52. Shopping

I sit in Patterson’s car, fiddling with the hem of my dress. There is an awkward silence. “Where should I drop you?”

Err about that. I can’t tell him about the pharmacy. So I reply, “I want to do some dress shopping… But I don’t know where to go.”

“What’s the occasion?”

“Yes, I need a party gown for the evening.”

“Oh Obviously. It’s a casino. So shop accordingly.”

Oh. I didn’t know that. “Are you coming?”

He shakes his head. “I am busy. Camilla will go.”

I cross my arms and look out at houses passing by. Of course Camilla will go. She would be Mikolaj’s date. What is she even doing here? I tap my feet, letting myself fume in my seat, wondering if Mikolaj was really indifferent or I am, as usual, overthinking?

“So… Are you going to office too?” Thankfully, Patteson asks and I am momentarily distracted.

I shake my head. “No. Although Mikolaj gave me some assignments at his place.” But I will ask him if I can come to office a few times a week.

Patterson nods.
