LOGINThe knock came again making her jump as she stretched her hand out to open the door.
She unlocked the door and the hinges creaked softly as she pulled it open. She looked up at the man who stood in the dimly lit hallway. He was tall enough for his shadow to stretch along the wooden floor of the apartment. He wore black trousers,a shirt and a black jacket. His hair slicked back. He looks like someone she could pass by on the street and not even register his face but somehow right now he seemed intimidating. The room suddenly felt smaller. Dalia narrowed her eyes, this guy was dangerous. The quiet kind of danger. He didn't need weapons to make people fearful. She couldn't make a run for it. It would just get her tortured and killed. That was something she desperately needed to avoid. What she needed to do now was play along and act scared to keep the presence of Avery. She studied him carefully. He looked relaxed but not in a way that meant he wouldn't kill her here and now , just in a 'I know she won't do anything stupid ' and boy was he right. His gaze swept the apartment and then stopped on her. "Avery, you need to come with me.." he almost sounded polite but she knew he was far from it. He was just giving her a chance to comply with him so when she disobeyed or resisted he would have an excuse to shoot her. Well too bad she wouldn't give him a chance to do that Her body reacted just as it did when she heard him knock. It annoyed her because she wasn't afraid at the moment. She was more.... cautious. But her fear was justified. From what she knows this man was working for someone, someone worse than him and this wasn't their first encounter. Every instinct in her body pushed her to run but Dalia fought them. She was an assassin who had long removed ever feeling of fear from her mind. She did her job like every mission was her last. "If you resist, it won't be good for you.". He said calmly and she knew he was serious She nodded slowly as she turned around, got her keys and walked out beside him, locking the door. She walked beside him , trying to keep up with his pace, he didn't drag her and just let her comply. As they stepped out, the cold air hit her skin, reminding her that she did not wear a jacket. They walked towards a black SUV, and the door open and another man stepped out. He looked younger, he stepped aside as Avery stepped into the vehicle. The two men sat besides her on each side, maybe to make sure she didn't try anything stupid like jumping out of the car. That was a thought but she was already bruised enough. The car pulled away, Dalia's eyes remained on the window on her left. She decided that no matter what she had to take note of everything so she could find her way home incase anything bad happens. But it felt like these men read her mind because before they moved far, a black hood was placed over her head. She leaned back into the seat. She didn't need sight for information, she could just focus. She kept track of the places they passed-the rough roads, the stops at the traffic lights, the smell of water which meant they were going towards a water body- until the car came to a stop.. An arm held her hand tightly as she was led out of the car and dragged inside. As soon as they stepped in,the cold air made her shiver, air conditioning. Their footsteps echoed as the walked which meant that they were in a large building, with high ceilings and polished floors. She was lead into a room, and tied to a chair. The hood was the removed from her head. The room was empty. With just two chairs and a rectangular table. The men that brought her here walked out of the room. She tested the restraints on her wrist, she could have broken it but she was Avery now. Soon a faint red mark appeared on her wrists from the resistance. She fell back into her thoughts. If these people had dealt with Avery before then they expected her to be frightened, so frightened that she couldn't talk. But she stayed calm. Maybe they would take her as cooperative. She needed to maintain this facade. If she suddenly started acting like someone trained to survive an interrogation , they would have suspicions that she had been pretending because they wouldn't believe she wasn't Avery. She lowered her shoulders, put her head down and let her hair cover her face. She allowed her breathing to become uneven. This caused her shoulder to shake. The fear in Avery's body helped with her act. She could feel it clawing at her mind. Whatever she had experienced had not only left her with scars but also truma. Who exactly had her father gotten her involved in. The silence stretch across the room until she heard the door open. She fought the urge to see who it was and kept her head down. There were multiple footsteps. Her head was down just enough to hide the cold calculation in her eyes. Right now she needed to become Avery. Scared and frightened Avery. The steps pulled her out of her thoughts. A man walked towards the table, while two stood not too far behind her. She slowly raised her head. She made eye contact with the man in front of her. He was unlike the men who had brought her. They were soldiers but he looked like commanded them. He was wearing and all black suit and had a stoic face. He looked down at her, eyes with no emotions... "You've recovered " he stated like he was making an observation. Dalia remained quiet. So it was them who attacked Avery and left her in this condition.. He reached into his pocket, not saying another word. He pulled out a small speaker and set it on the table. There was static sounds until.... "Hello Avery " A cold calm voice spokeThe drive back home was filled with silence. She had boarded a taxi from Lauren group as soon as she had finalised her plans with Cathryn. Her mind was at ease because she had a plan to get through all this trouble. It was still shocking how the last person she would have least expected would help her but she felt grateful she wasn't alone anymore. Cathryn had told her to report to the office the next day so she would begin her fake job but what she would really be doing was trying to get back into her old accounts. she would provide her with high quality equipment tomorrow. The taxi soon arrived at her apartment building. She paid, went up to her apartment, she walked in and locked the door behind her. she couldn't take any chances. The place was quiet and warm just as she left it. Even though she was an assassin who didn't care much about anything one thing she really cared about was her living condition. The whole debt thing might have distracted her from how she dressed or
