A locked door only means something to the people who are outside it.

Rain drummed on the windshield as Rosalie drove north through gray morning mist. Inside the SUV nobody spoke. Beside her, Xavier held a tablet showing live satellite feeds of the coast, where a dense, red tinted bank of fog hugged the edge of the sea.

"The weather bureau calls it warm front condensation," he said. His voice was low in the quiet cab. He enlarged a thermal map. "They are telling the public it will burn off by noon."

"It will not." Rosalie kept both hands on the wheel. "It will sit in the low ground and soak into the soil. It will creep into the drains. By the time anyone figures out it is not water, the power grid will be rotting from the inside."

He turned to study her profile. Rain light slid along her jaw. "You talk like someone who has already counted the bodies."

"I have counted enough," she said softly. "I do not plan to be one."

He did not ask the next question. He had spent a day deciding not to.

Ten minutes later the road topped a rise, and the Halden mine lay below them.

It sat on the shore of a gray lake, a headframe tower and a cluster of old brick buildings, now wrapped in scaffolding. Cranes swung steel plate across the yard. Concrete mixers turned. At the base of the tower, a new blast door as tall as a house had been set into the shaft collar, still bright with fresh weld marks. Dozens of workers in yellow helmets moved under the eye of Arthur Lowell, who stood by the door with a clipboard of drawings.

Rosalie parked. Arthur hurried over, his face red from the cold.

"Mrs. Calloway. Forgive me, Miss West." He tugged his coat tighter. "The crews are working at double speed as you asked. The main blast doors are in. The copper manifolds from last night are being welded into the air scrubbing array now."

"Good. When is the seal complete?"

"Eighteen hundred tonight, if we hold this pace. But we have a problem with power. The municipal transformer on the upper road cannot give us enough voltage to run the filtration units at once."

The blue page opened quietly in the corner of Rosalie's sight.

[Halden Mine fortification: 62 percent.]

[Primary air system: built, awaiting power.]

[Ledger Points available: 5,000.]

"We do not use the city grid," she told Arthur. "Cut the site off from it. Wire the scrubbers straight to the battery bank in the lower vault. I will handle the main power coupling myself."

Arthur blinked, then nodded. "I will tell the chief engineer. And Miss West, one more thing. The closing on the Harbor Street clinic went through at nine this morning. It is yours."

"Thank you, Arthur. Keep the doctor on the payroll. Do not change anything yet."

He frowned at that, but he did not ask.

Before he could go, a horn blared on the upper road.

Three vehicles wound down the gravel toward the yard, spraying mud: a black town car between two security SUVs. They stopped twenty yards from the blast door. Eight armed guards spilled out, wearing the insignia of Calloway Enterprises' lender group. The town car's rear door opened last.

Nicholas climbed out looking like something dragged behind a truck. His suit was wrinkled. His eyes were bloodshot. His hair stuck up in the wind. Sera followed in a fur coat, glaring around at the mud.

Xavier moved up beside Rosalie, one hand resting near his sidearm. "Your ex husband brought friends."

"Stop all work on this site!" Nicholas's hoarse voice bounced off the lake. He marched forward with two guards at his shoulders.

Rosalie did not move. "You are trespassing again, Nicholas. The restraining order my lawyers filed was served on you three hours ago."

"It is worthless!" He jabbed a trembling finger at the blast door. "My board spent all night going through the transfers! You timed the audit to crash my stock! You committed fraud to take this land!"

"You signed the release in front of two attorneys and a notary," Rosalie said. "You gave my grandfather's foundation back what was always the foundation's. You called it a hole in the ground. You were happy to be rid of it."

Sera clutched his arm, her voice climbing to a whine. "How can you be so heartless? The bank took Nick's townhouse this morning. We have nowhere to sleep, and you are spending millions on this monstrosity!"

Rosalie looked at her, and Sera took a step back without meaning to. "You still have the silk blouse, Sera. You can sleep in that."

