Chapter 2

Author: Wet Tissue
A sharp, blinding pain shot through my head, like a rope being pulled tight around my skull. I shouted, "What are you doing? Put her down right now!"

The extreme tearing I had suffered during the difficult childbirth, which had required dozens of stitches, sent shooting pain through my lower body. I knew the wound had definitely reopened. However, there was no time to dwell on it.

Ignoring the blinding pain, I staggered forward and lunged at Yasmin Holden. Victoria's cries filled the room, piercing and frantic, just as Yasmin let out a shrill scream.

Suddenly, the door to my hospital room burst open. Tristan stormed in and crossed the distance in a few quick strides before kicking me aside.

He pulled Yasmin into his arms and asked, "Yas, are you okay? Are you hurt? Bridget, I knew it! You agreed to the divorce too easily because you were obviously planning something! So, this is what you've been waiting to do!"

I clutched Victoria tightly as Tristan's kick sent us flying several feet. My back slammed hard against the wall, forcing a painful groan from my throat.

Meanwhile, the woman in Tristan's protective embrace trembled against his chest, crying while holding her stomach. Yet, her face showed a smug smile directed at me.

Yasmin explained between sobs, "Professor Barnes, I got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and happened to pass by Mrs. Barnes' room when I heard the baby crying. I thought I shouldn't disturb Mrs. Barnes' rest, so I took it upon myself to come in and help soothe the baby...

"But Mrs. Barnes suddenly accused me of ruining her marriage with you and threatened to push me and my baby out the window!"

Tristan believed every word Yasmin said and stared at me in utter disbelief. Before I could explain, he scooped Yasmin up in his arms. "I should have known all along—you're completely vicious and cold-hearted! Someone like you doesn't deserve to use my money for postpartum care. You belong on the streets!"

With those words, he carried Yasmin out of my hospital room. Victoria continued crying in my arms, but Tristan never once asked about her.

Before I could react, a group of security guards burst into the room, restrained me, and threw me out of the hospital. The frigid night air made my wound sting unbearably while Victoria's screams had faded to hoarse, pitiful whimpers. My blood was pooling beneath us, dripping onto the ground beneath me.

I had planned to go to the emergency room to have my wound stitched up before figuring out what to do next. However, this private hospital was half-owned by Tristan, and the security guards had already posted my photo at the entrance with large letters stating: "This person is banned from receiving treatment at this facility!"

It was still the middle of the night with very few cars passing by, and the rare cabs that did come avoided me when they saw the blood soaking through my clothes.

With no other choice, I wrapped myself tightly in my hospital gown and carried Victoria five miles through the dark streets to the nearest public hospital, where they stitched me up again.

The morning after the surgery, I sent a resignation email to the college. Then, I dialed a number I knew by heart. "Rowan, about that project you mentioned... I'm in."

Meanwhile, by that time, I had already achieved remarkable success in Asheolia. Over the years, I continued to publish research under my name and quickly established a reputation in the academic world. I had won virtually every award and was invited to give lectures throughout Asheolia. Soon, Victoria reached the age to start preschool. On an otherwise ordinary afternoon, Carter and I went to pick up Victoria from school, only to spot Tristan at the preschool entrance. After several years without seeing him, I could barely recognize him anymore.Carter immediately positioned himself in front of Victoria and me, raising his hand to warn Tristan not to come any closer. Tristan obediently remained at a distance, simply watching us from afar. After a while, he handed Carter a document. "I'm not here to harass you but to see you one last time. I promised you long ago that I would let you live in a big house. "I've transferred this house to your name. If you don't want to go back, you

The video showed a dimly lit hospital room corner where a woman in a hospital gown tiptoed in through the door from outside. Many viewers immediately recognized her as the victimized female blogger who had recently gone viral.Yasmin lifted Victoria from the crib and walked toward the windowsill. The woman lying in the hospital bed quickly awakened and rushed over to Yasmin, begging her to return the baby. However, Yasmin burst into laughter almost immediately. "Do you think that because you've given birth before me, you'll get special treatment from Professor Barnes? Not a chance! He promised me that as soon as I have my baby, he'll cut all ties with you and marry me!"The aggressive woman in the video seemed like a completely different person from the one who had been playing the victim and collecting funds online. Shortly afterward, multiple intimate photos of Tristan and Yasmin, explicit in nature, surfaced on the internet. Tristan's defense attorney immediately seized this ev

A year after I arrived in Asheolia, Rowan also made the journey there. He brought me news about Tristan from back home.During that year, I had completely shut myself off from outside events, focusing entirely on my research. I hadn't bothered to follow up on what happened after I sent all the evidence to Rowan.Only after Rowan told me did I learn that following my departure, Tristan's case had triggered a wave of intense investigations back home. More and more women had stepped forward to share their personal experiences.Apparently, experiencing indecent harassment was a shared secret among women. Yasmin seized the opportunity to pose as a victim herself, blending in with the others. She created a personal account and described her alleged assault by Tristan across various social media platforms. She claimed, "He was my professor and used my academic standing to force himself on me!"If I didn't let him have his way with me, he threatened to expel me. I had no choice but to giv

Meanwhile, I had just landed in Asheolia. Victoria had been quiet and well-behaved throughout the dozens of hours of flying, which saved me a lot of stress. After getting off the plane, I took out the local Asheolian SIM card from the envelope Rowan had given me and installed it in my phone. At the arrival gate, I spotted Melanie Tanner and her son, Carter Baldwin, waiting to pick me up. Carter was eight years my senior. After my parents passed away, he had been my confidant for a very long time. Melanie gently stroked my cheek, noticing the wound on my temple. She said softly, "You've been through so much, my child. If your parents could see this, they'd be beside themselves with worry..."I grew up in the faculty housing complex of the Academy, where the Baldwins were our neighbors. When I was five years old, my parents died while conducting scientific research. After that, I thought I was completely alone in the world.Later, everyone in the housing complex became like parent

Tristan sped the way home, his car racing through traffic. Eric's words kept replaying in his mind over and over again. Bridget was going abroad to join an international research team.He had never heard Bridget mention anything about this.He repeatedly called Bridget's cell phone, but no one answered. Finally, he arrived at the home he shared with Bridget. He kept entering the door code he remembered so well, but the system continuously flashed "incorrect password".After several attempts, he suddenly remembered that the door code had long since been changed to his and Yasmin's birthdays. He awkwardly punched in that uncomfortable new combination and pushed open the door to find the house exactly as it had been the day he left. The living room still showed signs of a struggle, with shattered mirror fragments scattered across the floor, stained with ominous droplets of blood. "Bridget! Bridget!" Tristan called her name repeatedly, his voice echoing through the large house, but

It was only afternoon when Tristan left the hospital, and just as he was about to drive home, he received a call from the college. The news had finally come through about his promotion to full professor.Over the past five years, Bridget had built an extensive professional network for him. Before her pregnancy, Bridget had taken him to various social functions and networking events whenever she had free time.Drinking until she got hospitalized had been a common occurrence, but all those social efforts and connections were meant for this very moment—his promotion to full professor after five years. Now, Tristan had finally achieved that.Tristan rushed to the college without delay to receive congratulations from his colleagues. He listened to everyone's well wishes half-heartedly because, at that moment, all he wanted was to see Bridget immediately and share this good news with her."Would Bridget feel better about her condition once she heard this wonderful news?" Tristan wondered
