Chapter 3

Author: Shaye
Back in the present moment, I forced myself to stay calm and played dumb. Senna's nails dug into my jaw, wrenching my face toward hers.

"Don't play stupid."

She let out a cold laugh and flung a stack of documents from her briefcase. "Sign."

I looked down. It was a written confession stating that I had framed Corbin for embezzlement. She wanted me to take the fall for him.

"Sign it and I'll pretend none of this ever happened." Her voice softened. She traced a slow line down my cheek with her thumb.

"We can still get married and go back to the way things were. I'll love you and spoil you, just like before."

My stomach turned. This woman truly thought she could manipulate me like a child.

In my previous life, she had used that same gentle voice to coax me into drinking milk she had laced with drugs. It was after that that she sliced me open with her own hands.

"Senna, I've already told my dad to dissolve our engagement," I said, my voice cold. "I'm the eldest son of the Thornwell family. Marrying me was your privilege, not mine. What makes you think you can use it as leverage?"

Her expression twisted. The next second, a searing pain ripped through my scalp. She grabbed a fistful of my hair and drove my head down against the coffee table.

"You worthless piece of trash!"

Something warm ran down my forehead. I crumpled to the floor, and her heel came down on my hand. The pain was blinding, but I bit down on my lip and refused to make a sound.

She crouched over me and pressed her thumb into the base of my throat. Her voice was so cold that it could have come from the grave. "Are you signing or not?"

"In... your dreams," I choked the words out.

Her eyes flashed. She snatched the fruit knife from the coffee table and drove it straight through my palm.

I screamed. Blood sprayed across her white dress like scattered petals.

My entire body seized with pain, but she leaned her weight onto my wrist and held it there. "This is just the beginning."

She raised the knife again. This time, the blade pointed at my stomach. "I don't think you want to experience being gutted alive a second time."

In that instant, her face and the face from my previous life became one. I looked into those merciless eyes, and my heart lurched with panic. She had been reborn too.

The memory of that unbearable agony flooded back, and my whole body began to shake.

"I'll sign," I said, my voice trembling.

I held out my uninjured left hand.

Senna smiled with satisfaction and pressed a pen between my fingers. Blood dripped onto the paper and spread in dark blooms as I scrawled my name in shaking, crooked letters. On the final stroke, I deliberately tore through the page.

"You think this is going to save Corbin?"

I managed a weak, bitter laugh. "Even if you can force my signature, can you keep my mouth shut? I'll see you in court, Senna. And when I get there, I'm going to lay out every single thing you've done for the whole world to hear."

In this life, Dad was still alive. As long as he was here, I had nothing to fear.

Her face contorted with rage, and her nails dug into my throat again. "You worthless piece of trash!"

Yet almost as quickly, she let out a cold laugh and released me.

I clutched my neck and gasped for air. When I looked up, that vicious smile was still on her face.

"This is the path you chose. I have plenty of ways to shut you up." She spat the words out and walked away without looking back.

A wave of dread washed through me. Something terrible was coming. I could feel it.

It did not take long.

"Mr. Gage! You need to get here now! The warehouse is on fire!"

"Maggie is a good woman. You marrying her puts my mind at ease."The butler's voice came from outside the door. "Sir, it's time."Dad took a deep breath, straightened his back, and held out his hand. "Let's go. She'll be walking in any minute now."Inside the church, the familiar melody began to play. I stood at the altar with Dad beside me.The doors opened slowly, and every pair of eyes in the room turned. Maggie appeared at the far end of the aisle in her wedding gown, tall and striking. Sunlight caught her as she walked, and for a moment, I forgot to breathe. She held my gaze the entire way, and nothing else in the room existed."Maggie, I'm entrusting my son to you," Dad said. Maggie reached the altar and took my hand, while Dad stepped back to his seat.Maggie held my hand firmly, her eyes unwavering. "You have my word, Mr. Randall. I'll take good care of him."Dad nodded and turned away, quietly wiping the corner of his eye as he went. The officiant began to read the vo

