Chapter 7
Samantha Downs ~
Thankfully, I am the only one who needs to make use of the elevator on this floor. I got in. On the controls were numbers one to ten. I pushed the number ten button and in a few seconds, the elevator began ascending. To be honest with myself, this is my first appearance in this company. I never really had anything to do with KressCo. until now.
I must admit it. This company’s taste for architecture can be compared to none I’ve seen. The structure of the building that I had seen in those files and what I’m now seeing, confirms it without a doubt. The cool conditioned air and alluring scents filled my surroundings. It’s enchanting.
At the number ten, the elevator stopped and opened up. I walked out. I am appalled to see all the things before me. This office deserves a ‘wow’. I took off my shades and put them into my bag. A section of the floor is reserved for waiting with a row of chairs. Most of the walls I see happens to be made of solid glass making the rays of the morning sun have its required sparkle in the floor.
The different ornaments that adorned the floor made it very beautiful and luxurious. Nathan’s office is a bit far from where I’m standing but I held myself back from going near it. They’re probably security cameras everywhere.
Nathan can be here at any time and I don’t want him to meet me under awkward circumstances. I dropped my shoulder bag on a waiting chair and went to the balcony of the floor. Surprisingly, it has one. The glassy walls extend here preventing me from feeling the wind from outside but even at that, the view from a high point like this of the city is remarkable.
Sam stayed there enjoying the view as she awaited Nathan. It didn’t take long before the elevator made a ring and Nathaniel Kress walked out.
“Like seriously, you make me wonder the use of the waiting chairs if people like you aren’t going to use them.” Nathan said making me turn around immediately to meet him right behind me with crossed arms.
I am too deep in shock to say anything. I am standing face-to-face with Nathan Kress. It’s breathtaking. The photographs of him are nothing close to how handsome looking he is in person.
“Are you going to keep standing here looking stupid or are you going to say something?” he said pulling me out of my thoughts with his hands still crossed.
Did he just call me stupid?
“I’m…”
“I know who you are!” Nathan shot interrupting me with a firm tone.
Didn’t he tell me a second ago to say something? Why then won’t he let me? I was just going to introduce myself. I gave him a rough glance and met his blue orbs looking straight into mine.
“… I am Samantha Downs.” I said trying to remedy the already awkward situation as I stretched out my right hand for a handshake.
“I don’t shake.” Nathan said walking closer which made me walk backwards eyes still on his trying to decode him. “At least not everyone especially ladies I haven’t met before.”
Why is he so rude? I would’ve known this was going to happen had I read the MS-word file on Nathan’s personality till the end. I am no good at relating with arrogant people. I can't stand them so just hope Nathan isn’t one of them.
“Don’t forget the reason why you’re here. For an interview and not to shake hands.” he added before he turned in swift steps. “Come with me!”
“Should I…”
“Just fucking come!” Nathan cut me off for the second time as he walked towards his office.
He walked in and I behind him.
“Have a seat or if you like, you can keep standing since you clearly don’t fancy sitting around.” he added reaching for his big armchair and sat down.
Without saying anything else, I followed him to his table and took a seat. I looked at him and found him staring at me with a grin on his handsome face. If only he knew my actual purpose for wanting to get this job. He wouldn’t have me seated in the same room with him. If only he knew I was sent by a Mafia Lord.
I stared back.
From what I have observed, Nathan Kress must be an arrogant brat who thinks so little of others. He is blinded by his wealth as well as his influential power that he thinks me and everyone just like me, beneath him.
“Can I talk or are you going to keep on cutting me off every single time?” I dashed breaking the silence. “If you like, we can also continue the staring contest.”
Nathan smiled bashfully. He stood up and looked at me with suspicious eyes for a few seconds before his lips went in motion.
“You’re hired! Just don’t steal from me or you’ll rot it out in jail. I assure you!” Nathan said in a tone meant to make me feel terrified but I’m not.
I am just really really stunned. Was that it? The whole staring contest was the interview?
“Sir, are you being serious?” I asked looking so confused.
“Don’t tell me you’re part-time deaf? Or are you just trying to get on my nerves?” Nathan said using a finger to run over his forehead.
“I’ll take that as a ‘yes’” I claimed standing up.
