It was his sister-in-law; Gina Pierce. I knew this just from the way she stood and the aura she was exuding. No one else, other than the ‘Mother of the Blood Moon pack’ could carry themselves in such an uplifted and dignified manner.

I wiped my hands with a cloth and summoned a very fake bright smile on my face as I said, “Greetings. If it wasn’t already obvious, I am washing the dirty dishes of your household as instructed by the head maid.”

It was only after saying those words that I realised how rude and disrespectful they sounded out loud. I gave myself an internal facepalm. This was Alpha Lucian’s late brother’s wife and someone who everyone knew he cherished dearly.

The angry expression that was Gina’s face could give Jonathan’s expression whenever someone praised me for something a run for his money.

“How dare you speak like that to me? Do you have any idea who I am? And who gave you the permission to roam about and do as you please in this house? Just who exactly do you think you are, Ruby of the Blue Sky?”

Aah… so she knows who I am. And also, did she just equate washing dirty dishes to roaming about and doing as I pleased? I didn’t want to say it out loud, but perhaps this lady had issues with her eyes and brain.

Nevertheless, I took a deep breath and calmed myself down. Getting on the bad side of this lady in front of me would do me no good. I should control myself.

With that thought in mind, I began speaking. “It seems you’ve not been made aware of my situation yet. Alpha Lucian has decided to take pity on me and grant me the chance of serving this pack as a general maid.”

The angry expression on Gina’s face didn’t relax one bit as she scoffed, then crossed her arms. “I see. It’s a wonder how he didn’t kill you with his bare hands and has even taken pity on you. But no worries, I will help him get rid of you.”

Before I could register her last sentence in my head, Gina had closed the gap between us in a split second and covered my throat with her palm, squeezing tight.

What the fuck!?

I gasped for air as I wrapped my hands on hers and tried to pry her fingers off my neck. Sadly, I couldn’t even get her pinky finger off my neck. It was well known that Gina was a Delta. Though not very powerful, she was certainly more powerful than a weak Omega like me.

Also, take account of the fact that I was even weaker than average Omegas as I had spent most of my time, while growing up, indoors and reading books instead of strengthening my stamina and learning the basics of defending myself if need be.

“Ugh! L-let g-go of m-me!” I slapped Gina’s hand, struggling against her.

My feet were no longer touching the floor and I could see that my hands had turned red. It wouldn’t be outrageous to believe that my neck and above would be blue by now.

“And why should I? While I was sobbing about the disappearance of my only child, what were you doing? Living frivolously two floors above my ten-year-old son who was being tortured beyond measure. Death is too much mercy for you and that vile brother of yours.” Gina said, spiteful.

Okay, hold on. Tortured beyond measure?! She was blowing the kidnap case out of proportion. And also, why did she make it sound as though I was working with Jonathan?

I didn’t get to ask any of these questions as I felt my life slipping away from me. I felt like if I didn’t die by strangulation, I would probably die from the millions of annoying memories that were flashing through my eyes.

But before I got to see the white light at the end of the tunnel and ascend to the afterlife, someone rushed into the kitchen and came to my aid.

“Head Healer! What are you doing?!”

At the sudden intrusion, Gina’s grip on my neck eased up a little bit. She turned to the person and said, “Isn’t it obvious?”

“But Head Healer, the Alpha personally instructed that no harm should be done on Ruby of the Blue Sky. He said anyone who dares to physically harm her would pay with their life!” The newcomer reasoned.

A moment slowly passed before Gina completely let go of me and took a step backwards. I fell on the ground immediately and clutched my throat as I swallowed huge bundles of air, trying to get back the oxygen that was stolen from me.

“I see…” was the only thing Gina said to the newcomer before turning to face me. I lifted my head to match her loathful gaze.

“Thank the goddess that you were able to slip from my grasp this time. I won’t be so merciful next time.” With that said, Gina marched out of the kitchen.

I would count that as a small victory for today.

While still gasping for air, I saw a glass of water hanging in front of my face. I looked up to see an unfamiliar feminine face dotted with freckles. The girl looked to be about my age with innocent features and curly red hair.

I grabbed the glass of water from her hand and downed the entire thing in one go, then handed the empty glass back to her.

“Thank you.”

I was thanking her for saving my life. If she hadn’t come the time that she did, I’d have been on a one-way train to perdition.

Like she understood what my thank you meant, she responded, “Anytime. Head Healer might appear to be calm and collected but she’s one to act on her emotions instantly without giving a second thought to the consequence.”

Okay… indirectly shading a member of the Pierce family, I liked this girl.

She held out a hand for me and I took it, using her strength to get myself back to my feet. It was only after standing up that I realised she was dressed in the same outfit as me — a maid’s uniform.

“You’re an Omega?” I blurted out.

Instead of being offended, the girl smiled shyly. “Hmm. You too, right?”

I only nodded in response. It wasn’t like she didn’t already know that I was an Omega.

“I’m Sierra. I’ve been working here for a few years now so if you have any questions, you can ask me,” she offered kindly with a sweet smile on her face.

I could tell she was being sincere and it surprised me. It was either she wasn’t originally born in the Blood Moon pack and could sympathise with my situation or she was just being genuinely nice. Either way, it was refreshing seeing someone being nice to me with no hint of wanting something in return.

And so, I couldn’t stop the sides of my lips from breaking into a small polite smile.

Her eyes darted behind me and she said, “Do you need any help with that?”

With a confused expression, I glanced behind me and was reminded of the heap of dirty dishes that I was supposed to be washing before I almost met my creator.

