Chapter 3

Author: Yumi
I settled into the dilapidated storage room on the south side.

Mom lived like a taut bowstring, exhausting herself every day just to offer a flicker of comfort at the slightest frown from Ryan.

She hadn't yet undergone a marking ceremony with Ryan; or rather, he hadn't decided if he wanted to make her his Luna. Her current status teetered precariously between mistress of the house and high-ranking attendant.

One day, I was eating quietly in the side gallery at noon. Ryan's seat remained empty while Mom sat further down the table. In the silence, an urgent mind-link echoed in both my mind and Mom's.

Mom immediately looked up. Her silver-gray eyes flashed with displeasure. "Alice, deal with it."

Ryan's towering figure appeared before us. He seemed to have just returned from patrolling the outer edges of the pack's territory. He frowned slightly.

I hurried out as Sunna's sharp, frantic voice exploded in my head. "Alice! Did you take Dad's ancestral wolf-head talisman?"

"What talisman?" I asked.

Sunna's voice was thick with agitation and accusation. "Stop pretending. The one carved from obsidian! Dad wore it all the time! He said that it's gone. You must have stolen it before you left! That thing stabilizes the wolf, and it's worth a fortune!"

A deep weariness washed over me. "I didn't take it."

In my previous life, Dad had done the same. He had started selling off his possessions just to survive.

Sunna argued forcefully and unreasonably. "Dad is in a terrible state right now. Without the talisman, he has even less control over himself! He's been cursing you, calling you a cursed jinx who took away his last bit of luck!"

"Sunna, I'll say it again. I didn't take it. Choosing to follow Dad was your own decision. You should have understood long ago what you would be facing."

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath of the cold air. I severed the link and blocked all contact from Sunna.

As I turned to head back, a familiar warmth suddenly gushed from my nostrils. I instinctively tilted my head back and covered it, but the warm liquid quickly flowed over my lips and dripped onto the cold stone railing, spreading into a crimson stain. It was happening again.

I fumbled through my pockets in a panic, only to find a scrap of rough cloth. Covering my nose and mouth, I lowered my head and hurried toward a secluded washroom in the corner of the main castle's first floor.

I turned on the faucet, splashing water onto my forehead and the back of my neck while firmly pressing my nostrils.

A deep voice sounded from behind me. "What happened?"

My body stiffened. Through the gaps in the flowing water, I caught Ryan's reflection in the mirror. He stood at the doorway, and I hadn't noticed when he arrived. His massive frame nearly blocked out the light.

I haphazardly wiped my face with my soaked sleeve. The water and blood mixed, making me look even more disheveled. "It's nothing, Alpha Ryan. Perhaps the air is too dry, or I'm just struggling to adjust to the environment."

I kept my head down, and my voice was muffled against my palm.

Ryan stepped inside silently and handed over a clean, dark cotton handkerchief. "Clean it up."

I took the handkerchief and pressed it to my nose.

"Does this happen often?" he asked.

His gaze didn't leave my face.

I kept up the lie and answered, "Occasionally."

The physical backlash from my naturally fractured wolf was intensifying. Nosebleeds, dizziness, and sharp pains in my marrow came more and more frequently. It felt as if my life were slipping through my fingertips at an accelerating pace.

Ryan didn't speak immediately. Those few seconds of silence stretched for what seemed like a century.

"The pack has healers."

His tone made his sentence seem like both a statement and a command.

"There's no need to trouble them. It's an old ailment; I'm used to it," I said.

I tried to turn sideways and slip past him, away from the suffocating confines of that tiny space.

He called my name. "Alice."

His voice wasn't loud, yet it acted like an invisible barrier, blocking my path. "In the Bloodclaw pack, you may choose silence, but you don't have to live like an antique waiting to be shattered."

I froze and looked up.

"If you're in pain, there's no need to pretend that you're fine."

After he finished speaking, he turned and left with steady strides, as though he had just handled a trivial matter in passing.

I stood alone in the cold washroom, clutching the cotton handkerchief that carried his scent. The metallic tang of blood in my nose was gradually replaced by the crisp, cool scent of the cloth.

