Evelyn’s POV

The afternoon sun streamed through the large windows of my living room, highlighting the perfectly arranged furniture and fresh flowers on the coffee table. Everything looked immaculate, just like my life was supposed to be. I sat on the couch with a cup of tea gone cold, replaying the image of Claire slipping out the side exit of the country club last night. I had followed my instincts and driven there after she left brunch early. What I saw only deepened the knot in my stomach. Marcus had been distant again this morning, leaving for “work” with little more than a quick kiss on my cheek. No repeat of yesterday’s heated kitchen encounter. Just polite distance. The kind that had become our normal.

I picked up my phone and scrolled through old photos—happy family pictures from vacations, holidays, the three of us sisters smiling together. Lila looked so young and carefree in them. Yesterday at brunch, she had mentioned a new boyfriend. Something about the way she said it felt off, like she was testing the waters but holding back a flood.

A soft knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts. Claire stood on the porch when I opened it, looking slightly unkempt in jeans and a loose blouse, her hair pulled back messily.

“Hey, I was in the neighborhood,” she said, offering a small smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Thought we could talk. Just us.”

I stepped aside to let her in, my pulse quickening.

      “Of course. Is everything okay?”

We settled in the living room. Claire fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, avoiding my gaze at first.

“I’ve been thinking about what you asked at Mom’s. About me and Marcus. There’s nothing going on, Evelyn. I swear.”

Her words came out too quickly. Too rehearsed. I studied her face—the same eyes we all shared, but hers held shadows I couldn’t quite read.

“Then why do I keep feeling like I’m missing something?” I asked quietly. “The way you two look at each other sometimes. The way you disappeared at the party. And last night… I saw you leaving the club.”

Claire’s face paled. She opened her mouth, then closed it again. For a second, I thought she might confess something. Instead, she reached over and took my hand.

“You’re under a lot of stress with work and everything. Marcus loves you. We all do. Don’t let paranoia ruin that.”

Her touch was warm, sisterly. But it felt tainted somehow. I wanted to believe her. I needed to believe her. Yet the anonymous message, the cologne on her skin at the party, the way Marcus had fucked me so urgently yesterday like he was proving a point—it all swirled together into a storm I couldn’t ignore. We talked for nearly an hour about safe topics—Mom’s garden, Lila’s mysterious new boyfriend, upcoming family dinners. Claire laughed at the right moments, but her eyes kept drifting to the family photos on the mantel, lingering on one of the three of us as teenagers. Before she left, she hugged me tightly.

“We’re sisters. We stick together no matter what, right?”

“Right,” I whispered back, but the word felt hollow.

After she drove away, I went upstairs to our bedroom and opened Marcus’s nightstand drawer. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for—receipts, notes, anything. My fingers brushed against an old hotel key card from months ago. The date matched a weekend he said he was on a business trip. My chest tightened. I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the key card until my vision blurred. Was I losing my mind, or was my perfect marriage—and my perfect family—slowly disintegrating right in front of me?

Later that evening, Marcus came home carrying takeout. He set the bags on the table and pulled me into a kiss that lingered longer than usual.

     “Missed you today,” he murmured.

I kissed him back, searching for the passion we once had. But even as his hands roamed down my body, lifting my dress, all I could think about was Claire’s face when I mentioned the club. We made love that night—slow and intense on our bed. He moved inside me with deep, possessive strokes, whispering how much he needed me. I came with his name on my lips, but the pleasure felt hollow, overshadowed by doubt. As he fell asleep beside me, I lay awake staring at the ceiling. Across town, Lila was probably with her new boyfriend, and Claire… I didn’t even want to imagine where Claire was or who she was with. The threads holding us together were cutting faster than I could mend them. And I was terrified of what would happen when they finally snapped.

  • Secrets Between Sisters   Chapter fifteen

Claire’s POVThe drive home from Evelyn’s house felt longer than usual. Streetlights passed in steady orange blurs through my car windows as I gripped the steering wheel with both hands. The inside of the car still carried the faint scent of the red wine I had brought and the leftover herbs from Evelyn’s perfect dinner. My stomach felt heavy—not from the food, but from the weight of every smile I had forced across the table.I pulled into my apartment parking lot and sat in the car for several minutes after turning off the engine. The dashboard clock glowed 10:47 PM. My body felt exhausted, but my mind was wide awake, replaying every moment from the dinner. Evelyn’s warm but searching eyes. Lila’s careful answers about her “new boyfriend.” The way the three of us had laughed together like nothing was wrong, while secrets sat thick between us like smoke. I finally got out of the car, the cool night air brushing against my skin. My heels clicked softly on the pavement as I walked to my

