Claire's POV

I was reading a book, or rather I was trying to, when my mother walked in.

"I got you a cup of your favorite hot chocolate, bunny." She beamed while sitting on the edge of the bed.

"Thanks, mom. Just what I needed right now to go with my book." I forced a smile, praying that it didn't look fake.

It's been two days since I took a voluntary discharge from the hospital and came home. I wasn't supposed to be here, considering that my parents were already worried about me since Zara arrived in my life like a calamity, ruining my marriage.

The last thing I wanted them to do was freak out, after learning that I starved myself for ten days like a stupid person.

However, there's nowhere else I could turn to. No door that would open for me, talk less of arms that would embrace me in and pat my back while I cried to composure.

"I was wondering if you would like to go to an art exhibition with me." Mom said. "You remember my friend, Tilly, her daughter's been given an opportun

24(Flashback cont'd)"You are pregnant, Claire." My mouth hung open in bewilderment. I am pregnant. I am.... Pregnant!!! I touched my stomach. I could feel nothing there. But with the disclosure of the news, my body became highly conscious. "How could I still have him? I fell down the stairs and...." My words faded out as I was too startled to reason out how it was even possible. "The doctors are shocked too. But the baby is a persistent little devil. Definitely his father's offspring. He's holding onto you somehow." Penelope shrugged her shoulders. I didn't like her calling my baby a devil though. We both remained silent for a while. Sobs harrowed through my body as all the events that transpired in the last few days plummeted into my consciousness. I was pregnant. I had to find out about the baby moments after I decided to divorce his father. Would it have made a difference had I found out about him earlier? Maybe five minutes earlier. I clutched the cloth over my stomach a

25I looked back at her and then my hand. "That's okay. Just... Just wrap it up quickly." "But sir, stitches have—" "I'll do it myself then.""I'll... I'll do it." She held my hand tight as I tried to take it back. Stacy quietly cleaned my wound and covered it with a thick layer of ointment. She then wrapped it carefully. Not even two minutes passed since the bandage was changed and it was dark red again. Stacy stared at it helplessly. On her way out, she requested me to see a doctor again. I ignored her and focused back on the papers. I cleaned the blood on the desk with tissues and discarded them. When I held the files again, and took a pen to scribble my signature, my eyes stilled on the freshly wrapped gauze on my hand. How did I get it? It's quite surprising because it was done to punish my impulsiveness for raising my hand on my own wife. Yes, I punished myself. I literally shattered a glass in my hand until the broken pieces penetrated my flesh half inch deep. Ever sinc

26Hunter shook his head with a sigh."I'm just tired. With Ares on leave, I'm finding work difficult."He lied even though his daughter Stacy has substituted him remarkably. The truth was that he didn't want Zara to know he was missing his wife. Ah! Now ex-wife."If that's what you want me to believe..." Zara smiled softly, innocently that made Hunter chest constrict. "Then it's okay. I believe it."He kept staring at her for a while. She was so serene and innocent. He wondered how could god be merciless to make Zara fall in the hands of people like her in-laws and husband? Clearly, she didn't deserve whatever she went through. That being the case he wished to give her what her husband couldn't.... A happy life with a happy husband. However, now as he looked at her and thought about being a good husband to her, his thoughts went back to Claire. A happy life with a happy husband was what she also desired. Her eyes twinkled with light that reached his heart, causing it to skip a beat.

27(Five days later) Claire was glowing. Her cheeks were tinted red and a delightful smile danced on her lips. She was sitting in her room with her mother and Penelope, looking at the small sonography image in her hand."He's so tiny, mom? Like a small pea." She beamed while showing the picture to her mom.Andrea nodded and took the image from her, "He's lovely!"After a while Andrea left to bring something to eat for Claire who kept staring at the image. She had been doubtful about the health of the baby because she found it difficult to not feel depressed in these days. Hunter's thoughts were always accompanied with tears and a seething ache in her chest.Claire couldn't help but visit the doctor to check on the baby's condition. Moreover, she wanted to know how it was growing in her womb.So today, she consulted her mother's gynaecologist who conducted her sonography. She was elated to see the baby on screen. He was about one month and two weeks old. He was growing well.Though th

28"Hello," His voice made her heartbeat go mad.Claire pressed a hand to her chest. She drew the phone away from her ear and turned her face to take deep breaths. Her breaths were uneven just from hearing his voice."You don't have to do it, Claire. That man is a mother fucker. Don't take his call."She could hear Scott's words ringing in her ears. Those words he said before she defied him and everyone else to come down to the garden to talk to him."So you remember me." Claire said, intending for her words to come out mocking but she hated herself for how weak it sounded.Hunter didn't reply. She heard his breathing on the phone. His breathing. One of the best sounds in the world."How come you remember my number, Hunter? I thought you deleted it long back when I signed the divorce papers." She spoke again as he remained silent. So typical of him. She never liked his silent side. It irked her."Do I have something that is of importance to you?" She gulped a knot down her throat befo

