Chapter 1

"Sierra Phillips, what's the answer for this question? Stand up and answer me!"

Ms. Fran Dickson, my homeroom teacher, suddenly called out to me, her voice echoing through the classroom. When she didn't hear me respond, she turned around and threw half a piece of chalk squarely at my forehead.

"You again! Dozing off again in class! Do you even want to go to college after this? You might as well just go straight home now if all you're going to do is sleep! If I see anyone else sleeping in class again…"

Her loud roar suddenly jolted me awake. However, she still continued nagging next to me after that.

I blinked sleepily in confusion, realizing that everyone's attention was on me now.

A sudden thought crept into my head. Had I been born again?

My deskmate, Miranda Krause, gently nudged me from the side, signaling for me to stop provoking Ms. Dickson.

Miranda's grades had always been horrible. She was almost always at the bottom of the class. And yet, Ms. Dickson insisted on putting both of us together as deskmates because she wanted to foster a learning atmosphere by putting the top student with the worst student in class.

That was the reason why I had been deskmates with Miranda for all three years of high school. And yet, her grades remained consistently dismal.

The moment I saw her face again, I was very sure I wasn't dreaming anymore.

It was exactly that face that ruined me in my past life!

I suddenly felt my fury boiling in my chest.

In my past life, for some reason, my SAT papers had turned completely blank, as if I had never written down a single word in any of my answer sheets. Meanwhile, Miranda turned out to be the top scorer in school, enjoying the honor and recognition that should have been mine.

The truth was that she had somehow managed to bind with a system that allowed her to switch the exam papers, and thus her grades, with anyone she wanted.

After I jumped to my death in my past life, my soul had continued wandering around on earth, and I finally learned the truth about Miranda's grades at her home.

At the time, she was lying in bed, seemingly talking to herself while staring at a fixed point like she was talking to someone invisible.

"What else can you do for me other than swapping grades, System?"

"If that's the case, then I'm going to rely on you for all my exams next time."

Then, for some reason, the topic somehow changed to me. Yet, the next words that spilled from her mouth were the most shameless ones I'd ever heard.

"Why should I even feel sorry for Sierra? She deserved it! What right does she have to be so popular and well-liked in school just because she has good grades?

"And it's not like I killed her or anything. I just swapped her grades with mine. It's her own fault for jumping off the building because she couldn't handle the pressure. You can't possibly pin the blame on me.

"And what really is the big deal anyway? She could have just repeated the year and retaken the exam again if she were really that hardworking. Who told her to jump to her death? It's her own fault for being so emotional about it."

Over the past three years, I tirelessly helped Miranda revise right before the exams, patiently explaining every answer she got wrong. Even when I was down with a fever, I still compiled a list of her mistakes and explained each one meticulously.

But instead of being grateful, she just decided to swap out her grades for mine and drive me to suicide.

While I was still lost in my memories, Ms. Dickson's roar pulled me back to reality once again.

"Sierra Phillips! Get up and leave the class now!"

Miranda hurriedly stood up, trying to ease the tense atmosphere as she explained, "Ms. Dickson, Sierra told me that she'd been studying too hard till very late at night these days, and she's very exhausted. She's been very hardworking, Ms. Dickson. Please don't get mad at her anymore."

She then glanced at me cautiously, before lowering her head and pretending to sob.

As the incident escalated, the colleges ultimately decided to kick Trevor out after all.He and Miranda were originally just regular schoolmates. However, Trevor joined a delinquent group of people outside of school, and Miranda also happened to be part of that group, which was how their relationship even began.Usually, groups of delinquent teenagers like them who often did terribly academically had some sort of abnormal obsession and infatuation with academic performance. Trevor had ended up getting influenced by that atmosphere, so he confessed his feelings to me just so that he could try to improve his status within the group. However, their group wasn't very big, and everyone already knew about his relationship with Miranda anyway. So, when the stabbing incident occurred, Trevor quickly went viral on social media. When his family eventually found out about his terrible records in school over the past few days, they flew into a rage and sent him abroad to a disciplinary cam

