Chapter 1

For the holiday sales push, I had to close 50 auto loans before New Year's Eve, or I was fired.

It was already December 30th, and no matter how hard I pushed myself, I was still ten loans short.

Just then, a news notification popped up on my phone.

"Barton Group is going all out for the holidays! The top 100 employees are each getting a car!"

Out of sheer desperation, I called Mom. We hadn't spoken in five years.

"I saw the news about the company giving cars to its employees. Can you get the loan through me? I'm just a bit short on my quota this month."

After a long silence, I finally heard Mom say, "Fine."

But immediately after, I heard my twin brother Alan Barton's voice. "Don't bother with him! Didn't he say he wasn't going to rely on the family when he left?"

The line went dead, and all that remained was silence.

A nurse walked into my hospital room to drop a bill demanding payment for my chemotherapy on the bedside table.

"You're not the only one with cancer, you know. We're short on beds here. If you can't pay, then you need to discharge yourself as soon as possible."

The cancer had drained all my savings, so I had no choice but to work while undergoing chemotherapy.

But now, I had not only spent all my money, but my cancer was still not cured. And on top of that, I was about to lose my job.

I maxed out the last bit of available credit on my card, paid off my medical bills, and signed my discharge papers.

Out in the bitter cold, I stood there helplessly, not knowing where to go. I couldn't help but think back on the first half of my life, a life where I'd apparently never been good enough.

Mom was the kind of person who valued achievement above all else, so Alan and I were pitted against each other from day one.

Alan opened his eyes before I did, and somehow that was enough to earn him the right to drink formula. And I was stuck with watered-down baby cereal.

He learned to crawl at six months old, so Mom hired ten nannies just for him.

As for me, I was dumped in a small dark room, fed on a strict schedule like I was some kind of pet.

When we started school, he had the best private tutors and got perfect scores every time.

Meanwhile, even if I came home with a 99%, I'd go without dinner that night.

"If you work hard enough, you can have anything you want. But if you didn't get it, it's simply because you were slacking off. Remember, winners take all. That's how this family works, and that's how the real world works."

Six-year-old me took Mom's words to heart. I told myself I couldn't afford to slack off. I had to earn that missing point, and also Mom's love.

After pulling all-nighters, I went straight to school the next morning and scored a perfect 100% on every exam that semester. But somehow, it still wasn't enough to beat Alan.

Not only did he get perfect scores in every subject, but he also won the city-wide swimming championship.

For winter break, Mom and Dad took him on an overseas trip, leaving me home alone.

I survived on cold water and stale bread every day while waiting for them to come home. But I knew I deserved it. I simply hadn't tried hard enough.

That was when I set a goal for myself. I wanted to get into a better college than Alan's ten years later, no matter what.

Even if it was just once, I wanted Mom to reward me. From that day on, I studied as if my life depended on it, never daring to let myself rest.

Then, on the day the results were released, I collapsed from exhaustion and slept the whole day.

When I woke up at dusk, the house was empty.

A thought suddenly struck me right then. I dug out my exam slips and Alan's.

My hands trembled as I entered our candidate numbers into the computer.

After hesitating for what felt like forever, I finally hit the "Enter" key and nervously opened my eyes.

I beat him by one point! I'd finally beaten him for once!

I crouched in front of the computer, sobbing uncontrollably. Ten years of hard work had finally paid off!

I had to tell Mom the good news! I ran out of the house, only to bump into the neighbor's housekeeper.

She looked confused when she saw me. "Your parents are hosting a college acceptance party at the Grandrow Hotel. They invited everyone in the Crestview Estates. Aren't you going?"

When I got to the hotel, Alan was surrounded by people, practically basking in the attention like royalty.

"Thank you all for coming to my college acceptance party. And thank you, Mom and Dad, for throwing it for me!"

Why was this his party?

I was the one who won this time!

