Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat
Gina turned to Dad. "What do you think, Mr. Townsend?"

Dad gave me a good long look. I saw a mix of exhaustion, helplessness, and defeated acceptance in his eyes.

When I was eight, Evelyn turned down a million-dollar paycheck so she could stay home and teach me how to read. She spent an entire year on that, holding up flashcards and reading the words to me over and over again.

I'd simply stared blankly at her the whole time.

In the end, she threw the cards into the trash, her eyes red as she stroked my head. She told me that it didn't matter. The Townsends could afford to take care of someone who needed to rely on others for the rest of his life.

When I was ten, Julian brought in the top neurologist from abroad to check on me. All kinds of cold instruments were attached to my head. The results showed that I had an abnormally active cerebral cortex, but for some reason, I couldn't develop normal speech and logical processing.

Julian had clutched the report and stood outside my door, crying the entire night.

After that, no one tried to work on me anymore. I didn't have to think, speak, or take responsibility for anything.

That had been the life I'd wanted most.

But right now, someone was trying to destroy the peaceful cage I'd built up for myself.

"Take him outside," Dad finally said, his throat dry and his voice rough. "Without my permission, no one is allowed to bring him back inside."

Carl tightened his grip on my arm and tried to pull me toward the door, but I didn't move. My feet seemed rooted to the carpet.

He froze for a moment before giving me a hard tug. "Stop acting up, Mr. Townsend. Come with me now."

Still, I didn't budge. I simply stared quietly at the contract on the table.

Gina frowned. Maintaining her gentle facade, she approached me and said in a lowered voice, "Don't piss off your father, Logan. Now's not the time for one of your hissy fits. Behave yourself, and I'll buy you some candy later."

A hissy fit, huh?

She pretended to be all respectful toward me in the presence of my family, but when she knew that only I could hear her, she had no qualms about describing my response as a hissy fit.

I raised my head and stared into her eyes. It made her uneasy, and she instinctively stepped backward. She couldn't believe she felt a sense of intimidation from a dimwit like me.

Surely it had to be an illusion. That couldn't be real.

"Why are you still here!" Dad abruptly slammed his hand against the table. Water splashed from the glass and spilled across the wooden table. "Do I have to drag you out myself?"

Sighing, Evelyn came over to lead me out. "Come, Logan. I'll take you outside."

Just as her hand was about to touch my shoulder, Lucille glanced at her watch.

"You have five minutes left, Mr. Townsend. My patience is limited. If you think refusing to sign the contract is somehow a sign of resilience on your end, I won't force you. I'll just see you in court."

She rose to her feet and leisurely buttoned her suit jacket.

"However, when that happens, it won't be a peaceful acquisition. The Townsend family's assets will be forcibly liquidated. Your wife and this youngest son who can't even speak will probably end up on the streets."

Her words had pushed the right buttons, hitting Dad where it hurt the most. His shoulders slumped. It looked like he'd aged ten years in the blink of an eye.

"I'll sign the contract," he said, the words heavy.

Gina immediately pushed the agreement toward him before uncapping a fountain pen and respectfully holding it out to him.

"You've made a wise choice, Mr. Townsend."

The black Montblanc fountain pen gleamed coldly under the lights. Dad's hand remained suspended in midair for a long time as he hesitated to take it.

Julian bit his lower lip, his eyes misting over.

"Is there really no other way, Gina?" he asked, looking at her as if she were our family's final lifeline.

A barely perceptible flash of pity appeared in Gina's eyes, but it was quickly concealed beneath her usual gentle expression.

"Julian, if there were even the slightest chance of saving the company, I would never let Mr. Townsend sign this contract."

"All of you will be joining me here soon enough! Hahaha!" Gina's deranged laughter echoed behind me, but I didn't look back at her.She thought I couldn't defeat the Webbers, huh?I'd sent more than my fair share of international business magnates to prison in my previous life. Dealing with a family like the Webbers was child's play.I walked out of the detention center into the glaring sunlight. Evelyn was sitting in her car, waiting for me. I opened the door and got in."How did it go? Did you get anything out of her?"She handed me a bottle of water, her gaze concerned. I unscrewed the cap and took a sip."Evelyn, lock down that plot of land in the south of the city completely. Don't let a single fly in. Contact the top geological analysis team in the country and have them enter the site secretly."Evelyn's expression changed. "You're saying that…""We're sitting on a gold mine, and we almost let someone trick us into handing it over."I looked out at the scenery rushing pa

