Chapter 2

Author: Spotted Cat
Richard sighed and tried to comfort me. "If things get too difficult with the Noctis family... Maybe Clara can help you."

When Clara learned that I had chosen to marry into the Noctis family, she could not resist sneering right in front of me. "Irene, you might not be able to marry Eli, but why settle for some lowly vampire family that has long since fallen? Don't starve to death before you even get pregnant. I hear they can barely feed themselves.

"The Valtore family is the strongest and richest of the five great vampire families. Even their ghouls are carefully fed rare herbs. If life gets too hard for you, I can pack up some scraps and send them over."

Clara covered her mouth and burst out laughing, ignoring the embarrassed looks from the servants around her.

Clara believed that with the Valtore family's vast resources and Eli's faithfulness, she would be pregnant in no time. She was certain I would lose my chance to be the first to give birth to a hybrid.

However, she had no idea how difficult it was for humans and vampires to have children together. She also had no idea how desperately Eli wanted an heir.

In my previous life, when I still was not pregnant after six months of marriage, he had started taking his frustration out on me, tormenting me day and night. He only calmed down and let things ease after I used a secret technique to get pregnant and gave birth to Seren, securing the Valtore family's power and ruling status.

I smiled calmly at Clara. "Oh, my dear sister. Don't worry about me. I've chosen my husband, and I won't regret it."

"What are you so proud of? You're marrying a nobody!" Clara growled, furious at my calm. She slammed a hand on the table, pastries falling to the floor. "I'll be the first to get pregnant. My child will be the alliance's next ruler!"

I ignored her tantrum and kept preparing for the wedding that was in three days.

Regardless of everything, she was right about one thing. The Noctis family really was poor. I was worried they might not even be able to afford a decent gift, so I planned to make one myself.

However, I was pleasantly surprised when Lorian brought my wedding dress over personally that night.

It was also the first time I could see his face clearly. His skin was pale, almost ghost white, and his golden eyes looked quietly mysterious. A teardrop-shaped mole at the corner of his eye softened his otherwise cold appearance.

A pale golden gown lay inside an exquisite box. It was not extravagant, but I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. There were no jewels, but as the light shifted, faint, ancient patterns appeared on the gold satin.

How elegant and refined.

"Irene," Lorian said calmly, "This gown was made especially for brides who would marry into the Noctis family. The last time it was worn was a thousand years ago. Now, it's yours."

His gaze was deliberately distant, as though he was not the man about to marry me. "This is the first time our family has welcomed a human bride. If there's anything wrong, please tell me. I'll do my best to fulfill your request."

"Thank you," I said. "I really like it."

Just as I was about to put the dress away, Clara walked in on Eli's arm with a smug smile. "Irene, don't tell me that's your only dress. Eli had ten dresses made especially for me. Ten!"

Eli looked down at Clara affectionately.

Clara only knew that the Valtore family was powerful and faithful. She did not know that their power and fidelity came from how much they valued children and their obsession with having heirs. If she failed to get pregnant, would Eli still treat her so gently?

Lorian clenched his fists, then raised his head and met my eyes. "Irene, in the name of the Noctis family, I swear that I'll never betray you for as long as I live."

Clara scoffed. "Anyone can make pretty promises. What matters is whether you can actually have a child."

I knew all Clara could think about now was having a child. Her infertility in our previous life had become her obsession, and all she wanted to do now was to get pregnant. She had even moved into Eli's home before marrying him because of that very purpose.

In that sense, she and Eli truly were a perfect match. They were both obsessed with having an heir.

I said, "Clara, maybe you should focus on your own wedding. Otherwise, people might think you have your eyes on my fiancé."

I smiled faintly, ignoring Clara and Eli's irritated expressions, then took Lorian's hand as I walked away. Behind me, I could still hear Clara whispering in Eli's arms. Her voice was soft but clear enough for me to hear the words "pregnancy", "child", and "next ruler".

Oh, my dear sister… Even with a second life, she still thought having a child was her only way to gain power.

A fool, through and through.