29Hunter let go of the coat and faced Claire, making Zara's teeth grit together. He was in a state of shock, his eyebrows flew high as he stared at her. Hunter walked towards her. He wanted to open his mouth and speak but the bewilderment he felt at what he was seeing left him speechless.A hand of his lifted and cupped her cheek. He felt bones under his touch. Her skin was highly cold and to irk him, she was wearing a thin cropped shirt that exposed her belly. His teeth clenched and a muscle at his jaw quivered. "What the hell have you done to yourself?" He glared at her.It has only been seven days . Just seven days and she lost weight and looked like a woman under depression. "Yeah, right, I did this to myself." Claire smiled sarcastically, her eyes never leaving his. His touch made her uncomfortable. It was blazing and it gave rise to trembles in the pit of her stomach. Before it intensified and spread throughout her body, she stepped back. Hunter fisted his hand and pulled i

30"I told you not to mess with me. But no, you wanted to prove how courageous you are. What happened to that courage? It went down the drain, didn't it?" Claire kept looking at the document in front of her. Even if she had cunning things to say to Zara, it was pointless. The truth was, she had lost. She lost the battle she boastfully jumped in, hoping that she would win because she was the one who was married for two years to the man she was fighting for. It was him who made her lose. So it would be dumb to speak now. She quietly scribbled her signature on the document and dropped the pen on it. "Take my advice, Claire, now if you want to live a peaceful life then don't cross our path. Hunter and I are inseparable. You will only get disappointment and more defeat if you try your luck with my man again." My man? Claire was flummoxed to hear that. Before she reacted with words, both the official and Hunter returned. He looked between her and Zara grimly. As if trying to find wha

31 "There's no need for it. Besides, the ring is useless to her now. Don't think about it." Zara pretended to be sorrowful. She insisted on going after Claire a few times again as she knew Hunter wouldn't allow it. He left her sitting on a chair to make a call. Zara admired the ring he took from Claire with a sinister grin. "This ring costs fortunes. How could I leave it in Claire's possession?" Zara chuckled and kissed the ring as if it was hers. However, when she puts it on, it won't go beyond her middle phalanges no matter how many times she tried. She tried to push it past all tens of her fingers but it wouldn't move an inch beyond that. Perhaps, this was the justice of fate! She may have succeeded in getting her hands on Hunter. She couldn't succeed in taking Claire's place or possession as his wife. "You will fracture your fingers, Zara." Zara gasped at the sudden eruption of his voice. "Hunter, I... I think I've gained weight over the years." She foolishly said a

291Claire ignored it for as long as it could. There came a moment, though, when she could do nothing but notice how he sat, silently watching her. He looked like a god himself. But he was mesmerized by her beauty as though she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen… And as if there was nobody like her. The man, however, had no idea that he was a fine specimen himself. Claire gulped a knot of desire, trying to focus on driving. It wasn't very long when she realized that asking to drive was a bad idea. Hunter looked seductive in his fitted suit. Every inch of him was calling out to her to jump in his lap and kiss the hëll out of him. That white shirt was inviting her to mark it with her red lipstick. The crisp collars were asking her to crease them in her hold— while those noticeable and enticing veins on his neck teased her, inviting her to trace them with her lips. His fine and toned physique filled half of the car as he exuded a sense of possession and domination. His loo

290Hunter's face was drenched in sweat. Hunter could easily deal with this situation. He wasn’t the kind to fear a psycho, but knowing Claire had planned this date just for him made Mona feel like a threat. He didn't want to let Mona ruin her effort. Everything so far had gone smoothly. Hunter didn't want Mona's arrival to destroy everything. Hence, he decided to go and see her in the men's washroom. "Uh, Claire, I'll just come back. I need to use the restroom." "Okay, I'll wait in the car for you." Hunter saw her leaving and remorse ploughed through him. He apologized to Claire in his heart for lying to her. But going to the restroom was important. It was either that or have Mona ruin their entire day which had been nothing but full of good memories. He walked towards the restroom like an approaching storm, his stride long and hurried. He banged the door open only to find it empty. Casting a gaze around, Hunter checked every door. There was one that was locked. He knocked on it

289Hunter's heart throbbed wildly in his chest as he saw his Dove asking him so innocently about the surprise. His lips curved with a beautiful smile, and he felt like giving it to her just here and now. "No, it's with me." Claire started checking his pockets. But was disappointed to find nothing other than his phone and purse. "Where is it, Hunter? You have nothing on you?" She whined. "Who said I have nothing on me? You haven't checked it thoroughly baby. It's on me and it'll always be on me from now on." He smirked as he kissed her, and she could feel him smirking. "What is it, Hunter? Tell me, I want to know." Claire pressed but Hunter remained quiet. He let Claire take them to their dining venue, and was glad that she had chosen to book an entire room for them. Just them. The table was alight with candles in the centre of the room. A huge chandelier was hanging over their heads as it glowed with lights, casting soft golden light on them. Rest other part of the room was cl