"How does it feel to know you'll be spending the next 15 years of your life behind bars, Gina?" I asked, my gaze calm as I leaned back in my chair."I heard the hardened criminals here have been giving you some 'special attention' every day. After all, a sophisticated woman like you, who hides behind her mask of civility while conning people out of their money, is exactly the type they fancy the most."Gina's body shook. She gripped the iron bars tightly, the whites of her eyes streaked red."Logan! What the hell do you want? You've already put me behind bars! Do you want me dead before you're satisfied?""Dead? You're not worth the effort." I leaned closer to the barred window and lowered my voice."Lucille's funding chain has collapsed, but why did the overseas private equity fund supporting her suddenly pull its investment right before you guys set up your little trap for us? Who tipped them off in advance and made Lucille the sacrificial pawn?"Gina stiffened. Her eyes darted

Although the Townsends were a proud bunch, they were commendable when it came to their willingness to admit their mistakes."Julian, your lab has been working on biopharmaceuticals lately, right?" I suddenly changed the subject.Julian froze for a moment before nodding. "Yeah, but we're in severe need of funding, and I've been afraid to ask Dad for money."I opened a drawer and slid over the stock ownership certificate for the new energy company I'd taken from Lucille yesterday."Sell this and put all the proceeds into your lab. Townsend Corporation can no longer rely solely on real estate and the finance sector. Technology is the future."Julian was almost dazed by the stock certificate for a company worth a billion dollars. He stared at me wide-eyed, his voice trembling as he exclaimed, "Logan, y-you're really giving something this valuable to me? Aren't you afraid I'll screw things up and lose everything?"I lowered my head and continued reviewing the documents in front of me.

"Ms. Whitman has been… I mean, she was handling the case before she was arrested, so it comes under your responsibility now. Do you need me to read it out loud for you?"She deliberately emphasized the last few words. It was obvious she was trying to throw her weight around in front of me because she thought I couldn't understand legal documents.Without even looking up, I continued flipping through the file I was holding."Ms. Oakley, how many years have you worked under Gina Whitman?"Robin froze for a moment, seemingly caught off guard by my question."Five years.""Five years, huh?" I finally closed the case file and looked up at her. "And after five years, you still haven't learned how to cover your tracks?"Robin's expression changed. "What are you trying to imply, Mr. Townsend?"I tossed a financial statement I'd compiled the night before onto the desk in front of her."You drafted the original contract for that project in the west of the city. You deliberately left loo

I lowered my head and put on a sorrowful expression. "But Ms. Whitman was so awful today. She was trying to destroy all our lives. I couldn't keep pretending anymore."The excuse was only half true and somewhat flimsy, but for parents who doted on their children, it was more than enough."My dear son…" Dad's eyes instantly reddened, and he pulled me into his arms, his grip so strong that it felt like he was about to crush me."It's all my fault. I was so blind! You've suffered so much all these years because of me."Julian also threw his arms around me, his eyes glistening. "I'm sorry, Logan. I'm so sorry. I thought you really… I don't even know the first thing about what you like…"Evelyn stood to the side and silently wiped away her tears. Then she walked over and gently stroked my hair. Her movements were light, but they carried a respect I'd never seen from her before."Logan, I'll never consider you a nuisance again. From now on, you have the final say in the family."I let

The moment those words left my mouth, it wasn't just Lucille who was flabbergasted. Even Dad and Evelyn froze. The plot of land in the south of the city was a hot potato. The government had refused to approve its development plans for years, and it had been sitting there, untouched and unusable.Lucille's new energy company, on the other hand, was a genuinely valuable core asset, even if it was currently struggling with liquidity. This was nothing short of daylight robbery."You've got to be kidding me!" Lucille scoffed in fury. "A billion-dollar company for a worthless piece of land? You've got quite the nerve, Logan!"I leaned back in my chair, remaining completely unruffled."You don't seem to understand the situation you're in, Ms. Farley. I'm not negotiating a business deal with you. I'm showing you how you can buy your way out of the mess you're in."The moment news of your cash-flow crisis gets out, your new energy company will be carved up by your creditors. You won't get