The office was silent after her words. Cathryn didn't interrupt her, she just simply listened. Something in Avery's mind told her that this woman hated being interrupted just as much as she did. "I, Dalia died and woke up in this girl's body. I don't know how or why I died , I just woke up and found myself here" she continued she looked down at her hands Her name is or ..........was Avery Carter. I have no memories of her life or her friends or her favourite food, nothing. All I had to give me directions was her diary." she looked up at Cathryn as she spoke again "Before I could even find all I needed to I was taken by a man who her father owed. He sent his men and they did this to her, that's how she died" she said as she showed the bruises. "I don't know this man and unlike CARMA I have no equipment to find out who he is, maybe if I knew him I would know how to handle this situation." she paused when she noticed Cathryn's expression of understanding. "I can ask for his name fo
It took a lot to Intrigue Dalia, and for the first time in a long while, she was intrigued By the woman Infront of her. She had spent years perfecting her study of people, learning them, reading the small shifts in their expressions, the slightest hesitation in their voices, those invisible moments that betrayed their true intentions. As an assassin learning these things were a must unless she would have been dead long ago.Everything had pattern, Lies had patterns, greedy had pattern, fear had pattern but Cathryn exhibited none of those patterns. She had sincerity in her eyes, everything she had said, she meant them. This unsettled Avery than if Cathryn had pulled a gun on her.It was either this woman believed every word she had spoken or Dalia had somehow lost the instinct that had kept her alive for years. She doubted the latter. The silence stretched between them, Cathryn didn't rush her, she waited patiently for her to process her words.Avery lowered her eyes, allowing her thou
Avery's eyes remained fixed on Cathryn across the desk. She had to know if this woman had a hand In her death because if she knew who she was then she knew something about how she died but then again if she did know her then she would know that this wasn't Dalia but Avery."How do you know that name" She asked with squinted eyesCathryn didn't answer immediately, instead she leaned back comfortably in her chair, studying Avery with obvious satisfaction that her stunt had made her crack."I have my ways" she said as she finally smiledHe answer was so vague it infuriated Avery. Then she spoke again."Money buys many things, information is one of them. It shocking just how far people will go to find a name of you offer just enormous."Of course she could afford it. She could pay hundreds of people just to fit her and they would but the problem was she had hidden all traces of Dalia when she got better at being KARMA.So the people she sent were either very very good or they accomplished
After deliberating till almost midnight, Dalia had decided that she was going to go to Lauren Group just to see Cathryn. It had been so long since she felt hope but she really hoped it would work out.It felt weird to lower herself just to gain support but pride was outside the window when surviving was the main objective.she decided to take a bath and that helped her wash away most of the stress and anxiety she felt. She got ready for bed and slept off as soon as her head hit the pillow.Morning arrived sooner than Dalia would have wanted. She had a dreamless night. She felt a bit better after that. As Dalia she never slept more than 3 hours because she slept light for her job.She got to thinking about the money and the deadline, she couldn't afford to waste anymore time.Standing before the small wardrobe in Avery bedroom, she searched through her folded clothes. She had nothing expensive, just practical and useful. At the settled on a white blouse and a pair of blue trousers. It
She knew nothing.......she was stuck. All she had to navigate this was some pictures and a diary. She curled her fist. Being ignorant was dangerous.people died because they underestimated what they didn't know. Her mind drifted back to Avery. A smart girl, 24 year old college graduate. No family, no friends, no one to call for help......she was all alone, so alone that if these guys dragged her off in broad day light, no one would notice.Avery looked down at her hands, small, weak and soft. The hands of someone who had never held a weapon. she couldn't even throw a proper punch so there was no sef defence for her. If there was one thing she despised it was being weak, nothing ever ended well with weakness. But now she couldn't waste her time sulking about it, she had this body now. She would have to adapt for now. After everything was over she would train this body because she could never survive like this. Her mind drifted back to everything that just happened. Five million dollars
