Darkness was all that Ella could see.
And pain was all she felt.
It had been 2 months 4 days and who-knows-how-many hours that she was locked in this dark cell where sunlight never seemed to reach.
It was difficult to even distinguish day from night.
The high-pitched squeaking of the mice constantly reminded her of the company she had inside the cell.
They felt tiny to touch but they were quite the vicious ones. When they dug their large teeth in her brutally injured skin, a chunk of flesh would tumble out.
It was painful at first. It still was. But to some extent, she had grown numb to it.
Whoever locked her in the cell had left her in the company of these mice and a dagger, stating that she should kill herself when things got too painful.
She picked up the knife and slashed it across her thigh where one can feel multiple cuts.
2 months and 5 days.
She would not die here in this place.
Even if the whole world turned its back against her, there was one person who would not let her die.
The sound of footsteps made her thoughts snap.
''She hasn't died yet?" A familiar voice sounded.
This voice was different from the person who had handed her the knife when she came here.
''What is she thinking? She would rather torment herself than take her life?!'' The woman spoke in part disbelief and part amusement, ''Never knew my elder sister had such perseverance.''
Ella's body turned cold. The wounds on her skin suddenly tingled and burnt like someone rubbed salt across them, ''Esther...?" her voice croaked.
''It's me, sister...'' The woman giggled as if she could see her shock despite the darkness, ''Ah, tell me, why are you not dead yet?"
Tears welled up in Ella's eyes. Betrayal stabbed her heart like poisonous thorns.
Inhaling a sharp breath, she muttered 4 words with all her strength, ''He will save me.''
These words sounded strange on her own tongue.
''You are counting on Mr. King? Haven't you always shunned and hated him? That husband of yours was indeed obsessed with you at one point but that is the nature of all men. What they can't get, they must have. They like the chase. However, after a while, the game of chase dulls out.''
Ella also found it laughable. The man she had been running away from, for all her life, was the one she longed for on the verge of death.
But it was probably the realization that the world could turn its back on her but Adrian never would.
He was crazy but she was his only craze. He had proved it to her for a decade now.
''Let me tell you this, sister. Your man is getting married to me in two days. So, you can die in peace here while I please him on our wedding night later.''
Silence descended on the place for a moment.
Then, the sound of a maniacal laughter occupied the dark space.
''You... what are you laughing at?!"
Ella gasped for breath. Because of her constant screaming under torture, she had damaged her vocal cords so when she spoke, her voice was grating to one's ears, ''How desperate are you for Adrian, Esther? In two days, it will be his grandfather's death anniversary. He will marry you on that day? In your dreams!"
''You... Even in this condition, you still want to humiliate me. Die, Ella!"
'Bang' 'Bang' 'Bang'
Following the sound of three consecutive gunshots, Ella dropped in the darkness.
A peaceful smile was etched on her face.
No more pain. Finally.
Still, her heart was filled with regrets.
Must I die like this?
If... If there is a next life, I must avenge myself and I must live well.
But, is there even a next life?
...
Ella gasped and her eyes flew open.
The familiar scent of cedar and wine filled her lungs. But her mind was too muddled to understand anything.
She felt the force of a body and the roughness of someone's breath against her skin.
As realization slammed into her, her heart turned to ice. No. No!
Didn't Esther kill her? Did she leave her alive to humiliate her further like this?
She must be dreaming. She has to be.
'Ah!' The invasive pain told her it was not a dream.
With every ounce of her strength, she prepared to throw him off her.
But the moment she moved, she spotted a familiar profile through her hazy gaze and suddenly, her body stilled.
Even though he had his face buried in her neck there was no way she couldn't recognize him.
The man on top of her was no stranger. He was her husband, the person she never thought she would see again.
Everything in her consciousness told her she was dead. Then, what.. And why was he on top of her?
Her vision was blurry. A strange mix of pain and pleasure dominated her body as the initial pain came to pass.
In a daze, she reached out towards him, ''It couldn't…be…'' Her broken mind must be playing tricks on her.
A rough hand clamped over her mouth, "Shh. Don't ever forget who you belong to.''
Those words dipped her in ice, turning her cold from head to toe even as her body burned from within.
The man who had buried his face in her neck lifted it and she looked into a pair of bloodthirsty eyes.
Ella was consumed in such sensations throughout her body that she could barely think straight.
"Why… why must you keep me?" she mumbled incoherently.
"Because I promised."
His voice was a cold cage, isolating her from the world.
A wild thought formed in her head and her head felt dizzy.
If she hadn't understood before, she did now.
Had she truly returned to the past?