Evelyn’s POVThe aroma of roasted garlic chicken and fresh herbs filled my kitchen as I pulled the casserole dish from the oven. Golden light from the pendant lamps above the island bathed the granite countertops in a warm glow. I had spent the afternoon preparing everything carefully—mashed potatoes with a hint of truffle oil, crisp green beans almondine, and a fresh salad with strawberries and goat cheese. A bottle of chilled white wine sat breathing on the counter next to three elegant glasses. I wanted tonight to feel normal. Warm. Like the sister dinners we used to have before everything started feeling… off. I wiped my hands on my apron and glanced at the clock. 6:45 PM. They would arrive soon. I had changed into a soft cream blouse and tailored black pants, hair falling in loose waves around my shoulders. Simple but put-together. The perfect hostess, as always. The doorbell rang at exactly seven. I smoothed my blouse and opened the door with a bright smile. Claire stood on the

  • Secrets Between Sisters   Chapter thirteen

Lila’s POVThe soft glow of my bedside lamp cast a warm, golden light across my small bedroom. Clothes were scattered on the floor—my sundress from earlier, a lace bra hanging off the chair, and the black heels I had worn to the club two nights ago. I sat cross-legged on my unmade bed, wearing only an oversized t-shirt, slowly brushing out my damp hair after a long shower. The scent of my coconut shampoo lingered in the air, mixing with the faint vanilla candle I had lit on the nightstand. My body still hummed from the night before. Marcus. The way he had looked at me when he said my real name. The deep, possessive way he moved inside me. I could still feel the ghost of his hands on my hips, the stretch of him filling me completely, the heat of his release. I shivered and pulled the brush through my hair a little harder, trying to focus on the present.Tomorrow night’s dinner at Evelyn’s house loomed over me like a storm cloud. Just the three of us sisters. No parents. No Marcus—at le

  • Secrets Between Sisters   Chapter twelve

Claire’s POVThe late morning sunlight poured through the half-open blinds of my apartment bedroom, casting striped shadows across the rumpled white sheets. I lay on my back, staring at the ceiling fan spinning lazily above me, its soft hum the only sound in the room. My body felt heavy in the best and worst ways—muscles pleasantly sore, skin still slightly sticky from sweat and Marcus. He had left only twenty minutes ago, slipping out the door with one last deep kiss and a whispered promise to see me soon.I turned onto my side, pulling the sheet up over my bare breasts. The fabric felt cool against my heated skin. My thighs pressed together, and I could still feel the faint ache where he had been so deep inside me earlier. The memory made heat bloom low in my belly again. We hadn’t planned to meet this morning. But after the conversation with Lila at the café yesterday, I needed him. Needed to feel something real. He arrived quickly, and the moment the door closed behind him, clothe

  • Secrets Between Sisters   Chapter eleven

Evelyn’s POVThe late afternoon light slanted through the tall windows of my living room, painting long golden rectangles across the hardwood floors. I stood at the kitchen island, slowly chopping vegetables for dinner with rhythmic thuds of the knife against the cutting board. The scent of fresh basil and garlic filled the air from the pan simmering on the stove. Everything in the house looked picture-perfect—the fresh flowers on the dining table, the neatly arranged throw pillows on the sofa, the soft classical music playing from the speakers. But inside my chest, a constant, low hum of unease refused to settle.Marcus had texted earlier saying he would be home late from “meetings.” Again. I set the knife down and wiped my hands on a dish towel, staring at my reflection in the dark window above the sink. My face looked composed, as always—elegant makeup, hair swept into a loose bun—but my eyes betrayed the exhaustion and doubt that had been growing for days. The memory of Claire lea

  • Secrets Between Sisters   Chapter ten

Lila’s POVThe small café near the park smelled like fresh espresso and warm vanilla pastries. Sunlight filtered through the large front windows, casting golden patches across the wooden tables and polished floors. I arrived early, choosing a quiet corner booth tucked away from the main walkway. The leather seat creaked softly as I slid in, and I set my bag beside me before wrapping my hands around the warm latte the waitress had brought. The spoon clinked gently against the ceramic mug as I stirred in sugar, watching the foam swirl slowly. My mind kept drifting back to last night. Marcus. Evelyn’s husband. The way his hands had gripped my hips in that private suite, the deep, commanding way he had moved inside me, filling me completely. Even now, hours later, I could feel a faint ache between my thighs with every small shift. My body remembered him even as my brain screamed that this was dangerous territory. I took a slow sip of the hot drink, letting the bitterness ground me. The c
