Chapter 2

Auteur: Green Ghostfire
Jessica brought me home and treated me like something fragile. She had become extremely suspicious. The entire villa was filled with bodyguards, and security cameras were installed everywhere.

Meanwhile, she rarely left my side. She was worried that if she looked away for even a second, I would disappear again.

"Wil, these are your favorite barbecued ribs. I made them myself." Jessica placed a piece of rib on my plate as we sat at the dinner table, her eyes full of expectations.

She had never cooked for me before.

Even when I ran through the rain to deliver a contract for her and caught a fever afterward, all I got was her ordering takeout food for me. She had changed so much after I left, but why did she never care when I had given her my whole heart?

"It's really good. Thank you." I set down my fork and knife and tried to smile at her.

Jessica stared at me for a moment, and the light in her eyes dimmed a little. "Wil... Do you still blame me?"

"No." I shook my head and told her the truth. I did not blame her, because I neither loved nor hated her. Why would I blame anything on a stranger?

"Then, why are you..." Her voice trailed off, almost as if she wanted to ask how I could be so calm. Why was I acting so differently than before, when I would be touched by the smallest thing she did for me in the past. Now, I acted like a polite guest staying in someone else's house.

Just then, the person most responsible for bringing us to this point showed up.

Henry.

He was Jessica's best friend, and he was also the wedge that had come between us two years ago. He was still dressed in that polished way, but there was a trace of jealousy in his eyes when he looked at me.

"Wil, you're back." Henry sat on the couch, holding the cushion that used to be mine, and he looked at me provokingly. "Jessica had been having it hard for the past two years. You can be pretty heartless when you want to, leaving just like that."

Jessica was peeling an apple for me. When she heard that, she paused with the knife still in her hand, but she said nothing.

She was observing my reaction.

I guessed she wanted to see me get angry and jealous, then argue with Henry the way I had in the past because I cared about her. But I no longer felt that way. I simply gave Henry a brief glance as my heart remained still.

"I was," I said as I went along with him, my tone calm as if I was commenting on something insignificant. "Good thing you two are so close. Thank you for taking care of her these past two years."

Henry froze, clearly not expecting his attack to be deflected so easily.

Jessica's expression darkened. She put the peeled apple on the table with a thud. "Wil Lane, what do you mean by that? You don't mind it at all?"

I turned to look into Jessica's eyes and the anger she was trying to hold back. It was confusing for me. I was being generous, reasonable, and not making a scene. Was that not exactly what she wanted?

"Why would I mind?" I asked in a mild tone. "He's your best friend. Of course, he should be taking care of you. I just got back, and I'm getting tired, so I'm going upstairs to rest."

I stood up and left, my steps unhurried.

Behind me, I could hear Jessica let out a muffled roar of anger, followed by the sound of glass shattering.

  • Returning to Her Madness   Chapter 9

With five million in hand, I quit the demanding job I had.I spent a year traveling. I went to see the northern lights, skydived, and went deep diving.I threw myself into every extreme sport I could find just to feel how good it was to be alive. Whenever my heart started pounding fast, I would remember that lifeless villa. I would then breathe in even harder. It was during my travels that I met Susan Jameson. She was not some overbearing CEO, and she was not some obsessive madwoman, either. She was just an ordinary photographer with a warm smile and clean hands. We met under the northern lights in Frostland. She handed me a cup of hot cocoa and asked with a smile, "Cold?"I did not answer the way I had in that mission world like a machine following a script at that moment. Instead, I hunched my shoulders a little and grinned. "I'm freezing here. Share some with me."We fell in love naturally.Susan did not know what kind of past I had. She only knew that sometimes, I would sim

