The walk to Jax’s room was the longest three minutes of my life. I kept looking over my shoulder. When we got to his door, Jax didn't say a word. He just unlocked it, stepped inside, and reached under his bed. He pulled out the old sneaker and handed me the small black USB drive.

"Keep it safe," Jax whispered. "Don't be careless with it."

"I won't," I said, sliding it into the small coin pocket of my jeans. It fit perfectly, pressed against my hip. "I’ll keep it on me. Always."

I left his room

I ran through the morning fog. I didn't even tie my laces properly; they were flopping against the pavement as I sprinted toward the arena. My heart was a hammer hitting my ribs. “Please be there. Please be there” I kept repeating in my head.I reached the arena and pushed through the heavy glass doors. I didn't even stop to talk to the morning guard. I just flew past the front desk and down the concrete stairs that led to the locker room.I hit the door with my shoulder, bursting inside. The room was dark, the only light coming from the small windows high up on the walls. I dropped to my knees on the cold floor. I started searching the wooden bench, my hands trembling. I looked in the cracks of the wood. I looked behind my gear bag. Nothing.I scrambled over to the shower area. I looked at the floor where I had stood yesterday. I checked the drains. I checked the small ledges where people put their soap. I even checked the trash can, digging through damp paper towels with my bare han

The whistle finally blew, and the sound felt like a bell of mercy. Practice was over.I stood in the center of the rink, my head throbbing. Every time I had turned on the ice, I felt the world tilt. I skated slowly toward the bench, my legs feeling like they were made of stone. Jax was already there, pulling his helmet off. He looked at me with a worried expression. We walked into the locker room, and the heat hit me like a wall. The room smelled of sweat and damp gear. Usually, I could handle it, but with the hangover still humming in my ears, it made my stomach flip. I slumped into my stall and started unhooking my pads. My fingers were shaky, and the laces on my skates felt like they were tied in a thousand knots."You look like death, Cap," Swiss said. He was already half dressed, looking much better than he had an hour ago. "You’ve got that grey color in your face.""I’m fine," I muttered, but my voice was cracked."No, you’re not," Toby added, sitting down next to me. He leaned i

Over here!"I turned to see Swiss, Toby, and a few of the other guys from the team. They were standing near the campus gate, looking energized and loud and dressed in hoodies and jeans, looking like normal college students for once."We’re going to The Blue Bucket," Swiss said, throwing an arm around my neck as he reached me. "Coach Mike is in a mood,

The next morning, I walked into the building with my head down, my gear bag hanging heavy on my shoulder. I had deleted that recording. It was gone. The only proof that Marcus was a paid spy was sitting in a trash folder in my brain, and I couldn't get it back. All we had now was the USB drive .Usually, Marcus would be the first person I saw whenever I entered the locker room. He’d be sitting by the skate sharpener, the sparks flying, or he’d be throwing clean towels at the guys as they walked in.Today, the sharpening station was empty. The towels were still in the big plastic bags. "Yo, has anyone seen Marcus?" Toby asked. He was sitting at his stall, holding one of his skates. He looked at the dull blade and frowned. "I left my skates here last night for him to sharpen, but they look exactly the same. He’s usually done with these by 7:00 AM."I sat down at my stall and started unzipping my bag. I didn't look up. "Maybe he's sick," I said. My voice sounded flat, even to my own ear

"I told you on the ice," Davis said, his voice steady even though I still had him pinned. "I’m not a snitch. I don't care about your private life. I don't care who you kiss or who your dad pays off. I just want to play hockey. But every time I turn around, you’re making it impossible because you’re acting like a crazy person."Jax finally managed to pull my hands away. I let go of Davis’s hoodie and stepped back, breathing hard. "He was just coming for his laces, Liam," Jax whispered, standing between us. He looked at Davis. "You didn't hear us talking about Marcus? You didn't hear anything about a drive?"Davis straightened his hoodie. He wouldn't look at Jax. He kept his eyes on me. "I heard shouting. I heard someone run out of the room like their hair was on fire. That’s it. I don't want to know your business. Keep me out of it."He pushed past us, walking toward the locker room door. He didn't look back. He just went inside and slammed the door shut.I stood in the hallway, looki

A recording started to play. It was Marcus’s voice from ten seconds ago: "I’m working for the man who owns this school... Your father pays my tuition... I have the photo."Marcus’s eyes widened."That’s a confession of blackmail, Marcus," I said. "In this state, that’s a felony. And since you’re a student, it means immediate expulsion and jail time. I don't think my father is going to keep paying for a lawyer once you’re useless to him. He doesn't like losers.""You wouldn't," Marcus whispered. "You’d have to show the photo to prove what I was blackmailing you with. You’d ruin yourself just to get me?""I’ve spent my whole life being afraid of what people think," I said, stepping right into his face. I could smell the fear on him now. "But I’m more afraid of being a puppet. If I have to go down to take you and my father’s plan with me, I’ll do it. I have nothing left to lose. But you? You lose everything."I grabbed the phone out of his hand. "Now, you're going to tell me exactly what