Alan looked deeply displeased. "Why should the whole house have to look like this just because Jeremy died?"I even went out of my way to have a designer put up all the New Year decorations this year. Honestly, the way you two are acting is incredibly disappointing. Do people just become useless trash when they get old?"Mom never expected him to say such things to them. She pointed at him, trembling so badly she couldn't get a word out. Suddenly, she clutched her chest, her face twisting in pain.Dad was too far gone in his madness to notice anything wrong. As for Alan, he simply stood there, watching her coldly. It wasn't until Eleanor came back from running errands and saw what was happening that Mom was rushed to the hospital.Mom was diagnosed with a heart attack. Luckily, she got there in time and survived. Yet, she suddenly seemed like a shell of her former self.As Alan put it, she'd become a complete good-for-nothing now. With a lunatic and an old woman who could b

Dad, who had been barely holding himself together, finally broke down. He pounded the wall, sobbing uncontrollably. "It's all because he was terrified of you! Jeremy had been afraid of you since he was a little boy!"He didn't have to die! He was sick and freezing, but he still shoved all that food into his mouth! He came back last night just to see us one last time!"The officers looked both helpless and bewildered by what they heard. "Seriously? Are you telling me the youngest son of the family that runs Barton Group couldn't afford medical treatment?"And that he was crouching outside his own home in sub-zero weather because he was too afraid to go inside?"Fed up with being detained for questioning, Alan walked over to the police, planted his hands on the desk, and said, "What's so hard to believe? In our family, everyone has to earn their keep."He simply didn't have what it took. He was worse than me at everything, so naturally my parents weren't going to waste money on hi

Even after my body was brought into the mortuary, Mom, Dad, and Alan were still arguing.Dad pointed an accusatory finger at Mom. "Look at what you've done to the kids! His own brother just died! And he doesn't even seem to care! You're the one who drove Jeremy to his death!"Mom shoved him away, flying into a rage. "I didn't do anything wrong! It was his own fault that he was useless! He couldn't do anything right! He didn't even have the guts to say a single word to my face! "Anyone who could actually kill themselves like that doesn't deserve to be my son!"Her voice was still echoing in the mortuary halls when two police officers approached her. "We got a report from the staff here about a body with an unknown cause of death. We're here to investigate."When Alan heard that, he said coldly from the sidelines, "He knew he was useless, so he poisoned himself."The officers ignored his arrogant attitude and took all three of them into an office. "We just need to confirm some bas

As I watched Alan relentlessly tear into Dad, I couldn't help thinking that I'd already heard such words at his college acceptance party.Mom's summary of those words back then was that I was utterly worthless. And what she said was what drove me out of the house. After leaving home, I hadn't the slightest idea where to go.In the end, I snuck into my old high school dorm, which was completely empty.I slept on the floor and lived on cold water, but without Mom constantly lecturing me, I actually felt lighter than I ever had.Still, the fact that no one ever came looking for me hurt more than I wanted to admit. I swore to myself that I would make something of my life, just to make them regret it.As my family was considered wealthy, I didn't qualify for student loans or financial aid. Thus, I did whatever it took to make money, whether it was working in a coffee shop, delivering food, or tutoring.I had to earn enough for tuition before the semester started. But going to co

Upon hearing that, Dad let out an anguished cry. He pounded his fists against the floor.Only then did Alan call an ambulance. The vehicle that came right after it was a hearse.Mom, Dad, and Alan sat in the car. They avoided each other's gaze like they were strangers.Suddenly, Mom's phone rang. She answered it mechanically. A man's voice came through the speaker. "Excuse me, are you Jeremy Barton's mother? I'm calling from the bank. Your son's credit card payment is overdue. We haven't been able to reach him. Please remind him to make his payment on time."In the deathly silent hearse, the voice was piercingly clear. Alan suddenly lit up, looking almost excited. "I knew there had to be a reason he died. Turns out he killed himself because he was drowning in debt!"The blood around his mouth proves it. He must've poisoned himself. That good-for-nothing was pathetic right up to the very end!"He was in such a rush to get Mom to do the car loans, and he even tried to get Uncle

But Dad didn't do as Mom said this time. He pressed, "Shouldn't we take Jeremy to the hospital?"Mom, completely frazzled, shoved him away. "I told you he's fine! He can pull through this himself! There's no way a son of mine is so weak that he can't even handle something like this!"The three of them just sat on the couch in silence, just waiting for me to wake up. Then, a low buzzing drifted into their ears. It was a fly.Mom shot up and instantly swatted it dead.Dad asked, his voice trembling, "Why are there flies in this weather?"No sooner had he finished speaking than a second fly appeared. Then, more kept coming. They landed on my head, becoming too many to shoo away.Mom and Dad flailed their hands wildly to swat the flies away, only to knock into me by accident. My body jolted, and a gurgling sound escaped my throat as trapped gas was released. Everyone turned deathly pale.Mom nudged Dad, looking completely dazed. "Go check on him."Dad nudged Alan instead. "You