I turned to the system after I watched Jessica sob until she fell apart on the screen and asked, "If the female lead ends up like this, can this microworld still be saved?"The system sighed. "No. It can't be saved now. Her mind has completely collapsed, and her comprehension of this world is falling apart. She's the pillar holding this world together. If she doesn't want to live anymore, the world will be destroyed along with her."Just as I thought. After Jessica finished crying, she slowly got to her feet. She then went to the drawer and took out the lighter she had once treasured most. "Since you don't want to stay in this world, I'll leave with you. The fall into the abyss must be long and cold… I'll go keep you company."Jessica then set the curtains on fire. The flames spread fast as the fire swallowed the luxurious furniture, the bed that held countless memories of ours, and then both her and my bodies.Jessica held my corpse tightly, and even as the fire consumed us, a f

Jessica kissed my forehead gently before walking into the basement. Henry and the thugs were tied to chairs inside. What followed was so brutal that even the system had to censor most of it.Jessica barely needed to interrogate them.Desperate to stay alive, the thugs spilled everything. They told Jessica how Henry had contacted them and given them the drugs, how he had told them to have fun with me, even ordering them to film and take pictures of it. They even copied his vicious tone so perfectly. The evidence was undeniable.Henry was still crying and screaming. "Jessica, I did it for you! That man doesn't love you at all! He's like a block of ice! Only by crushing him would he start depending on you again! Didn't you agree to this from the start? You wanted him to suffer too!"Those words became the final blow that crushed Jessica, because they were all true. She had had a hand in this, too.If it wasn't because she wanted that fantasy of playing the hero, if she had not agre

Jessica said nothing else as she simply stayed beside my body, her eyes cold. The aura of madness around her seemed to have disappeared, replaced by a frightening calm. She glanced at the bodyguards behind her and spoke faintly, as if she were talking about something ordinary. "Take these men and Henry back with you. Don't let a single one of them escape.""Jessica! What are you trying to do?! Aren't we best friends?" Henry screamed in terror and tried to run toward her, but the bodyguards pinned him to the ground without mercy."Seal this place off and investigate everything. I want to know exactly what happened, down to the second," Jessica said before letting them carry my body out. She stayed close the whole time, her hand wrapped around my cold fingers.-The Sand family's private doctor came over in a rush to examine my body. After we returned to the villa, Jessica stayed by the side of my corpse. She brought warm water over and slowly wiped the blood and dirt from my body

The factory doors were kicked open with brutal force, and dust flew everywhere. Jessica looked frantic and sharp at the same time, the harsh light illuminating her back."Wil!" She shouted my name, her voice full of fake panic and affection. In her fantasy, I should be curled up in a corner, shaking with fear. I should have thrown myself into her arms, sobbing, and she would have held me tight, told me she had come too late, and then we would make up.Instead, what welcomed her was a corpse that had lost all signs of life.My body lay on the concrete floor, my clothes torn to shreds, and bruises littered my exposed skin. My face was ashen and drained of all color. My eyes were closed, and dried blood still stained the corner of my mouth. The men who had kidnapped me stood aside, completely lost, with pale faces."What happened..." The expression on Jessica's face froze for a moment as she staggered toward me."Wil? Stop messing around. I'm here... Wil?" She dropped to her knees

That day, Jessica said she wanted apple pie from that old shop on the south side of the city. It had been my favorite dessert two years ago.I drove out, but when I reached a deserted coastal road, my car suddenly died.I got out to take a look, and before I could react, someone had already covered my nose and mouth with a handkerchief that reeked of chemicals. Before I blacked out, my only thought about this was that this was so cliché.-When I woke up again, I was tied to an iron pillar in an abandoned factory. Several thugs stood around me with cameras, looking me over with malicious intentions. An old loudspeaker hung overhead, and Henry's smug voice came through it. "Wil, you're awake? Are you very scared right now?""Henry, this is illegal," I replied calmly. He burst out laughing before saying in a sharp tone. "Haha! Who do you think arranged this? Jessica gave her tacit approval!"My heartbeat stayed steady, and it didn't stir at all.Henry continued, "At first, she o