With a groggy mind, Ella dragged herself to the door. When she opened it, she was greeted with an abrupt hug. Soon, her night suit had patches of wetness as Esther squeezed all the water content out of her eyes."Sis, how could this happen!"Ella was fully snapped awake with that shriek."I am not dead yet, Essie. What are you crying for?"Esther pulled back to look at Ella. But for a moment, she froze. It was past midnight and Ella had obviously woken up from sleep but her skin seemed to be glowing. Her face looked thinner, and unlike before where her features were covered in her face fat, they were prominent."She rushed here as soon as she heard that you are in trouble and this is how you treat her? Quite ungrateful," A voice sounded from behind.Ella tilted her head to the side and noticed Violet, Esther’s roommate standing near the door.Esther snapped out of her reverie, "Sister, if you don’t want me here, I can leave..."’’Since you are already here at this hour, it must be som
Unlike those books, Esther was not Ella’s half sister or step-sister. She was her biological sister. They grew up together and their memories were filled with nothing but good times of their childhood.Since young, Esther was the one who would give her the better toy and keep the broken one for herself. So, Ella had thought that the world could turn its back on her, Esther never would.Even after living and dying once, Ella could not figure out where it all went wrong. Then, how could her stupid self have known about it in her previous life?Seeing Ella standing in a daze, more tears rolled down Ruby’s cheeks. Strands of her long red hair clung to her damp face."You were going through so much yet all that while, I only cared about myself," Ruby shook her head, "I was not in your shoes. I did not know how it felt to be cornered by everyone. I turned away from you just because of a few bad words. Yet, you did not abandon me that day. You got kidnapped because of me..."Ruby trailed off
"Why’s she backing out now?""She’s not. I think she’s dead set on this..."Those whispers fell in Jenny’s ears.Seeing Ella’s provocative smile, Jenny exhaled sharply. "Fine."Ella smiled, "So that’s a yes to my bet, Professor?"Jenny nodded with a smile, "It’s improper to stall the other students here. As long as you comply with the procedures, I will agree to the bet. If you top in all the papers, I will resign from my post."Jenny scoffed inwardly. No way that girl could top anything, let alone every paper. If she really was that capable, she would not have failed her surprise test. But in front of the eyes of the students, Jenny’s actions and words were like that of an elder dealing with a fussy child and coaxing the child to be obedient. She was not even taking her seriously. Why would she corner her on purpose? One of the female staff members gestured. "Come with us."Ella followed without protest to the empty classroom nearby.A few minutes later, they came out and shook their
Years ago, Adrian had started a huge organization under Ella’s name privately.Very few people were aware of it but the organization covered a huge range of orphanages, animal shelters and even schools for the underprivileged. On Ella’s birthday everyday, Adrian would privately donate a huge amount to the organization. With the help of the investment money, the organization would be expanded throughout the year, supporting more causes. This has been a yearly ritual for since Ella came into Adrian’s life. And Ji Yan never understood it.Why would his second master go to this extent for a woman he married out of nowhere? Ji Yan had tried to make sense of it over the years. Love would have been a simple answer but the woman couldn’t even stand being in the same room as him back then.Then... why?But regardless of how he had asked, Ji Yan had never gotten an answer from the man himself.Right now, Ji Yan could not hold back his curiosity, "Second Master, is there a reason why we should d
After her usual run and breakfast with Adrian, Ella was ready for some leisurely morning time until he sat her down with that all-too-familiar ’you need to study’ look on his face.Ji Yan lingered by the door with two phones, one laptop and a pile of files in his hand.Yet, Adrian did not leave the room till he had wrapped up the formulas till the last Chapter.Apart from the scratch of her pen against the paper and some quality time spent with Riri and Ella, Ella’s day drifted quietly—until Adrian decided to up his game at night. And what he did was shockingly helpful for Ella. For every formula he had explained and made her note down, he wrote down two example questions, relatively ’easy’ as he called it.One of those example questions, he solved for her, step by step, while explaining. And then a dumbstruck Ella was asked to solve the row of the second example questions.Ella doubtfully took the notebook from his hand and when she tried, she realized that she managed to solve the f
The security tried to look for Riri’s owner but they could not find anyone back then. So, in the unpredictable weather of Vermilion City, both the little creatures had shared a broken roof together. Until the puppy disappeared one day.And Ella figured that Riri probably snuck inside the estate and got lost there, unable to go out.Ella glanced at Adrian in determination, "We must keep this kitty with us."Adrian sat there, visibly unmoved as he uttered one single word, "No.""_"Ji Yan felt like his soul just left his body.Given his second master’s aversion to little creatures, it was already a surprise that he was breathing the same air as them for so long. There was no way in the world that he would agree to keep another one.In the next moment, something so unexpected happened that Ji Yan’s worldview tilted a bit.Ella looked at Adrian with a little pout, "Baby, the moment I looked at this kitty, I had a feeling that she is going to be our second child. Don’t you think so as well