Sunna began seeking me out frequently. "Alice, I realize how wrong I was."She cried as she poured out her complaints to me. "Dad has lost his mind. He's completely insane! He beats me and insults me, saying that I'm not as good as you."I listened in silence.Sunna grabbed my hand. "If I had chosen Mom back then and hadn't taken away your chance to be with Dad… could we start over and really be close?"I pulled my hand back and said, "Sunna, some choices can't be undone."She suddenly grew agitated. "But you have everything! You have Alpha Ryan's favor, the finest room, and everyone's respect! Meanwhile, I have nothing!"I looked at her. My eyes were heavy with weariness. "In my previous life, after I sacrificed my wolf, Dad became a Beta, and I died in agony before I could enjoy even two days of peace. Did you even think about how little I had back then?"Sunna was left speechless.I stood up. "Sunna, life isn't a game you can just take from others as you please. You have to

I hardly recognized Sunna. She was much thinner than I remembered. Her once glossy hair was now sallow and knotted. Her face was filled with exhaustion and fear.A mix of fresh and old bruises covered her face, and her left eye was so swollen it had narrowed to a mere slit. Her tattered clothes barely covered her body, revealing arms and shins littered with scabbed scratches and bite marks. The most jarring sight was the dark red bruising around her neck. It looked as though someone had once gripped it with brutal force. The moment she saw me, hatred flared in her eyes. "Alice!"She broke free from the guards' grip and rushed toward me. "So, you're really living comfortably here! Do you have any idea what Dad and I went through out there?"Ryan stepped forward, shielding me behind him. "Watch your tone."Only then did Sunna notice Ryan. She immediately took a step back, but the resentment in her eyes didn't fade. "Alpha Ryan, please forgive my rudeness, but I must ask my sister…

When I woke up, I found myself lying on a soft mat of fur. Sunlight streamed in through the high windows, casting a warm, gentle glow across my face. I froze for a moment."Don't move."Ryan's voice drifted over from beside me. He sat on a chair by the bed, holding a bowl of steaming medicinal soup."Alpha Ryan," I said.He brought the bowl to my lips. "Drink it. The healer prepared this. It will help stabilize what's left of your wolf."I drank it obediently. The soup was bitter, but once it hit my stomach, a wave of warmth spread through my entire body."How long was I asleep?" I asked.Ryan set the bowl down and studied my face. "Three days. Most of your wolf was torn apart, but… I used my own blood to keep you alive. You're safe now.""And the toxin—""It's gone."I let out a breath of relief, then a sudden realization hit me. "I can't shift anymore, can I?"Ryan was silent for a moment. "Your wolf was too fractured, and the sacrifice took most of it from you. The benefi

That night, Mom came into my bedroom, which was a rare occurrence. "I heard that you're going to the Sacred Spring with Alpha Ryan tomorrow?"She scrutinized me, sizing me up as if I were insignificant. "Alice, I'm warning you. Don't play any tricks. If you dare do anything that harms my status—"I cut her off. "Like using my own life to save Alpha Ryan?"Mom froze for a moment, then let out a mocking laugh. "With your abilities? Don't flatter yourself. What Ryan needs is a powerful mate, not a broken burden."She shut the door behind her. I curled up in the darkness until dawn. When the first ray of morning light pierced the window, I followed Ryan through the winding tunnels beneath the main castle. At the end of the secret passage, the space suddenly opened up, and a natural cavern appeared before my eyes. In the center of the cavern lay a pool of spring water shimmering with a faint blue glow. Its surface was shrouded in a thin layer of mist. That was the Sacred Spring.Ryan

I froze in place, and my breathing nearly stopped. The bone tablet beneath my pillow held the diagnosis I had received three days earlier after I secretly went to the pack healer. My wolf had been fractured since birth, and the backlash was growing more severe by the day. I wouldn't survive past the next full moon.I thought that I had hidden it well.My voice caught in my throat. "Alpha Ryan—"Ryan stood up slowly from the shadows. "Your mother doesn't know."It wasn't a question.I lowered my head. "She wouldn't care; she would only find it troublesome.""Did the healer say that there's no cure?" he asked.I replied, "He said that unless there is a complete ancestral wolf elixir, or—""Or what?" he asked.I gave a bitter smile. "Or if a powerful Alpha is willing to use their own blood essence to nourish it. But that's only a legend. Besides, who would waste their blood essence on the daughter of a Rogue?"Ryan walked silently to the window and stood there for a long moment

Ryan had a secret. It didn't take long for my suspicion to be confirmed. It started with an accident when Mom sent me to Ryan's meditation chamber to replace the incense.I carefully cleaned the burner and placed new aromatic blocks inside. As I tidied the stone bowl used for discarded ash next to the burner, a trace of an extremely faint scent drifted into my nostrils. It wasn't the fragrance of any soothing herbs I knew; it smelled more like Lunabloom extract. That scent was strikingly similar to a potion I had once taken in secret to ease the severe pain from my fractured wolf.It turned out that even this Alpha, who ruled a massive pack and possessed unfathomable power, was also enduring some form of persistent torment.I quickly returned the medicine bottle to the bottom of the stone bowl exactly as I had found it. I lightly covered it with ash, then left the chamber without a sound.During dinner that day, I left the table early due to my condition flaring up. Then, I overh
