Chapter 4

Author: Wet Tissue
Initially, our home hadn't featured a keypad lock. Five years ago, Tristan and I lived in a rundown apartment that cost just 300 dollars a month to save money for research.

One night, after working late at the research lab, I returned home to find someone had forcibly broken into our apartment. Fortunately, Tristan had arrived in time to call the police, preventing a potential disaster.

After that incident, he had absolutely refused to let me work late at the lab anymore.

In our tiny one-bedroom apartment covered with mold stains, he had held me close and promised that someday he would provide me with a big house protected by the safest keypad lock. Yet now, as our circumstances had improved, the anti-theft lock we had chosen together was being used to keep me out.

Just as I was about to leave, the door opened from the inside. A woman stood in the doorway with lingerie barely hanging on her shoulders, a sheer wrap doing little to hide the red marks on her skin.

She mumbled, "Can't a person get any sleep around here? It's still so early!"

Then, she added, "Oh, it's just you, Mrs. Barnes. Is there something you need? Professor Barnes exhausted himself last night and is still lying in bed. If it's urgent, you can tell me, and I'll pass the message along."

Yasmin spoke while proudly displaying her pregnant belly. She even pulled her shawl down a few inches to reveal intimate marks on her skin, completely embodying the role of the lady of the house.

In the past, this would have driven me insane with anger. However, I simply ignored her provocations and walked straight into the house.

"I'm just here to get my things, then I'll leave," I replied, pushing Victoria's stroller past her into the house.

When I reached what had been my bedroom, I discovered that not a single item of mine remained in sight. The bedside tables and walls were now covered with photos of Tristan and Yasmin.

The pictures documented them watching the Northern Lights in Glaceheim, chasing dolphins in the ocean, and kissing on a mountaintop before sunrise. Tristan had done all the romantic things couples do with her—things he had never done with me.

Instead of feeling hurt, I felt pathetic. During our five years together, I had made the same birthday wish five times. "I hope Tristan can spend more time with me this year."

Tristan had always smiled and promised that he would definitely make time to be with me more the following year. Yet, he broke that promise year after year, and I finally understood the truth.

It wasn't that he didn't have time—he was just busy spending it with his female student.

Meanwhile, by that time, I had already achieved remarkable success in Asheolia. Over the years, I continued to publish research under my name and quickly established a reputation in the academic world. I had won virtually every award and was invited to give lectures throughout Asheolia. Soon, Victoria reached the age to start preschool. On an otherwise ordinary afternoon, Carter and I went to pick up Victoria from school, only to spot Tristan at the preschool entrance. After several years without seeing him, I could barely recognize him anymore.Carter immediately positioned himself in front of Victoria and me, raising his hand to warn Tristan not to come any closer. Tristan obediently remained at a distance, simply watching us from afar. After a while, he handed Carter a document. "I'm not here to harass you but to see you one last time. I promised you long ago that I would let you live in a big house. "I've transferred this house to your name. If you don't want to go back, you

The video showed a dimly lit hospital room corner where a woman in a hospital gown tiptoed in through the door from outside. Many viewers immediately recognized her as the victimized female blogger who had recently gone viral.Yasmin lifted Victoria from the crib and walked toward the windowsill. The woman lying in the hospital bed quickly awakened and rushed over to Yasmin, begging her to return the baby. However, Yasmin burst into laughter almost immediately. "Do you think that because you've given birth before me, you'll get special treatment from Professor Barnes? Not a chance! He promised me that as soon as I have my baby, he'll cut all ties with you and marry me!"The aggressive woman in the video seemed like a completely different person from the one who had been playing the victim and collecting funds online. Shortly afterward, multiple intimate photos of Tristan and Yasmin, explicit in nature, surfaced on the internet. Tristan's defense attorney immediately seized this ev

A year after I arrived in Asheolia, Rowan also made the journey there. He brought me news about Tristan from back home.During that year, I had completely shut myself off from outside events, focusing entirely on my research. I hadn't bothered to follow up on what happened after I sent all the evidence to Rowan.Only after Rowan told me did I learn that following my departure, Tristan's case had triggered a wave of intense investigations back home. More and more women had stepped forward to share their personal experiences.Apparently, experiencing indecent harassment was a shared secret among women. Yasmin seized the opportunity to pose as a victim herself, blending in with the others. She created a personal account and described her alleged assault by Tristan across various social media platforms. She claimed, "He was my professor and used my academic standing to force himself on me!"If I didn't let him have his way with me, he threatened to expel me. I had no choice but to giv

