Amanda's eyes were wild, bloodshot and unblinking. As if the truth hadn’t settled yet, the denial still clawed its way up her throat. Nurses tried to hold her back, but she screamed so loud it shook the walls.

"Let me see her!" she wailed, voice cracking, tearing, bleeding with grief. "My baby! My Bella! Her knees buckled but she fought against the arms trying to steady her. “No! Don’t touch me! I need to see her. I need to hold her. She’s cold, isn’t she? God! She’s cold!”

Xander on the other side couldn't move, he was as stiff as a stick. He waited, maybe they would tell him, it's a prank. His hands were clenched at his sides, so tight the knuckles blanched white. His face looked carved from stone, but his hollow, rimmed red eyes betrayed him. He didn't cry. He couldn’t. It was as if his body refused to allow it, like shedding a tear would make it real, final, irreversible.