Nathan is a lot taller than I am so even when I stood, his look on me is still frightening but in a charismatic sort of way.
“Sir, I can’t promise you that I won’t steal anything from you. Basically, all I intend to steal is one thing,” Sam said with a cunning smile at one end of her mouth. “Your heart. It’s the only thing that seems to interest me.”
Did I really just tell him that?
“It can be yours. All you have to do is find it first.” Nathan said coming out from his seat towards me until he was inches away from my face. “Get me a cup of coffee.”
“Excuse me?”
“Get! Me! A! Cup! Of! Coffee!” “Which word can’t you hear? The cup or the coffee?” he askeed leaning closer reducing the space separating us both.
I understood what he said but for some reason, my body refuses to act. Nathan leaned in my ear and the next thing triggered my anger.
“Now!!” Nathan said forcefully making me give out a shriek.
“Okay! You don’t have to yell about it.” I said to him before I walked to the elevator.
I really shouldn’t have just said that to him. After all, he’s now my boss. As I walked, I missed a step and found myself falling to the ground. I don’t know why but I thought Nathan was going to stop me from reaching the ground but he didn’t. He just stood there and watched me fall to the ground.
“Do you mind? I could’ve been seriously hurt.” I said getting up by myself from the ground.
“And that concerns me how? Try to be more careful when walking with heels. Don’t make a big deal over something that isn’t. Remember, I can always fire you and hire someone else as it pleases me.” Nathan said still standing obviously watching me get myself up and laughing within himself. “I’m waiting?!?”
“Sir, thanks for giving me this job. I won’t let you regret it starting from now on.” I said putting myself in order before I made it for the elevator and it opened.
“What makes you so sure?”
“For starters, I know exactly what you would like to drink, eat and have for every hour of the day in this office and for seconds, I’m not alone.” I said as the elevator door closed and descended towards the reception.
“We’ll see about that. Keep up with this attitude and I’ll fire you before the day runs out. It’s a promise.” Nathan said watching the doors of the elevator close. “At least she seems good enough for the job judging by her looks and her somewhat annoying attitude. There’s something about her that made me give her the job just by looking into her eyes but I can’t quite put my finger on it.” Nathan added walking back to his chair.
He had his seat and brought out some folders containing files from a nearby file cabinet.
“Ulric is definitely not going to like this.”

Chapter 8Samantha Downs ~The elevator opened and I walked out trying not to look so irritated by what just happened. All my life, I never once had the intent of being a secretary even if it was going to be for a wealthy CEO. Now I have the job of one.Well, on the bright side, that’s the first step in getting close enough to steal his heart. The fact that his arrogance is super annoying and discouraging at the same time makes it hard for me to say and do things that would mean to please him.“Sam, right?” a voice asked bringing me back to reality.I turned to meet the hazel brown eyes of the receptionist looking at me with a file resting on her arm. She is by her looks very friendly.Mira is about four and a half feet tall in height. She’s probably a few years older than I am. Unlike me, I won’t say she’s really curvy, more of petite. She had her brown hair down in curls. The blue blouse sh
Chapter 9Samantha Downs ~That man is right. If I keep this up, Nathan would fire me sooner than later.“What are you doing?” Mira asked snatching the cup from me.“I’m just putting in some cubes to make it cooler. This is going to be too hot for him to drink.” I said in defense.“Thank your stars that you now have a friend like me to help you with getting along with this job. I’ve been the receptionist of this company for about three years and if there’s one thing I’m sure of, is that the boss’ coffee should under no circumstance be warm not to mention having cubes in it.”“For some reason, he likes his coffee boiling hot!” Mira said as she pulled out another cup and got a new batch of coffee.“Give me that.” She took the coffee from my hand. “Give him this.”I observed how she prepared Nathan’s coffee and I must say, i
Chapter 10Samantha Downs ~Right now, I wish Nathan would get up and do something.Anything.Just to say something that would make this friend of his put down the gun and give up asking questions I can't answer in truth."I'm not okay?! I wasn't set by anyone! I saw the advert online and decided to apply for the job." "I swear!" I lied with my eyes closed when I felt my back against the wall. "Please, don't shoot me.""Have it your way!" he said and the next sound I heard was the sound of the trigger being pulled. The man pulled the trigger and I braced myself for the inevitable. I am certain he did but how am I still okay? I opened my eyes and saw the man smiling with the gun now down."Don't be scared, it isn't even loaded." the man said to me with crossed arms. "I can't say she's telling the truth Nate but for now, I'll be watching up close." the man said turning to Nathan."Did you really think that I was going to s
Chapter 11Samantha Downs ~"I'll be on my way." I said walking towards the elevator and leaving the signed document there on the table."Don't forget your... thing." Nathan added pointing at my shoulder bag.How dare he call my bag a 'thing'? Basically, yes, it's actually a thing but the way he said it, he said it in an insultive kinda way. I walked back to where I left the bag and hung it over my shoulder."Thank you!" I said looking straight into his eyes before I turned and walked back to the elevator.I looked back at Ulric, he was still holding the gun in one hand. It's definitely going to take some time before I will get used to seeing him as a friend and not as a bad guy. Who knows, he may be to Nathan as those guys are to Jaden."I walked into the elevator and set it for the first floor. A notification message came in on my phone. I know that it is going to be a text from no one other than Jaden. The elevator started moving.
