Chapter 382

Penulis: Cloud Drop
“Enough! I’m talking to my son!” Lillian snapped, clearly irritated as her attention swung back to the call. “What is it?”

“Mom, it’s not that I’m ignoring you. We came to the Duncan house first because Old Mr. and Mrs. Duncan are both still here. Out of respect, it’s only right we visit them first,” Mark explained patiently.

“Well, now you’ve said your hellos, so come home for dinner,” Lillian shot back. “I went to the supermarket and bought all kinds of ingredients when I heard you were coming back. I’ve been cooking all afternoon. And now you tell me you’re not coming? What am I supposed to do with all that food?”

“Mom, I told you earlier we’d come to the Duncans first, have a meal with them, and then head home. You’re the one who—” Mark trailed off, realizing it was pointless.

“I’m the one who what?” Lillian’s voice rose sharply. “Is it so wrong for a mother to want her son and daughter-in-law to come home for a meal?”

Then came the familiar sound of sniffling on the other end

Only when Melvin came over did Mark finally let go of Aria’s hand.Melvin’s big, dark eyes darted around cleverly, making his slightly round face look even more endearing.“Aria, Mark, what are you doing out here?” he asked with pure curiosity.“Lunch is ready. I came out to look for you,” Aria said gently. Inside, though, her mind was still spinning from what Mark had said. She was trying hard to shake off the weight of his words, but her thoughts were a mess. She hated to admit it, but what he said made her waver. She knew she could be a little blinded by love. She’d given so much of herself to Larry before. And now, meeting someone like Archer—someone who treated her well—she had thrown herself in completely. She dared to, because before their marriage, Archer had given her security: he’d transferred assets to her voluntarily and hadn’t even asked for a prenup.Archer was the heir of the Duncan family. And her? She was a fallen socialite, a once-proud daughter of the Jackso

“Don’t doubt my intentions. I’d never do anything to hurt you.” As he spoke, his hand slowly slid up her arm until his fingers brushed her collarbone—and kept going.Aria’s eyes widened in shock. The place he touched made her skin crawl.“How dare you! Let go of me!” Aria shoved his hand away, but he immediately grabbed her waist with the other and tried to pull her against him.“Mar—” Before he could say more than her name, a young voice suddenly called out from not far behind.“Aria? Mark? What are you two doing here?”It was Melvin. Aria’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t want him to misunderstand. Looking past Mark’s shoulder, she saw Melvin holding a yellow toy shovel in one hand and a red plastic bucket in the other as he walked toward them.“Let go of me!” she repeated, grabbing his wrist and trying to pry his hand off her waist.Mark didn’t budge. His grip tightened as he leaned in and whispered, “I may not have proof yet, but I swear I’m not wrong about Archer. I know h

“You don’t even know him!” Mark’s voice rose slightly, frustration creeping in. “You’ve barely been together—how can you be sure you really know everything about him? Have you ever thought that maybe the version of him you see isn’t the real one?”“You don’t know anything,” he added, glancing around and lowering his voice. “Aria, I’m certain Archer’s hiding something from you. Something serious—something that could really hurt you.”Aria let out a cold, mocking laugh. “If you’re so sure, then tell me. What exactly did he do that was so unforgivable? Show me the proof.”Mark’s lips tightened. He hesitated, then muttered, “I don’t have evidence yet. But I will find it. Just… promise me you won’t give him your full trust until I do. Don’t give him everything. I don’t want to see you get crushed later when the truth comes out.”Aria finally laughed outright—sharp and biting. “Let’s just pretend for a moment that you’re telling the truth. And I’m supposed to wait for you to ‘find out’?

“I need to talk to you,” Mark said, glancing toward the house. They were too close to the floor-to-ceiling windows—anyone inside could easily see them. “It’s important.”Without waiting for her response, he grabbed Aria’s wrist and pulled her toward a tree in the far corner of the yard. No matter how she struggled, he refused to let go.“Mark, you’re crossing the line. Let go,” Aria said sharply, her voice low but firm. “I suggest you let go now, or I’ll start yelling. You might not care, but I really don’t want anyone seeing us like this. It would look bad. I’ll be fine—Archer trusts me. But can you say the same for Fifi?”Compared to her, Mark had far more to lose from a misunderstanding. But to her surprise, he didn’t seem worried at all this time. He dragged her all the way under the tree, determined.Aria was forced back against the trunk. Mark didn’t stand too close, but he still boxed her in between himself and the tree, giving her no space to leave. She tried to shake him

Aria couldn’t say a word. She just leaned into Archer’s chest and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck—just like how he’d always held her so tightly.Archer lowered his head into the crook of her neck, breathing in the scent of her hair. He kept planting soft, scattered kisses on the delicate skin there, his lips brushing through the strands as he moved.Neither of them knew how long they stayed like that, wrapped up in each other, until a polite little cough broke the silence from the far end of the hallway.“Ahem!”It was Marianne’s voice.Aria wasn’t scared, but she was absolutely mortified. Her face flushed a deep red, and she quickly pulled away from Archer’s arms.Archer, on the other hand, looked completely unbothered—as calm and composed as ever. His strong arm stayed looped around her waist, not letting her step too far away.“I was just looking for Melvin,” Marianne said from the end of the corridor, standing where she was without coming any closer. “It’s almost ti
