Luca’s POV

Another pause. I could hear Dante breathing on the other end, steady but tense.

“I’m coming back tonight,” I told him. “I need you to keep your eyes open. Don’t let Denise out of your sight. And don’t let her know we suspect anything.”

“I understand,” Dante said firmly. “I’ll handle it.”

I ended the call and stared at the wall in front of me.

Fear sat deep in my chest now, cold and heavy. Someone was playing a dangerous game inside my home.

And my wife was missing.

After that, I didn’t waste time. I called Andrea.

My heart was beating too fast as the phone rang. Once. Twice. Then she answered.

“Luca?” she said. “Is everything okay?”

“Where are you right now?” I asked, keeping my voice calm even though panic was already creeping in.

“I just left Dee in your room,” she replied. “I was about to head back to—”

“Stop,” I cut in. “Andrea, listen to me. Go to your room right now. Lock the door.”

There was a pause.

“Luca… what?” she asked, sounding unsure now. “Why?”

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 167

Dahlia’s POVThe moment I stepped out of the basement, it felt wrong.Like the world had tilted slightly off its axis and never bothered to correct itself. The door closed behind me with a low, final sound, thick and heavy, and something inside my chest cracked open. It wasn’t just a door shutting. It felt like a sentence being passed. Like I was abandoning him. Like I was walking away from my own heart and locking it in the dark.Luca’s face burned behind my eyes. The way his voice had broken when he begged Leonardo to let me go.The way he had stepped forward, shoulders squared, offering himself like a sacrifice.Take me instead.I swallowed hard, but it did nothing. The ache in my throat only grew sharper. My hands shook uncontrollably. I stared at them, at how useless they were, how weak I had become. Fear crawled under my skin and settled deep in my bones, cold and suffocating. If anything happened to Luca—if he was hurt, if he died down there because of me—I knew, with terrifyin

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 166

Luca’s POVMy chest tightened so hard it hurt to breathe. The weight of her words pressed down on me, heavy and terrifying and real. I thought of our child. Thought of the life we hadn’t even begun yet.“I promise,” I said without hesitation. My voice was steady now, even though my eyes burned. “On my life. On our child. I will come back to you.”Behind us, I heard Leonardo scoff. The sound was sharp and mocking, full of cruelty, like my pain amused him. I didn’t turn. I didn’t react. He didn’t exist in that moment.Nothing existed except her. There was something else I needed to say. Something I had held back for too long. Fear had kept it locked inside me, fear that loving her this deeply would give the world another way to destroy me.But now?Now it felt stupid to keep it hidden.“I love you,” I said softly. The words felt strange and right all at once, like they had been waiting their whole life to be spoken. Her breath caught. Her eyes widened, then filled even more with tears.

Luca’s POV“Let her go.”The words tore out of my chest before I could stop them. My voice sounded rough, broken, like it had been dragged over glass. “She has nothing to do with this. Whatever you think I took from you, whatever hatred you’re carrying—this is between you and me.”Behind me, there was a soft movement.A breath. Then a weak voice that nearly destroyed me.“Luca…”I spun halfway around, my heart slamming hard against my ribs. Dahlia’s eyes were open now. She looked disoriented, scared, her lashes fluttering as she tried to understand where she was. Her hands were still tied. Her body was still trapped in that chair.“I’m here,” I said quickly, forcing strength into my voice even though I felt like I was falling apart inside. “I’m right here, princess. You’re not alone. Don’t be scared.”Her eyes found mine. Relief and fear crashed together on her face. Tears filled her eyes, spilling over as her lips trembled. That sight alone almost broke me.I turned back to Leonardo

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 164

Luca’s POV“I’m going in alone,” I said.My voice didn’t sound like my own. It was rough, strained, like it could crack at any second. Saying the words made everything feel terrifyingly real.Immediately, Dante stepped closer. He placed a firm hand on my shoulder, steady and solid. His eyes searched my face, filled with concern and something close to fear for me.“Are you sure?” he asked quietly.I let out a shaky breath and nodded. “I don’t have a choice.”He studied me for a moment longer, then nodded. He understood. They all did. He stepped aside, giving me a clear path to the door.“Be careful,” he said softly.I met his eyes for a brief second, then turned back to the basement door. My heart was racing, fear and rage twisting together inside me until I felt like I might tear apart. My hands trembled, but I forced them to steady. Somewhere beyond that door, Dahlia was waiting for me.The thought stayed with me like a wound that wouldn’t close. It burned. It hurt. It was the only t

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 163

Luca’s POVWe finally reached the address Marco had given me.The mansion sat far back from the road, hidden behind tall iron gates and rows of old trees that blocked most of the moonlight. It looked quiet. Too quiet. The kind of place that pretends to sleep while danger stays wide awake inside.Marco was in one of the cars behind mine, wedged between two of my men. His hands were tied, his face pale under the bruises. He kept his head down, but I knew he could feel what was coming. I didn’t look at him. Not now. My focus was on one thing only.Dahlia.I raised my hand, and all the cars stopped at once. Engines went silent. Doors opened softly. My men stepped out, moving with practiced ease, guns in hand, faces hard and ready. The air felt heavy, like it was holding its breath.“We park here,” I said quietly. “From this point on, no mistakes.”They nodded.I looked at each of them, one by one. These men had followed me for years. They had bled for me. Killed for me. Tonight was no dif

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 162

Dahlia’s POVI didn’t know how long I had been sitting there.Time felt strange in the dark, like it didn’t move the way it used to. My wrists hurt from the ropes, my back ached from the chair, and my throat felt dry from fear and silence. The darkness pressed in on me from all sides. I couldn’t see anything. I could barely hear anything except my own breathing and the pounding of my heart. Then I heard it.A door.It opened slowly, the sound loud in the quiet room. My breath caught in my chest. Footsteps followed. Calm. Unhurried. They moved closer, one step at a time, and with every step my fear grew. I held my breath without meaning to, my body stiff with panic.Suddenly, the lights snapped on.I gasped, squeezing my eyes shut as the brightness burned. When I opened them again, a tall man was standing right in front of me. The light made his shadow stretch across the floor toward my feet.He looked young. Around my age. Well put together. Calm in a way that felt wrong.I stared at h
