Chapter 2

Author: Yumi
"Has she been brought back?"

Ryan's voice was low and revealed no emotion.

"Alpha Ryan, this is my eldest daughter, Alice Jones."

Mom gently nudged me half a step forward, and a perfectly measured smile appeared on her face. "Alice, greet Alpha Ryan."

I stepped forward, dropped to one knee, and lowered my head. "My respects to you, Alpha Ryan."

Ryan finally shifted his gaze from the documents to me. His stare felt like ice water seeping into my skin. It sent a chill through me. He studied me in silence for several moments as his eyes swept over my mud-caked boots and damp clothes, yet he didn't tell me to rise.

After a long pause, he spoke slowly, and his tone remained flat. "There's a vacant bedroom at the far end of the west wing on the second floor. Take her there. Until she learns the rules of the pack, there's no need for her to wander about."

"Thank you for taking me in, Alpha Ryan," I replied while maintaining my respectful posture.

Mom visibly relaxed, hurried over, and motioned for me to stand before guiding me toward the west wing. "Do you see? Alpha Ryan may be imposing, but he isn't unreasonable."

Mom lowered her voice, and her words spilled out quickly. "As long as you're quiet enough, stay out of trouble, and don't provoke him, you can survive here. Remember, your very existence is already an act of tolerance on his part."

I came to a halt before stepping onto the spiral stone staircase. "Mom."

A flash of mild fury immediately crossed Mom's face. "What is it now? Alice, you had better not start making demands already. It was only for my sake that you were allowed into the Bloodclaw pack in the first place—"

I interrupted her calmly. "I would like to change rooms."

Mom's breath hitched, and her eyes flashed with disbelief and anger. "Are you insane? How dare you question a room personally designated by Alpha Ryan? Do you have any idea how many wolves wish to enter this main castle but are turned away?"

I endured the increasingly sharp pain in my head. My voice was low and raspy from holding back the agony. "That room is at the far end of the west wing and hardly gets any sunlight all year. I'm very sensitive to the cold."

This was the truth. The naturally fractured wolf brought not only pain but also an extreme intolerance to cold. Right now, sunlight was the only comfort I could think of that might ease my suffering.

Mom's voice rose with agitation, echoing faintly through the stone stairwell.

"Cold? Are the fireplaces in the castle not hot enough? Are you intentionally trying to make Alpha Ryan think that I can't even discipline my own daughter? Wasn't your exiled father disgraceful enough? Must you bring shame to me as well?"

Her sharp accusations pierced my ears like needles. I had to clutch my throbbing temple as my vision blurred.

"I just need some sunlight," I repeated, my voice weak.

"Why the commotion?" Ryan asked.

At some point, he silently appeared in the shadows of the platform above the stairs.

His simple words made Mom freeze instantly. Her face went pale, and she bowed immediately. "My deepest apologies, Alpha Ryan. It's Alice… She's being difficult. I'm educating her."

Ryan's gaze shifted to me. His icy stare pinned me in place once more. "Are you dissatisfied with the room?" he asked. His voice gave nothing away.

I forced myself to endure the discomfort, raised my head, and met his eyes. "I wouldn't dare be dissatisfied, Alpha Ryan. It's just that I'm extremely sensitive to the cold and require a room with sunlight."

He remained silent. The atmosphere was suffocating. At last, he spoke again. His words were measured. "There's an empty room on the south side near the outer wall, but it has fallen into disrepair and lacks furniture. Do you want it?"

I nodded without hesitation.

Ryan's eyes lingered on my face for a brief moment before shifting away, as if he had lost interest. "As you wish."

After he finished speaking, he turned and vanished into the shadows of the platform as if he had never been there.

Mom straightened up and shot me a fierce glare. Her eyes were filled with anger and a trace of fear that was hard to detect. "You will regret this, Alice. Playing games in front of Alpha Ryan is never a wise move."

I didn't respond and simply walked in silence toward the more secluded southern corridor she had pointed out. Tomorrow, the sun would shine through there, and that was enough.

That night, the bone-deep ache in my head continued. I curled up on the floor and sank into a dream that was cold yet steady, free from Dad's uncontrolled roars.

