I stayed on Colton’s lap, his hands still resting on my thighs, grounding me while my world tilted dangerously out of balance. The screen of my phone glowed in the dim room, his father’s name taking up the whole display. My heart stuttered. This was it. The call we’d been waiting for all day.

I took a breath, one that felt like it had to fill more than just my lungs—it had to brace my soul. Then I hit answer.

“Abel, give it to me straight.”

The sound that met me was heavy. Abel’s sigh carried so much weight, I felt it settle in my bones before he even spoke.

“Reeves is dead too. Him and Darcy.” His voice was low, grim. “We’ll need a coroner to confirm, but my instincts are screaming they died at the same time. Whoever called you wasn’t Reeves.”

My stomach sank violently. Like someone had just cut a rope and I was plummeting down a dark well. Cold crept over my skin.

“You can’t be serious?” My voice cracked. A whisper, hoarse and too small to match the sto

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 160

★。\|/。★VANESSA DAVIS★。/|\。★The house was too quiet.I sat in the living room, the blanket still wrapped around my shoulders, my legs tucked beneath me on the couch. The laptop was closed now and resting on the coffee table, the blue glow gone, replaced by the warm light of the lamp beside me. Shadows stretched across the wooden floor, soft and still. I could hear the faint sound of the shower running down the hall—Colton was cleaning up.I tried not to think about the words I had to say.Tried not to feel the pressure in my chest tightening with every passing second. But it was no use. My fingers fidgeted with the corner of the blanket, twisting and untwisting it, and my stomach had that strange hollow feeling. Like I’d swallowed something heavy and it just wouldn’t settle. I hated this part—the waiting. Not just for him to come back, but for the moment I’d have to open my mouth and say something I didn’t want to say out loud.Because I wanted to stay.God, I wanted to stay. But re

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 159

▄︻デ══━一 COLTON HAYES💥 Alina had been far too chatty since we dragged her down into the cellar beneath my father’s house—the same cellar where Tate, the twins, and that mangy idiot she sent to break into my home were now locked up too. The space wasn’t much. Cold, dark, and unforgiving—like the consequences of the choices that brought them here. And despite the chain around her ankle and the healing gash across her temple, Alina still carried that arrogant tilt to her chin. Like she hadn’t lost. But she had. She just didn’t know how to admit it yet.I stood at the top of the cellar stairs for a moment longer than I needed to, one hand gripping the old wooden banister while the other adjusted the sleeves of the fresh shirt I’d thrown on. My clothes were ruined in the scuffle—muddy, torn, and blood-streaked when I'd shifted to follow Vanessa's car. So I’d taken a detour upstairs after the dragging Alina here and put on something cleaner. Something of my father's. Fitting, maybe, consid

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 158

★。\|/。★VANESSA DAVIS★。/|\。★I stayed low, cradling the first aid box tight against my chest as I crept through the edge of the trees, circling the back of the house. Every snap of a branch underfoot made my heart jump into my throat. My wounds stung—sharp cuts slicing through adrenaline, demanding attention. But I couldn’t stop.I needed distance. A straight shot to the car.The house came back into view. I crouched behind the shed, peering through the shadows just in time to see them—Colton’s pack.Wolves. Fast and fluid. A blur of muscle and fur storming through the front door like a silent avalanche.I exhaled.Relief and urgency warred inside me.I bolted for the car.The keys were already in my pocket—thank God. I yanked the door open and slid in, setting the first aid box on the passenger seat as gently as I could, like it might explode if jostled too hard. Which it might since I have no clue what those vials are for. What they contain, or even what they can do.Blood smeared

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 157

★。\|/。★VANESSA DAVIS★。/|\。★I barely flinched at Alina’s venom. Her words tried to claw beneath my skin, but I didn’t let them. I kept writing, scribbling lies wrapped in truth as she unraveled herself across the living room. Her voice had become sharper, brittle and cutting, like a thread stretched too thin.“Then you arrived,” she spat, leaning forward now, her fingers clenched tightly around the armrest of her chair. “Just like me. A city girl who didn’t like the countryside—only you... you made his heart flutter. And then it occurred to me. Getting rid of you would be the one thing that would hurt Colton. And I’d take a bullet to the head first before I let him live happily with you when he rejected me.”The moment hung in the air like a guillotine suspended above my neck. That’s when I heard it.A breath. A shuffle. Too close. Too wrong. From behind me, just slightly to the right, came the sound of movement—a calculated, silent lurch toward me. My body reacted before my brain c