"You cold, spiteful witch!" Nicholas lunged forward, and his guards shifted with him. "That mine was on my company's books! My receivers filed an emergency freeze twenty minutes ago. This entire site is seized!"

The lead guard stepped up, hand on his holster. "Miss West, the receivership committee has ordered us to clear the site and hold all equipment until the court reviews it."

Xavier stepped between them.

He did not draw. He just moved into the gap, and his shoulders blotted out the light. The easy calm slid off him. What replaced it was the heavy stillness of a man who had decided what happened next.

"Step back," he said, low and flat.

The guard froze. His eyes met Xavier's gray ones, then dropped to the black tactical crest on his chest. His hand started to shake.

"Who the hell are you?" Nicholas demanded, his voice cracking. "This is a civil dispute. Get out of my way."

"Sector logistics command," Xavier said. "The Halden Foundation is a registered supplier to the emergency reserve, and my unit has the guard contract for this site. Two of my men are posted at the gate. Your receivership committee has no standing over a protected supply facility."

He stepped closer, until his shadow fell across Nicholas's face.

"Any attempt to delay or seize critical bio defense infrastructure is treason against regional security. If your guards take one more step onto this gravel, I will have my squad arrest every one of you under emergency code four. You will not like the cell."

The guards traded looks. The lead man slowly lifted his hand from his weapon.

"Sir," he muttered to Nicholas, pale now. "He is telling the truth about the code. That crest is special logistics command. We cannot touch him."

"What?" Nicholas whirled. "I paid you to clear this site!"

"We are leaving, Mr. Calloway." The guard waved his men back to the SUVs. "Take it up with the high court."

"Wait! You cannot leave us here!" Sera shrieked.

Nicholas stood frozen in the rain, watching his private army walk away. He looked past Xavier, at Rosalie by the blast door, and his face twisted with something near panic.

"You think you are safe in that hole?" His voice broke. "You threw away everything we had! You are going to die alone in the cold!"

Rosalie stepped up beside Xavier, to the very edge of the threshold, and looked down at him.

"I died once because I trusted you, Nicholas," she said, quiet enough that the rain nearly covered it. "I will not die twice. Look at the sky."

He looked up at the gray clouds.

"In eight days that rain will turn to poison. The air you are breathing will burn your throat to ash. And when you come back down this road and beg me to open these doors for one clean breath..."

She smiled, small and terrible.

"...I will not hear you."

Nicholas shuddered. Cold fear moved through him from nowhere he could name. All his confidence went out of him at once, as if it had been a coat. He could not speak. He could not move.

"Get off my land," Rosalie said. "Before Commander Knight enforces his code."

Nicholas stumbled backward, tripped on his own shoe, and Sera caught him. They got into the town car without another word. His hands shook so hard he missed the handle twice. The car spun its tires in the mud and clawed up the road until it crested the rise and was gone.

The yard went quiet but for the rain on the steel.

Xavier looked down at her, a faint real smile on his mouth. "You handle an ex husband better than most officers handle enemy fighters."

"He is not an ex husband anymore, Commander." She turned toward the blast door. "He is a man with a date."

She walked inside.

The entry chamber ran back into the mountain, concrete walls rough and new, work lights strung along the ceiling. Past it, a lift shaft dropped toward living quarters, grow beds, and the great air manifolds she had paid for twice.

At the central power console she laid her bare palm on the activation plate.

The blue page flared.

[Power coupling initiated.]

[Spend 3,000 Ledger Points to start a sealed power core?]

[Confirmed.]

[Ledger Points remaining: 2,000.]

[Debtor note: Nicholas Calloway. Sera Parker. Balance: partial.]

A deep hum rose through the floor. Far below, the generators caught and roared. The yellow work lights steadied and turned a clean, steady white.

Around them the air scrubbers began to turn, a low rhythmic purr moving through the ventilation shafts as the air in the vault tightened and cleared.

[Halden Mine fortification: 85 percent.]