It was clear by this point that Clara had brought all of this upon herself. Her own greed had ruined her. The scandal once again made the Valtore family a laughingstock among the vampires. Rumors spread that Eli was impotent, which was why his wife had betrayed him and slept with other men. He had even bought aphrodisiacs from lowly vampire families. Eli was already in a terrible mood. He would only treat Clara with more cruelty as those rumors spread… - A month later, I was at home sewing clothes for my son. I went up to the attic for some more fabric for a moment. Perhaps this was what they called fate. Lorian had named this child Seren too, explaining that in an ancient family myth, the name stood for health and safety. But when I came back, I noticed the handkerchief was missing from the table. It was a golden handkerchief, embroidered with the Noctis family crest. Seren's cradle was also empty. I screamed, "Lorian! Seren's gone!" Lorian teleported down from his

"My lady, just push a little harder! The baby's almost out!" The midwife said to me. There was none of the agonizing pain I had suffered in my previous life. Everything went remarkably smoothly this time. I already heard a baby's loud wail before I could even cry out in pain. "The baby's here!" The midwife excitedly held the baby and walked over to Lorian. "Lord Lorian, Lady Irene, it's a boy!" Lorian carefully took the baby and brought him over to me. He gently said, "Irene, look. This is our baby boy." I reached out a finger and lightly touched the baby's soft cheek. "Yes... He's our little boy." Perhaps it was because of our blood ties, but the baby stopped crying as soon as I touched him. He opened his big eyes and looked at me. His eyes were of an exceptionally pale golden shade. They were a little lighter than Lorian's bright golden eyes and a little darker than my amber eyes. Deep within his pupils was a faint ring of thin golden markings that looked like the sun.

The doctor arrived at our room in less than fifteen minutes. He then started to check me with a serious expression. The room was unusually quiet. Lorian sat beside me, looking worried. Finally, the doctor stood and bowed to congratulate us. "Congratulations, Lord Lorian. Lady Irene is two months pregnant. From the signs I can sense, she should be giving birth in four months. "Lord Lorian, due to your exceptionally powerful pure bloodline, please stay by Lady Irene's side until she gives birth and use your aura to nourish the baby." Everything was making sense until the doctor's last sentence. "Wait. What do you mean 'powerful'? What pure bloodline?" I blinked. "Lorian, aren't you from a fallen vampire family?" Lorian chuckled and gently stroked my head. "My dear, your husband is the only pureblood vampire still alive." I stared blankly at him for several seconds. "Doesn't that mean you're several thousand years old?" Lorian's smile froze, and he suddenly looked nervou

The elders from the Morven and Ravana families took turns to say, "We won't recognize this boy. The original agreement is clear. The child must be born to a human and the eldest son of a vampire family." "If the Valtore family ignores the rules like this, what happens to the traditions our families have upheld since ancient times? Who knows what kind of monster we'll end up with?" "Hmph. This will require unanimous agreement from all four families. The Morven and Ravana families are firmly against this." The Deville elder stood quietly to one side and stated his family's position as well. "Our family left worldly affairs behind long ago. We will not take part in such a political decision." Of the four families, one abstained, two opposed it, and one was absent, but the outcome was already clear. Hearing that destroyed Eli's last bit of hope. His rage took over again. "Clara, look at what you've done! Your actions have humiliated the entire Valtore family!" - After watchin

"Clara, whose bastard son is this? Who did you sleep with behind my back? Tell me the truth right now, or I'll kill this bastard myself!" Richard went pale. He quickly stepped forward to stop Eli despite how scared he was. "Eli, calm down. This has to be a misunderstanding. Clara loves you so much. How could she possibly betray you?" Richard's words gave Clara some courage. She held the baby up to Eli and gently said, "Eli, look. His nose and mouth are exactly like yours. You two look so much alike. How could he not be your son?" Eli took the baby from her with a cold expression. The boy had been sleeping peacefully, but the moment he saw Eli's face, he started wailing. The baby's desperate cries pierced my heart like a knife, bringing back the sound of Seren screaming in the flames in my previous life. A sharp pain tore through my chest, and I could barely breathe. Lorian noticed my distress and gently covered my ears, thinking I could not stand the baby's crying. "Filthy

"Irene, I know you chose me because you had no other choice. But I promise I'll never let you suffer as long as I'm here." I instinctively turned at the sound of Lorian's voice and bumped into his chest. I caught a unique but pleasant scent, and I looked up at him as I spoke slowly, "Lorian, I chose you because I wanted to." An unreadable expression appeared in Lorian's eyes. "...Alright, I understand." He sounded sincere and solemn, as if he had been waiting for a millennium. - Three days later, the wedding took place as planned, and both weddings were held in the same ancient castle. The Valtore family's ceremony was even grander than it had been in my previous life. They even invited Prince Kyle, who had not appeared in public for a century. The other human and vampire nobles turned out in force as well. The Noctis family's ceremony was much quieter. No important guests came, and only a few family members were there. However, every one of them looked genuinely happy th