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 156

★。\|/。★VANESSA DAVIS★。/|\。★I kept my hands in plain sight after Alina disappeared into the hallway to get the note and pen, the shadows swallowing her up completely. The narrow corridor behind her had no lights — just darkness, thick and deliberate. My eyes adjusted slowly, and in that haze, I saw him again. The man in the shadows. He moved like he belonged there. Not clumsy. Not curious. Familiar with the space. He followed Alina halfway, just until she turned the corner, then stopped—hovering, listening, maybe watching me. The second his shape disappeared behind the wall, I felt the hairs rise on my arms. To be entirely honest, I expected her to have someone around her. I would have brought someone in to keep me safe, or to help me ambush. I mean, I’m doing the same. I brought Colton and a bunch of wolves with me. That’s called being cautious. No smart bitch would meet a stranger without protection. I wrapped my fingers tighter around the can she'd given me. Cold. Condensation

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 155

★。\|/。★VANESSA DAVIS★。/|\。★Alina came back from the kitchen, looked at me then at the hallway briefly. She glanced towards the windows and then back at me. The house wasn’t small, but it felt like if i stayed in here longer I’d get an infection. They definitely don’t live here. Alina stood at the center of the living room like she owned every breath in the air. It took like fifteen minutes. Well it’s her house. Maybe she did own every breath, in her own mind. Her eyes flicked over me, measuring, reading. She hadn’t stopped smiling since she opened the door — a practiced smile, pleasant on the outside, but holding something venomous underneath. Her eyes finally seemed to register that her standing there made her look like a huge creep. “I’ll be right back,” she said, brushing a loose wave of hair over her shoulder. “You’re going to want a drink for this conversation. I’ll be right back.”Before I could object, she was already moving toward the kitchen — hips swaying, silk robe tra

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 154

★。\|/。★VANESSA DAVIS★。/|\。★The wheels of my car crunched over the gravel road as I pulled up across the street from Tate’s house. It was ten minutes to eight. The sky was darkening into a bruised blue, the air still and watching, like the town itself was holding its breath. My headlights caught on the mailbox at the end of the path and the cracked front steps leading to the porch. There were no lights on in the house—just the faintest amber glow leaking through the curtains. Quiet. Too quiet.I parked the car, turned off the engine, and sat there for a moment, hand clenched on the steering wheel. My pulse was steady, but I felt the pressure building under my skin. This wasn’t just a conversation. It was a trap, or a test. Maybe both. I don’t really care. I’m doing this, but I still can’t shake the nervousness. Should I park further away? Just in case she comes out while I’m in there to slash the tires?Ugh, I don’t know. I guess I don’t need to worry about that right now.I glance

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 153

★。\|/。★VANESSA DAVIS★。/|\。★I hate how quiet Colton gets when he's scared. Not afraid for himself. Never that. But for me—when the fear creeps in and he can’t control it, he goes silent, jaw tight and hands clenched like he's trying to crush the fear right out of his bones. We were still in Abel’s house, Tate locked up downstairs in the cellar like the rat he was. The air in the room was heavy with tension, thicker than the heat outside. Colton stood by the window, back turned, arms folded across his chest, watching the wind move through the fields as if it might answer him.His father had left to do some work around the farm, he said he’d be sending Curtis to keep an eye on the house. So now I’ve come up with a plan to handle Alina, but for that, I need Colton to accept my decision. I cleared my throat, stepping forward with purpose, but my voice was steady. “I’m going to her.”His shoulders tensed. He didn’t turn around. “No.”“I’m not asking.” I folded my arms under my breast.

  • Resisting The Alpha Cowboy   Chapter 151

★。\|/。★VANESSA DAVIS★。/|\。★Tate sat slumped in the chair, pale and sweat-slicked, like something had been siphoned from his spine. He’d broken, but not in the loud, sobbing way I expected. No screaming. No begging. Just a whisper and a look in his eyes like he’d seen hell blink back.I need to take notes from Abel though i hope to never be the one torturing someone for information. And that brings up another thought. My line of job is dangerous but I’m too young to quit. I mean, think about it. I’m not even thirty. So why retire now?“She’s staying at my place,” he said hoarsely. “Alina.” This is what we got him for? I could have guessed that. Damn, i should have broken into his place instead. Colton stood still beside me, arms crossed and shoulders stiff. I could feel the heat rolling off of him—anger, worry, something else bubbling under the surface. He didn’t trust how easy this part was.“She expecting you back soon?” I asked.Tate gave a tight nod. “Yeah. Probably within the