[Air system: sealed, test pressure holding.]

[Time until Spore Fog outbreak: 8 days, 13 hours, 40 minutes.]

Xavier walked in behind her and breathed deeply. He tasted the air. It had no dust, no damp, no weight.

Behind them the great blast door slid shut for its first test and met the frame with a heavy pneumatic thud. A chime sounded. Then another. Then silence, and a green light on the console.

"It holds," he said, and looked at her with something close to awe. "You built an airtight fortress in two days."

She stood at the center of the control room with her coat open and the white light on her face.

"The fortress is ready, Commander," Rosalie said. "Now we prepare for the war."

The quickest way to learn who your enemies are is to see what they steal first. The site office sat just inside the mouth of the Halden mine, a steel box bolted to the salt wall with work lamps swinging overhead. Xavier followed Rosalie in, his boots loud on the metal floor. His eyes never stopped moving. He marked the exits, the support beams, the three forklifts parked by the loading bay.On a folding table lay blueprints weighed down with coffee mugs. Beside them, a crate lid stamped with a serial number caught his attention. He ran a gloved finger across it."This is military spec titanium framing," he said. "Built to survive shock from below. You did not order this for a storage unit.""I like my buildings to last, Commander," Rosalie said, not stopping."Last through what?" He leaned against the table and folded his arms. "Blast doors. Only a fool hears a quiet sky and calls it peace.Rosalie did not look away. The autumn wind pulled dark hair across her cheek, but she stood like a post driven into rock. Behind the mine gate, a crane groaned as it lowered steel plate off a flatbed. Between her and Xavier Knight, the noise seemed to drop out, and the space stretched tight as a bowstring."A lab report," Rosalie said. "And you came here with a piece of paper instead of a team of scientists. Either the report is weak, Commander, or you do not trust it enough to act on it."Xavier did not blink. His gray eyes had a stillness she remembered from her old life, the look of a man who had walked through bad places and learned to read faces in them."Ordinary people buy air scrubbers for mold," he said. He stepped off the road and stopped two feet from her, tall enough to block the afternoon sun. "They do not order forty thousand respirator filters, a pallet of blast doors, and enough water purifier to run a small town. That

The best way to ruin a man who lives on your money is to let him believe he is robbing you.Rosalie stood in front of the mahogany desk on the top floor of Calloway Enterprises, in an ivory suit that fit her like armor. Afternoon sun poured through the glass wall. It lit up the leather chairs and the framed photos of Nicholas shaking hands at business award dinners. Her grandfather's foundation had paid for every one of those dinners.Nicholas sat behind the desk with his shoulders locked. On the couch to his left, Sera Parker pressed a silk handkerchief to her nose. Her blouse was the one Rosalie had bought her on their last shopping trip. Her eyes were red on cue."You are making a huge mistake," Nicholas said, and slapped a folder onto the desk. "You block my calls, then walk in here and demand a property split? Everything I built was for our future.""You did not build anything, Nicholas," Rosalie said. Her voice was quiet and flat. "You managed my money. Badly."She nodded at the

When your own family drains your blood to buy their way into the safe zone, waking up again is not a second chance at love. It is a loaded gun.The needle in Rosalie's arm was cold, but she hardly felt it. The numbness had already climbed past her elbows. The clinic room smelled of bleach and wet rust. Beyond the reinforced door, the Spore Fog scraped along the concrete with a soft, sticky sound, like a tongue dragged across a wall. In less than a month it had eaten three quarters of the city."Keep the line steady, Nicholas," a woman whispered. "The gate scanner checks cell density. If the blood is agitated, it may flag her."Rosalie dragged her eyes open. The fluorescent light split into two, then three. Beside her gurney sat Sera Parker in a clean white coat, her cheeks pink, her hair brushed. Nobody out here had cheeks like that anymore. For four years Rosalie had kept these people alive. She had traded her mother's jewelry for canned beans. She had stood between them and starving
