched her hand inside her sleeve and said, "I didn't know how to cherish you before. I was wrong to do that. Please come home with me, okay?""Then tell me. What exactly did you do wrong?"She froze, unable to come up with an answer."I've said everything I needed to say about how you hurt me. So, we're even now."I reached up and straightened the brim of her hat. I added, "I'

This was the first time Sienna had sat to Cerys's right. That was traditionally the eldest daughter's seat. During major council meetings, it had been empty for a very long time.Cerys straightened Sienna's collar and glanced at her. "Make a good impression today."That day, Sienna presented some good news that benefited the pack. The council elders even entrusted her with calculating the pack's winter provisions. She looked at Cerys expectantly, clearly hoping for praise.Cerys only said one thing. "Good job."On her way home, Sienna went to find Rhys. "I finally have responsibilities in the pack, Rhys. You promised that if I secured a job, you'd take me out to play."Rhys was silent for a moment. "Forget it. I've been pretty busy lately."Sienna had officially become an Ashford. Fewer and fewer people in the pack talked about me. However, she found her beloved mother and brother gradually distancing themselves from her.She had no idea what she did wrong. It felt like, no mat

When I arrived, a thick layer of snow had settled upon Northland.Someone was standing at the station holding a sign. He was waiting for me.The sign had my name on it, and it read, "Welcome to Northland, Wren Ashford."The man holding it looked elderly. When he noticed me staring at the sign, he quickly lowered it and hurried over to take my luggage. He carried my suitcase and handed me a heavy coat."It's much colder here than in your old pack," he said. "Put this on, or you'll freeze.""How did you know I was Wren?" I asked."We made sure to learn about you beforehand. Otherwise, we might accidentally offend you once we start living together."He shoved the coat into my arms and, before I could say anything else, led me toward the car.The car moved slowly through the snow. Everything on both sides of the road was white. I could barely see anything. After we'd driven for a while, I asked, "Which dorm did the Northland Academy assign me?"The man answered, "You weren't assi

Mira stayed with me on the train all the way to the Blackpine pack's border. When we reached the checkpoint, she watched as I went through the inspection and had my travel documents checked before getting off the train. We hugged and said our goodbyes.I watched through the window as she stepped off the train. She stood on the platform and waved at me through the glass. When the train started moving again, a notification suddenly popped up on my phone. It read, "Dear Wren Ashford, welcome to the Northland Academy. You are now officially enrolled as a student of our academy. If you are a resident of another pack, you will receive the same benefits as Northland residents while attending the academy."Once your pack registration transfer is complete, the mind-link connecting you to your former pack will automatically be severed."I replied to confirm that I'd read the message and took a screenshot.Even if Rhys came after me himself now, he would be too late.…By the time Cerys

I watched from outside the window as Mother locked my pack ID inside a cabinet. It wasn't even dawn yet. I stood there silently, watching her put my papers away with her back turned to me, as if she were afraid I'd try to take them back. She secured the cabinet with three separate locks.I returned to my room and started packing. That was when I realized just how little of this house actually belonged to me.I packed two changes of clothes, a dagger I kept for self-defense, the bag of herbs from Mira, and the moonstone. The smell of smoke wafted in from the yard, so I went downstairs to check. Rhys was crouched beside the wall, feeding sheets of paper into a fire one by one. They were the backup documents I'd kept in my room.Even when he saw me, his hands never stopped moving. He said, "I went into your room and took these. Don't read too much into it. Just stay here in the pack. When you're a little older, I'll arrange a position for you. Wouldn't a quiet, stable life be bette

Mira came by in the afternoon to pick up a form that required my signature. She said, "Someone from Northland came by today. They wanted to know roughly how soon you would arrive after your transfer was approved so that they could arrange a place for you to stay."I wrote the date and my name on the form while replying, "As soon as the transfer is confirmed, I can leave anytime."Feeling curious, I asked, "Honestly, I don't think I'm particularly talented at anything. Why did they choose me?""Do you remember those two strangely dressed wolves we ran into at the infirmary when I took you there after you injured your leg?" Mira responded.Of course I remembered. Two wolves had been lying in the beds beside mine that day. They wore blue uniforms that looked nothing like what we wore in our pack. I'd thought it was strange, but I'd been afraid that asking too many questions would only cause trouble, so I'd kept quiet. That afternoon, they'd spoken with Mira for a while before askin