Meanwhile, I had just landed in Asheolia. Victoria had been quiet and well-behaved throughout the dozens of hours of flying, which saved me a lot of stress. After getting off the plane, I took out the local Asheolian SIM card from the envelope Rowan had given me and installed it in my phone. At the arrival gate, I spotted Melanie Tanner and her son, Carter Baldwin, waiting to pick me up. Carter was eight years my senior. After my parents passed away, he had been my confidant for a very long time. Melanie gently stroked my cheek, noticing the wound on my temple. She said softly, "You've been through so much, my child. If your parents could see this, they'd be beside themselves with worry..."I grew up in the faculty housing complex of the Academy, where the Baldwins were our neighbors. When I was five years old, my parents died while conducting scientific research. After that, I thought I was completely alone in the world.Later, everyone in the housing complex became like parent

Tristan sped the way home, his car racing through traffic. Eric's words kept replaying in his mind over and over again. Bridget was going abroad to join an international research team.He had never heard Bridget mention anything about this.He repeatedly called Bridget's cell phone, but no one answered. Finally, he arrived at the home he shared with Bridget. He kept entering the door code he remembered so well, but the system continuously flashed "incorrect password".After several attempts, he suddenly remembered that the door code had long since been changed to his and Yasmin's birthdays. He awkwardly punched in that uncomfortable new combination and pushed open the door to find the house exactly as it had been the day he left. The living room still showed signs of a struggle, with shattered mirror fragments scattered across the floor, stained with ominous droplets of blood. "Bridget! Bridget!" Tristan called her name repeatedly, his voice echoing through the large house, but

It was only afternoon when Tristan left the hospital, and just as he was about to drive home, he received a call from the college. The news had finally come through about his promotion to full professor.Over the past five years, Bridget had built an extensive professional network for him. Before her pregnancy, Bridget had taken him to various social functions and networking events whenever she had free time.Drinking until she got hospitalized had been a common occurrence, but all those social efforts and connections were meant for this very moment—his promotion to full professor after five years. Now, Tristan had finally achieved that.Tristan rushed to the college without delay to receive congratulations from his colleagues. He listened to everyone's well wishes half-heartedly because, at that moment, all he wanted was to see Bridget immediately and share this good news with her."Would Bridget feel better about her condition once she heard this wonderful news?" Tristan wondered

Long after Justin left, Tristan remained fixated on his screen, completely ignoring Yasmin. Unable to tolerate being ignored, Yasmin climbed onto Tristan's lap, straddled his thighs, and tossed his phone aside."How can your phone be more interesting than me?" she asked, suggestively shifting her position on his lap. However, Tristan wasn't in the mood for her advances and simply moved Yasmin to the hospital bed, carefully tucking the blanket around her. "You should rest now. I need to take care of something."Yasmin immediately protested. "You're going to see that bitch again, aren't you? Tristan! I forbid you to go!"Looking at the pregnant woman with her swollen face contorted in anger, Tristan lost his patience for the first time. "Who are you to call Bridget a bitch? Who do you think you are?" He threatened, "You're carrying my child, so you'd better take proper care of yourself! If you dare do anything stupid, I have many ways to make your life miserable! Don't forget that

It was no longer just an ordinary medical report; Justin was telling Tristan that Bridget might not make it. That day, he had left Yasmin behind and driven through the night to reach the hospital, desperate to see Bridget. But before he could even see Bridget, he received a long, emotional message from Yasmin. She had gone alone into the mountains while heavily pregnant, clearly risking both her life and her unborn child's.After weighing his options, Tristan had decided to search for Yasmin in the mountains. To give Yasmin peace of mind, he had brought divorce papers to Bridget when he visited her. He had originally planned to just go through the motions, knowing Bridget's strong personality meant she would never agree to sign. After all, he had never truly considered divorcing Bridget. However, he never expected that she would agree to the divorce. Tristan suddenly remembered how Bridget had looked that day in the hospital bed when she signed those divorce papers. Thinking a

Justin was confused because Tristan had never asked to see Bridget's medical reports during the entire period she had been pregnant. Nonetheless, he knew it wasn't his place to question too much. Hence, without giving it further thought, he went to his computer to retrieve and print Bridget's medical records. Tristan flipped through the thick stack of reports, his frown deepening with each page. Beyond the numerous test results that fell below normal ranges, even her psychological evaluation scores were alarmingly low. Several assessments even indicated that the patient had shown self-harming tendencies. The information about Bridget's self-harming seemed impossible to Tristan. He had known Bridget for over a decade, not just a year or two. In his memory, she had always been so intelligent and strong-willed. So, how could someone like her possibly resort to self-harm?Tristan growled, "Why is Bridget's mental state so poor? How could her nutrition be this deficient? Aren't you a