288Hunter's head was clouded by the message he received as he got down the car. Luckily, the restaurant was set in a dim and quiet area. He didn't have to worry getting caught by paps or anyone who could be a bother. He looked at the restaurant and heaved loudly.Reggie noted the worry on his boss' face but kept his concern to himself. He knew that if whatever he received on his phone had been risky, Hunter would have already put him to work to take care of it. He didn't, instead he asked Reggie to leave him alone."Hunter..." Hunter heard Claire's voice somewhere outside the restaurant behind his back.He impatiently whirled around and swept a gaze around. His heart stuttered and grew bigger in size as he noticed Claire— she was standing under a tree in the far corner, wearing a hot and stylish black dress.Hunter strode towards her. His pace was leisurely, his eyes fixed on her. Even his soul was captivated by her appearance and his heart thudded in admiration for her. When he sto

It hadn't been more than an hour since he dropped Claire off to her home, and hearing her panic-stricken voice unsettled him."Dove, what's wrong? Is everything okay at home?" Hunter asked and bit his tongue to stop himself from saying— Did Scott do something again? He heard Claire's heavy breathing and immediately got up."Dove, say something!""H-Hunter... I... I..." Claire sobbed, causing his patience to near its end.At once he grabbed the keys to the bike he rode tonight."Don't worry, Dove, I'm coming over." He literally sprinted towards the door. His body was suddenly cold from terror as Claire's sob was making it worse. Hunter had come around the staircase. He was about to descend when he heard her sniff and ask him not to come.He stalled and stared at nothing in th

  • Regretting Divorce   Chapter 286

286Hunter stared at her, thrown off guard by her words. He reflected back on their meeting in the dark alley, and indeed what he realized made his mouth open a little. Mona hadn't looked like she intended to do anything physically with him. Her grin back then had been playful— one that of a naughty child who knew he was notorious for his mischief. "You can say that I was testing your loyalty towards Claire. I didn't intend to do anything mischievous, Hunter. But you see, Claire ruined everything when she interrupted." Her lips lifted in a sneer as she showed him her left cheek. There was a visible claw mark on her skin from Claire's nails. The scratch was swelling, its edges inflamed and red. Hunter felt bad for her. Now that he knew that Mona didn't mean to do anything condemning in the dark alley of the mall with him, he felt the need to apologize to her on behalf of Claire, but Mona beat him to it as tears flashed in her eyes."No, Hunter. I might want to see you with Claire and

285Hunter's body worked on its own. He felt like someone had trespassed into his territory and snatched one of his shirts that Mona was folding. He growled at her as his eyes seemed to darken even more. In the dim lights he came off as a hunter ready to tear his teeth into her skin and kill her. It wasn't a surprise that Mona was unaffected. She just rolled her eyes and lifted her finely manicured hand to blow over her nails."What the hell are you doing here? How did you come inside?" Hunter hissed."I was trying to be helpful as you can see." Mona said while casting a gaze around.Hunter's walk-in closet was a mess. It looked like a clothes manufacturing factory, unfolded shirts lying here and there, some trousers on the floor as if they were dropped just there after trying them on."I don't need your fucking help, alright! Just tell me why you are here and get the hell out." Hunter gritted out between his clenched teeth.Mona watched his knuckles whiten as he fisted on the shirt h

Hunter smiled a little awkwardly."That's because you're used to having everything done meticulously, Mr. Billionaire. But for normal people like us some mess and chaos is welcome.""Well then," Hunter sighed. "I'll have to make sure there's some chaos in our relationship."Claire chuckled. Later on, they hopped back on the bike and Claire was the one handling it. Hunter sat behind her, admiring her as she flawlessly rode the bike. There were no words exchanged until Claire stopped the bike on the street some yards away from her house.Hunter blinked his eyes as he looked around."Why here, Dove?""Scott's room's window." She pointed as from where they stood they could clearly see that Scott's room's lights were on."Oh." You can work at your father's or mine— wherever you're comfortable and I'd always come to pick you up so we can go home together." Hunter's voice was like warm honey, soothing and sweet. But Claire had more to acknowledge than just his heart-touching words. The surrounding was one of them. What had been a lake enveloped in a blanket of darkness was now glowing with golden lights. It felt as though the blanket was lifted off, revealing the beauty it had hidden underneath. "I'll always cherish you, love you and give you space. You will never have to question your worth or love for me.... Because I'll make sure I live up to your expectations." The pause he took allowed Claire to notice where they were standing— in the middle of a four post bamboo arch. There were colorful flowers and green leaves