“If you don’t mind…” I spoke awkwardly.

Sierra dashed forward and picked up a plate saying, “I’ll wash, you’ll rinse and wipe, okay?”

That was more than okay! I bobbed my head excitedly and we got to work immediately afterward.

Maybe being a maid in this hellhole wouldn’t be as bad as I thought.

“I shall be right behind you,” I answered, still breathless from the zeal of battle.I felt more resolute, perhaps more purposeful, as we journeyed back towards the pack. We were a pack, working towards the same goal, and we would overcome whatever stood in the way.The calm after the rogue attack was more tensioned than relaxed, yet intentional more than careless. The Blood Moon pack had come together once again with a mission of making the pack ready and alert more than ever before in case of an attack. While I passed across the pack grounds, I could sense the atmosphere – a mixture of eager anticipation and tension. You look after me mom, I got this.“Ruby! This way! Encyclia Timothy, workout!” I heard Timothy and turned to him waving his hands. I found him in the training arena practicing his moves.“Hey, Tim! How’s the training?” I asked nearing him with a grin.“Great! I am practicing my footwork just as you taught me!” he said, showing a quick sidestep.“Nice! You are way bette

“Ruby! Are you set?” Timothy asked me, looking over his shoulder with a hint of joy, as he rushed towards me in the common area.“As ready as I can be, Tim,” I said hoping my smile would convince him that I wasn’t scared. “Just remember to remain around the warriors.”“I will! I want to assist in guarding the pack!” he vowed, determination evident in his voice.“Good. Remember, we are all in this together,” I said and affectionately ruffled his hair.Back in the common area, Lucian was at the helm of the warriors addressing the rest. “Tonight against the attacking rogues we have a plan. We’ve reinforced the walls and built cagings. Be alert, and lean on one another.”The warriors nodded in response, serious looks on their faces. Pride overwhelmed me in equal measure. I was part of this pack, ready to take on all the dangers that tomorrow holds.“Tim, you need to be in my line of sight at all times,” Lucian said with his eyes on the small boy. “I want you to learn how we perform our st

“And what sort of thing did you hear?” I queried, feeling my pulse increase at her sudden outburst.“On the next full moon, they—attacks the pack!” they, foolishly, making sure to pronounce the words like they were dancing, giving up “fool her,” meaning all along — scheming against them, completed the rogue’s tale, sounding somewhat hysterical.Lucian, looking grim, met my gaze. “Look, I don’t think we can afford to ignore this. If this rogue isn’t lying, we have to get ready.”“I will inform the rest,” I said, shaking out of it and preparing to share the information.“Stay beside me,” Lucian said and his voice brooked no argument. On the way back to the rest, a strong kink of insistence engulfed me. There was no time to lose in assisting the pack.As soon as we brought edged the warriors, Lucian turned to them and explained the content of the message received from the rogue. “We have been informed that the rabid pack plans an assault towards the next full moon. We must now make arran

“I believe in you! Just keep on training and you will reach that level,” I said feeling proud of him.But not so long after, Lucian walked over to us and watched for a while. “You’re both progressing quite well. Ruby, your footwork is much better than it was before.”“Thanks! I have been trying to improve it,” I said with a blush on my face.“Timothy, you’re nailing down the techniques. That’s good,” Lucian appreciated this and Timothy adored the praise.Anyway, as it went on, I sensed a bond between us strengthening as well. We were a pack, and we aided each other in meeting the challenges that lay before us.Later that evening, when I was already in bed, I felt apprehensive, like we were about to enter into something. The rogue threat was still very fresh in my mind, and I wanted to be ready for it.***The following day, there was a strange sort of tension in the pack house. The warriors were getting ready for an evening patrol along the borders, and I could feel the pressure in th

  • Ruby's Protector   Chapter 36

The following days flew by like the sands in an hourglass as the Blood Moon pack prepared for the upcoming strategy meeting. There was a strong sense of vigilance in the atmosphere; everyone understood the menace posed by rogues who encircled us and it became rather obvious that a pack welfare strategy had to be put in place.“Hey Ruby! I’m sure you’re all geared up for the meeting?” Sierra yelled out while I was entering the common room with a heap of paper files chewing on my lip.“Almost! Just one more go through my notes,” I said shaking my head and paging through the notes nervously. “I just want to make sure that I cover all the bases.”“You are going to be okay! Everyone thinks highly of you,” she said a lot more encouragingly as her smile broke on her face, more light spilled on her figure.“Thanks, Sierra. I hope so. I am just so…” I began and retraced my steps again, not pressed to finish that thought. Excited? Caesar was Brutus billing himself as a saint.“Just keep in mind

  • Ruby's Protector   Chapter 35

The day after Lucian’s birth celebration was a different ball game in the pack house. There was a noise of warriors warming up for training, and with it came great expectation. Nobody was oblivious to the current rogue threat, and the enjoyment experienced from the earlier party wore off and solemnity reigned.“Ruby! Are you ready for training?” Timothy shouted as I walked into the common area still drowsy, trying to shake off sleep.“Ready as I’ll ever be, Tim,” I said, smiling at him. “Let’s see if I can catch up with you today.”Timothy smiled widely, showing how he was feeling. “You will! Just don’t forget what I said last time – we have to work on your footwork!”“Footwork, check. I shall do my best to keep moving my feet,” I said, playfully bouncing on my feet. “You are not going to allow me to lag behind, are you?” “Never! I will make sure you are the best fighter in the pack!” he declared, proudly puffing his chest.I chuckled and appreciated the bond that had formed between
