The northern gate exploded inward before the horn finished sounding.

The blast threw stones and bodies across the courtyard. I hit the ground hard, ears ringing, smoke filling my lungs.

“They’re inside!” someone screamed.

Not outside.

Inside.

Kael dragged me up by the arm. His face was streaked with ash, eyes blazing.

“This was planned,” he said.

No time to answer.

The black-bannered army surged through the broken gate in waves. Not wild. Not reckless. Structured.