"Please officer! I'm begging you!" Miranda's mom, Mrs. Krause, begged, falling to her knees and grabbing an officer's pant leg as she tried to beg for mercy on Miranda's behalf."I promise that Mimi is a very sweet and obedient child! It was… It was definitely Trevor's fault!"Mrs. Krause also didn't care about getting the full story before immediately pinning the blame on someone else to avoid responsibility. With a mother like her, it was no wonder that Miranda had turned out the way she was. After getting permission from the officer, I walked into the interrogation room to see Miranda.Well, technically, I was just there to bid goodbye to her. When I walked into the room with a contemptuous smile on my face, Miranda's pale face turned red with anger almost immediately. It was obvious that the mere sight of me angered her."I heard that Trevor put some sort of cursed paper in your bag. I wonder if you actually found it?" I asked, stating the obvious. The talisman had already b

My face turned solemn as I pretended to be angry, pinching Trevor's nose coquettishly. "Why are you still pretending and acting dumb with me?"Truth be told, Miranda, Trevor actually told me about you and your 'grade-swapping system' a long time ago. But he didn't want me to flunk my SATs for real, so he agreed to play along with you to protect me."Miranda's face turned pale almost instantly. She pointed a finger in Trevor's face in shock, unable to come up with a word.Meanwhile, Trevor just let me roll with it without exposing my very obvious lies. After all, it wouldn't matter anyway as long as he got bragging rights back. That was the most important thing of all."Trevor Coffey! I'm going to kill you!"Miranda's rebellious nature completely erupted then and there. She suddenly pulled a knife out of her bag and stabbed Trevor in the abdomen. He let out a painful hiss and reacted instantly by kicking Miranda right off, sending her flying. They both then crumpled to the ground,

Right after that, messages began flooding in one after another in the family group chat with the rest of our relatives."Hey, Miguel! Congrats on having such a smart daughter like Sierra!""When do you think Sierra will be free to tutor my son sometime? He's sitting for the SATs next year and I'm worried to death about him!"The relatives who mocked us in my past life were now flooding the group chat with tons of congratulatory messages. Some even called Mom and Dad up to congratulate them in person, their voices polite yet fake.To my surprise, I even got a call from my high school principal himself, who congratulated me personally. He was at a loss for words because I was the top scorer in the entire district, and thus, I would be crowned valedictorian.Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Miranda and Trevor were both faced with a reality completely different from mine. They were extremely confused by the sudden turn of events."Miranda Krause! You'd better have a proper expla

Miranda followed me out of the exam hall, visibly relaxing after hearing what I said. However, her expression quickly changed to an arrogant sneer as she scoffed at me."What do you mean by 'you got it all figured out'? I sure hope you didn't faint during the exam just now because I saw that your paper was completely blank when you handed it in."Mom's face turned pale at that. She grabbed me by my shoulders anxiously and asked, "Didn't you write anything down, Sia? Do you remember writing anything at all?"I hugged Mom back tightly and reassured her many times that I had indeed written down all of my answers perfectly before she finally calmed down. Then, I turned to Miranda and scoffed coldly. "I think you should be the one thinking about it carefully. Are you sure that you weren't the one who handed in the blank answer sheets instead?"However, she didn't seem the least bit angered by my words. She just got even haughtier and stalked off with her hand wrapped around Trevor's ar

Trevor was terrified that he wouldn't be able to brag about me anymore in the future if I were to dump him now.I just huddled in a corner, my body trembling slightly as I said in a voice choked with sobs, "I didn't even want to say anything about you taking my seat and flirting with Miranda, but how could you keep harassing me every day just for her sake?"I've already told you many times that I never bullied your girlfriend! I didn't do it!"My sudden accusations sparked a flurry of discussion among my other classmates. They all looked at me with pity in their eyes.I was usually a very quiet student at the top of my class. Meanwhile, Miranda was the typical school bully who often hung out with gangsters and hooligans outside of school. Everyone had a bad impression of her.At first, they thought that Miranda would at least tone down as the SATs drew closer, but as it turned out, she'd only been putting on an act."What? Miranda and Trevor are dating?""I saw her running to th