Maggie pocketed her phone. Her voice was cold as ice. "She tried to break into Thornwell Estate last night. The police shot her dead."Corbin crumbled as though the ground had been pulled out from under him, collapsing in a heap on the floor. "No... Senna... Senna..."He muttered her name over and over, tears streaking through his ruined makeup until his face was an unrecognizable mess.Maggie looked at the state of him and let out a scornful laugh. "Do you know what she said during the interrogation to try to clear her name?"Corbin's head snapped up. A flicker of desperate hope crossed his eyes. "She... What did she say?"Maggie looked down at him, her lips curling with contempt. "She said it was all your idea. The embezzlement, the arson… even the plot to kill Gage and Mr. Randall. All of it, planned and pushed by you."Her voice was cold, and every word was a blade that drove straight into him. "She said she just lost her head, that you manipulated her."The color drained fr

Maggie had planned to come with me, but a last-minute meeting came up. I told her to go ahead and handle it, figuring I would finish my coffee and meet her at the office afterward. The café was quiet. I sat by the window, sunlight spilling warm across the table through the glass.A server came over with my order and set it down with a smile. "Your latte. Enjoy."I looked up to thank him, and the blood in my veins turned to ice. It was Corbin Pryce. He was wearing a wig, and he had makeup on to further disguise himself, but those eyes were unmistakable. He flashed me a disarming smile, something venomous glinting underneath. "Mr. Thornwell, it's been a while."My fingers clenched under the table. I forced myself to stay steady. "What do you want?"He tilted his head, his smile innocent and guileless as though he were still the helpless victim he had always pretended to be. "Relax. I just want to chat."He sat down across from me and propped his chin on one hand, studying me. "You

Maggie's voice carried a hint of a smile. "I won't give you the chance."I stood outside the door, my heartbeat picking up for no reason I could name.By the time I came back from the coffee run, Maggie was standing by the window, her silhouette tall and still. She turned the moment I walked in, her eyes going straight to my hands."Where's the coffee?" She raised an eyebrow.I shrugged. "Forgot my wallet."She laughed quietly and did not call me out. After we left the room, the hallway was empty except for the two of us. Maggie walked beside me, her pace a little slower than usual, as though she wanted to say something but could not find the words. Finally, at the elevator, she stopped. Her voice was low. "Your father… Do you think he's satisfied with me?"Her tone was as composed as ever, but her fingers were fidgeting absently with her sleeves, and there was a trace of tension hidden in her eyes that most people would never have caught.I let the silence stretch on purpose,

Senna's face was pale. She stared at me, her lips trembling as though she still had something to say, but in the end, not a single word came out.The officers stepped forward and put her in handcuffs. In the final moment before they led her away, she spoke. Her voice was hoarse and dark."Gage, you think this is over?"I looked at her and smiled. "No. This is just the beginning. And while you're in there, I'll make sure someone takes very good care of you."Her eyes widened, and her face went white. The officers led her out. Her retreating figure was stiff and wretched, stripped of every trace of the pride and arrogance she had once carried.I stood where I was until the sound of the police sirens faded into nothing. Then, I let out a long, slow breath.Maggie walked over and took my hand. "It's over."I nodded, lacing my fingers through hers. I felt something ease inside me for the first time. "Maggie, thank you."…The next day, Maggie came with me to visit Dad.Sunlight

"Did you really think Mr. Randall died in that fire?"Senna's laughter cut off mid-breath as the color drained from her face. "What do you mean?"Maggie released her and wiped her fingers with a handkerchief, taking her time. "Why do you think Gage ended up in the hospital? He wasn't the only one pulled out."Senna went limp, collapsing to the floor as though all the strength had left her body at once. "That's impossible... I saw him...""Saw what?"I pushed the door open and walked into the office. Gauze was still wrapped around my forehead, but my eyes were clear. "Saw my father and I trapped in the fire?"Senna's head snapped up, her eyes filled with disbelief. "You... How..."I let out a cold laugh and came to a stop beside Maggie. "Senna, did you think getting a second life meant you could do whatever you wanted? Too bad. This time around, I came back too."Her pupils shrank. The color in her face faded completely. "You... You were reborn too?"I did not answer. I just lo
