Elena's POV

Julian was standing in the doorway of my conference room looking confident as ever.

"Hello, Elena," he said with a smile.

"Julian," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. "How did you get up here?"

"I told security I was a late guest," Julian said, stepping into the room. "They were very helpful."

In his hands was a bouquet of flowers. White roses mixed with some kind of expensive-looking purple blooms. The kind of arrangement that cost hundreds of dollars.

"These are for you," Julian said, offering me the flowers. "Congratulations on your success."

I didn't take them. "Julian, what are you doing here?"

"I came to see you," he said simply. "I've been looking for you for a whole year."

"For a year?" I stared at him in shock. "You've been looking for me for a year?"

"Ever since the incident with Marcus," Julian said. "One day you were Elena Martinez, married to that investment banker. The next day, he was a wanted man and I couldn't get a hold of your contact.

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   054: The Hunt Intensifies

Marcus' POV My stomach cramped with hunger as I watched the businessman walk past me on the crowded sidewalk. His expensive suit, gold watch, and leather briefcase told me everything I needed to know.He had money which I needed so badly. The math was simple.I followed him for like half a block, staying close enough to reach his pocket but far enough away that he wouldn't notice me. My hands shook from hunger and tiredness, but I forced them to be steady.Victor expected two hundred dollars by six o'clock. I had forty-three dollars from the wallet I stole this morning. That left me a hundred and fifty-seven dollars short. And Victor didn't accept excuses anymore. The businessman stopped at a hot dog cart to buy lunch. It was perfect. While he was distracted, counting out change, I moved in behind him.My fingers slipped into his jacket pocket like as if I did this my whole life. Three months of stealing had made me good at it. Good enough to survive.I felt his wallet and carefully

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   053: Unwanted Reunion

Julian Gray's POV I sat in my red Tesla outside the office building, staring up at the twentieth floor where Elena's new business was located. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly I thought I was going to ruin the leather. After one year of searching, I had finally found her.Elena Martinez. The woman I had loved since freshman year of college. The woman who chose Marcus Martinez over me and then disappeared from the world."Just go up there," I said to myself. "The worst she can do is say no."But Elena had already said no once. Five years ago, when I had finally worked up the courage to tell her how I felt. She had been so kind about it, so gentle in her rejection. But it still felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest."Julian, you're my best friend," she said that night in the college library. "I love you, but not in the way you want me to.""But Marcus doesn't treat you right," I had argued. "He's using you, Elena. Can't you see that?""Marcus loves me," she

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   051: Expanding horizons

Elena's POV I stood in the center of my new office, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below. Twenty floors up in the financial district. Glass and steel everywhere. The kind of view that said you had made it. "Ms. Thompson, the caterers are here," said Sarah, my newest employee. She had started last week as my office manager. "Thank you, Sarah. Please show them to the conference room." I smoothed down my navy blue dress and checked my reflection in the window. I looked professional and successful. Nothing like the broken woman Elena Martinez had been one year ago. Phoenix Advisory now had six employees. Two junior consultants, two investigators, an office manager, and a marketing specialist. We had helped over thirty businesses recover stolen money, expose fraud, and protect themselves from financial predators. The local business magazine wrote an article about us last month. "The Rising Phoenix: How One Woman's Mission to Stop Financial Fraud is Changing the

Isabella's POV "Isabella," Marcus said slowly, "do you ever think about Elena?"I thought about the black BMW. About those cold eyes staring at me through the windshield."All the time," I said."Do you think she planned all this?" Marcus asked. "Do you think she knew exactly what would happen to us?""Yes," I said without hesitation. "I have no idea how she did it but I'm sure Elena planned everything. She knew Victor would come for us. She knew we would end up here. She probably knew we would be standing on this corner having this conversation."Marcus was quiet for a few moments. "I underestimated her," he said finally."We all did," I replied. "We thought she was weak. We thought she was stupid. We thought we could use her and throw her away.""And now she's free while we're slaves," Marcus said bitterly."Actually," I said, "I think I saw her today."Marcus looked up at me with tired eyes. "What do you mean?""A black BMW drove by about an hour ago. Elena was inside, looking rig

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   049: Recognition

Isabella's POV I stood in the middle of Fifth Street, staring at the empty space where the black BMW had been. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it over the traffic noise. It was her. I was sure of it.Elena was definitely in that car, looking right at me with those cold eyes. Smiling like she was enjoying a private joke. But when I tried to walk to the car, she rolled up her window and drove away into the traffic. Now there was nothing but empty road and crushed dreams "Elena," I whispered to myself. "That was Elena."A businessman walking by gave me a strange look. I realized I was standing in the street, talking to myself like a crazy person.Maybe I was going crazy. Maybe weeks of selling stolen goods and eating one meal a day were finally getting to me.But I knew what I saw. Elena's blonde hair. Her perfect skin. That smile that had haunted my nightmares since the night Victor's men dragged us away. She was free. She was driving an expensive car. She was probably livi