Chapter 12Samantha Downs ~"If the company has a new investor client to partner with, no one else can sign the business partnership but he so he has to be here to do what needs to be done." "If he senses something is out of place somewhere and calls for a meeting with his board of directors, don't worry you'll get to meet them soon enough, he'll have to be persent personally. Most times those meetings get adjourned for almost two consecutive weeks after every one. Don't ask me how I know""Soon enough, you'll be familiar with the boss' life stlye." Mira whispered forming a smile."Okay so what are the files for? You mentioned they're now mine?""This is just the tip of the iceberg compared to all the paperwork you'll be handling as the new secretary.""Oh. I almost forgot, being the secretary of one of the most wealthy, powerful and influential men in America also comes with a lot of paperwork and official appearances besides the fat pay, t
Chapter 13Nathaniel Kress ~(Some hours after Samantha left to go see Mira)"Okay Nate, We having been playing this game for 5 goddamn hours. Let's talk! I can't keep on pretending like I'm okay with what you did because I'm fucking not." Ulric said putting down the game pad.Awkward right? Nathan has a Play Station 5 in his office."Can you tell me why the fuck you let her sign that contract? Or rather, let's begin from why you thought of hiring her in the first place even after I assured you that I can and will get you a trusty lady for the job." Ulric complained adjusting himself on the chair and turning his gaze to me.My newly hired secretary left a few hours ago to begin the first phase of her job - knowing what it takes, for starters. Ever since they met, I could see the uneasiness in Ulric's eyes over the fact that I went ahead with my intentions to hire someone to work as my secretary instead of waiting for him to get
Chapter 14Nathaniel Kress ~I got out and signalled my driver to bring me my car. I looked around me and discovered that Sam is nowhere here. I walked back in."Are you going to keep standing there all stupid or are you going to get over here? Don't tell me that you're part time deaf?" I shot out with an angered tone."I'm on my way. Jeez, you don't have to be so rude and shitty about it." I heard her reply walking towards me with confidence like she had no idea who she is talking to in that manner. "And no! I'm not part time deaf." she added making a halt after she had passed me with the files still in her arms.Am I dreaming or is this real? That someone actually had the guts to say all those things to me? Does she know who she's talking to in that manner? I'm sure she doesn't. If she did, she wouldn't dare. I stopped her by holding her by the arm."Something wrong?" she requested with her head slightly cocked and an arched
Chapter 15Nathaniel Kress ~"Do you really want this job?" I asked her sounding as serious as I can."If I didn't I won't have signed the contract even after your best-friend pointed a gun to my head. Believe me, I really do." Sam said in a less rude manner."Do you think you have what it takes to be the secretary of Nathaniel Kress?" I asked this time putting my arms behind my back walking closer."Do you think I don't??" she asked me back adjusting a couple strands of her hair in place behind her ear."That's the problem I'm having with you Sam. I'm trying my best to be as nice as I can every fucking time you open your fucking mouth to fucking talk to me. Today's not even your first day and you're already letting me down." I said slowly walking away from her."Wait, in my defense, boss, I've never been so close to someone who happens to be so full of himself and says whatever he wants to people not caring how it makes them feel." I