Sunna began seeking me out frequently. "Alice, I realize how wrong I was."She cried as she poured out her complaints to me. "Dad has lost his mind. He's completely insane! He beats me and insults me, saying that I'm not as good as you."I listened in silence.Sunna grabbed my hand. "If I had chosen Mom back then and hadn't taken away your chance to be with Dad… could we start over and really be close?"I pulled my hand back and said, "Sunna, some choices can't be undone."She suddenly grew agitated. "But you have everything! You have Alpha Ryan's favor, the finest room, and everyone's respect! Meanwhile, I have nothing!"I looked at her. My eyes were heavy with weariness. "In my previous life, after I sacrificed my wolf, Dad became a Beta, and I died in agony before I could enjoy even two days of peace. Did you even think about how little I had back then?"Sunna was left speechless.I stood up. "Sunna, life isn't a game you can just take from others as you please. You have to

I hardly recognized Sunna. She was much thinner than I remembered. Her once glossy hair was now sallow and knotted. Her face was filled with exhaustion and fear.A mix of fresh and old bruises covered her face, and her left eye was so swollen it had narrowed to a mere slit. Her tattered clothes barely covered her body, revealing arms and shins littered with scabbed scratches and bite marks. The most jarring sight was the dark red bruising around her neck. It looked as though someone had once gripped it with brutal force. The moment she saw me, hatred flared in her eyes. "Alice!"She broke free from the guards' grip and rushed toward me. "So, you're really living comfortably here! Do you have any idea what Dad and I went through out there?"Ryan stepped forward, shielding me behind him. "Watch your tone."Only then did Sunna notice Ryan. She immediately took a step back, but the resentment in her eyes didn't fade. "Alpha Ryan, please forgive my rudeness, but I must ask my sister…

When I woke up, I found myself lying on a soft mat of fur. Sunlight streamed in through the high windows, casting a warm, gentle glow across my face. I froze for a moment."Don't move."Ryan's voice drifted over from beside me. He sat on a chair by the bed, holding a bowl of steaming medicinal soup."Alpha Ryan," I said.He brought the bowl to my lips. "Drink it. The healer prepared this. It will help stabilize what's left of your wolf."I drank it obediently. The soup was bitter, but once it hit my stomach, a wave of warmth spread through my entire body."How long was I asleep?" I asked.Ryan set the bowl down and studied my face. "Three days. Most of your wolf was torn apart, but… I used my own blood to keep you alive. You're safe now.""And the toxin—""It's gone."I let out a breath of relief, then a sudden realization hit me. "I can't shift anymore, can I?"Ryan was silent for a moment. "Your wolf was too fractured, and the sacrifice took most of it from you. The benefi

That night, Mom came into my bedroom, which was a rare occurrence. "I heard that you're going to the Sacred Spring with Alpha Ryan tomorrow?"She scrutinized me, sizing me up as if I were insignificant. "Alice, I'm warning you. Don't play any tricks. If you dare do anything that harms my status—"I cut her off. "Like using my own life to save Alpha Ryan?"Mom froze for a moment, then let out a mocking laugh. "With your abilities? Don't flatter yourself. What Ryan needs is a powerful mate, not a broken burden."She shut the door behind her. I curled up in the darkness until dawn. When the first ray of morning light pierced the window, I followed Ryan through the winding tunnels beneath the main castle. At the end of the secret passage, the space suddenly opened up, and a natural cavern appeared before my eyes. In the center of the cavern lay a pool of spring water shimmering with a faint blue glow. Its surface was shrouded in a thin layer of mist. That was the Sacred Spring.Ryan

I froze in place, and my breathing nearly stopped. The bone tablet beneath my pillow held the diagnosis I had received three days earlier after I secretly went to the pack healer. My wolf had been fractured since birth, and the backlash was growing more severe by the day. I wouldn't survive past the next full moon.I thought that I had hidden it well.My voice caught in my throat. "Alpha Ryan—"Ryan stood up slowly from the shadows. "Your mother doesn't know."It wasn't a question.I lowered my head. "She wouldn't care; she would only find it troublesome.""Did the healer say that there's no cure?" he asked.I replied, "He said that unless there is a complete ancestral wolf elixir, or—""Or what?" he asked.I gave a bitter smile. "Or if a powerful Alpha is willing to use their own blood essence to nourish it. But that's only a legend. Besides, who would waste their blood essence on the daughter of a Rogue?"Ryan walked silently to the window and stood there for a long moment

Ryan had a secret. It didn't take long for my suspicion to be confirmed. It started with an accident when Mom sent me to Ryan's meditation chamber to replace the incense.I carefully cleaned the burner and placed new aromatic blocks inside. As I tidied the stone bowl used for discarded ash next to the burner, a trace of an extremely faint scent drifted into my nostrils. It wasn't the fragrance of any soothing herbs I knew; it smelled more like Lunabloom extract. That scent was strikingly similar to a potion I had once taken in secret to ease the severe pain from my fractured wolf.It turned out that even this Alpha, who ruled a massive pack and possessed unfathomable power, was also enduring some form of persistent torment.I quickly returned the medicine bottle to the bottom of the stone bowl exactly as I had found it. I lightly covered it with ash, then left the chamber without a sound.During dinner that day, I left the table early due to my condition flaring up. Then, I overh
