“How's she doing, doctor?” the man in the tailored black suit asked.

The top two buttons of his white shirt were undone, with his sleeves rolled up once, exposing a silver watch with a cracked surface.

“Physically, she is fine. No fractures so that's a good sign.

But, she seems to be in shock and she has some marks on her body.”

“Shock?”

“Yes. You never really told me if she's your family.”

“I told you, it's complicated.”

“I'd like to speak with her family.”

“I don't have access to her family at the moment. You can speak to me.”

“Alright. The thing is, she is physically fine but mentally absent. We can't tell what exactly the cause is so we'd need to speak to her family.”

“But if that won't be possible”, he continued, “then we'd have to file a police report.”

“That won't be necessary. I'll take care of her until I get in touch with her family.”

“Alright, Mr. Elbane.”

“Can I at least see her?”

“Yes you can. I can't tell if she's awake now. But don't say anything to trigger her.”

Daisy was asleep when he walked in.

He heaved a sigh of relief upon seeing her.

She looked so fragile and weak with the machines beeping beside her bed.

As weak as she was when he accidentally knocked her down.

He wasn't quite sure what to say to her if she regained consciousness.

But first things first, he wanted to know what left her in shock and why she had nail marks on her arm.

He took out his phone from his pocket and dialed a number.

It rang once.

Then a rather raspy voice came through the other end.

“Hello boss”

“I'm sending you a picture, gather every possible info and update me ASAP!”

“Yes sir.”

He hung up and stared at Daisy.

His eyes watered but he wiped them off before a single tear could fall.

Then the nurse entered.

“Please step outside sir. It's time to give her a shot.”

He nodded and did as she instructed.

His expression was unreadable as he paced around for a bit.

Then his eye caught his watch. He tightened his jaw to prevent any emotion from seeping through.

“All good?” he asked the nurse after she came out.

“Yes sir but she's still asleep.”

“Okay. I'll be stepping out for a while. But I'll be back soon.”

“Okay sir”, the nurse replied with her tray in hand.

He stepped out from the hospital and walked over to his car.

Before he drove off, two men approached him.

“You're late!” he said, trying to keep his cool.

“Sorry sir”, one of the men in black said.

“You have her picture and room number right?”

“Yes boss”, they replied.

“You can go”, he said, waving them off with two fingers.

He watched them go into the hospital before zooming off.

At the Miller mansion, Josephine was making preparations for Lucas' wedding.

“The bride wants a blend of pink and white as the thematic colours.”

“And what about the groom?” The event planner asked, scribbling away in her notepad.

“He's down for anything so we'll stick to pink and white.”

“And how many guests are we looking at?”

“Roughly fifteen to thirty guests.”

“Oh…that's uhm–”

“Small?” Josephine quizzed.

“Yes. I thought it was going to be a grand wedding. Considering Mr. Miller's status.”

Josephine touched her thin gold hoops as she spoke,

“It's an intimate wedding. No press coverage and no journalists.”

“Noted. What about food? Do you have any specifics?”

“Not exactly. You can make the picks and present them for tasting.”

The event planner was about to ask another question when Nina walked in.

“That would be all for today”, Josephine said.

When the event planner left, Nina sat, and she looked like something was on her mind.

“What's the matter?”

“I'm a bit concerned about a couple of things”, she replied in a low tone.

“Like..?”

“My wedding with Lucas. Why can't I be actively involved in the preparations?”

“Oh my dear”, Josephine scooped her hands gently, “You're pregnant. Not just with any baby but the Miller heir.

I don't want you stressed.”

“I understand.”

She looked away for a while before drawing her hands out of Josephine's.

“What about Lucas' ex wife?”

“What about her?” Josephine asked.

“I hope she won't come between Lucas and I.”

Josephine looked at her and then burst out laughing.

“Are you jealous?”

“No. I'm just…asking.”

“Some thoughts should never cross your mind. Daisy's been out of our lives for over three days and it's going to remain that way forever”, she said trying to convince Nina.

But Nina's expression was still that of uncertainty.

“Cheer up. As I said, your main focus should be taking care of yourself and my heir.”

Back at the hospital, Daisy had opened her eyes.

One of the men deployed by Mr. Elbane to watch over Daisy was standing at the foot of the hospital bed and the other was stationed outside her room.

She looked at him but did not say a word.

“You're awake”, the doctor said when he came in to check on her.

But she barely blinked.

“You may be wondering what's going on.”

She blinked twice.

“Well, these men have been stationed here by the man who brought you here. He says he's an old friend.”

Daisy turned her head slightly in confusion as she stared at the doctor.

“Don't stress yourself”, he added.

“He'll be back again to check up on you.”

She blinked again and lay down on the bed, with her back facing the door.

In no time, Mr. Elbane returned to the hospital.

“Ah, it's good you're here”, the doctor said to him upon sighting him walking up to Daisy's room.

“Were you able to get in touch with her family?” he asked.

“No. That won't be needed. I'm all she's got now.”

“Mm. If that's the case, I'll get the discharge papers ready then.”

“Good.”

He then walked into the room and ordered his man to step out.

Daisy lay in the same position as she was when the doctor had left.

Though, Mr. Elbane’s presence was strong, her mind was too far off to care.

He walked up to the bed and tapped her on the shoulders and she was startled.

“It's me, D…it's me”, he said, his voice deep while trying to calm her down.

“Marcus?” she teared up.

“Yes D”, he replied and pulled her into a tight embrace.

“Please leave me, mum”, Daisy cried in pain as Josephine's nails dug into her skin. But the older lady was not having any of it. Daisy looked at Lucas but he looked away. She kept crying, while trying to resist Josephine's force. “I don't want to sign them. I still love my husband. Please leave me.”“But I don't love you!” Lucas shot back. She stood frozen. “You heard me right. I don't love you! And I don't want this marriage. I married you because of that stupid bet I made but you couldn't produce a child for me.” “For five years”, he continued with anger in his eyes, “For five years, I've tolerated you. I've tried to accommodate your low style but what's it all for? You couldn't give me an heir. But I'm done with this!Nina is in my life now and I want to do right by her and my unborn baby. So just sign the papers and set me free.” Daisy sniffed, unable to process what Lucas had just said. She had always thought he married her out of love or he was just fond of her.Now she

Nina happened to be a rising model from Vancouver. She was elegant with impeccable taste and lots of brands desired to work with her. Perhaps, she was going to be the face of Miller Holdings. But Daisy was slightly wrong. “Meet Nina, mum.” They exchanged an air kiss. “And who's she?” Nina asked, pointing to Daisy. “She's…uhm…my wife”, Lucas struggled to say. “Oh”, Nina smiled, scanning Daisy from head to toe.“I've heard a lot about you.” “Me too. I've seen you on many billboards”, Daisy beamed from ear to ear. “You're really pretty.” “Thanks”, Nina said, feeling flattered. “You can go upstairs”, Lucas said to Daisy after noticing she was gawking. He personally served his guest a drink which was rare. There were giggles and the conversation spun for a while. It wasn't until quite some time had passed that Daisy noticed her phone was not in her bedroom.‘I must have dropped it in the conservatory’, she said to herself and quickly went there. But it wasn't there…‘Maybe it

“I'm sure you already know what that means right?” “Speak to Peter about it”, Josephine said.“We both know Peter doesn't have enough funds. His brother has access to loads of it and my son has almost…nothing.” “That's not Lucas’ fault”, Josephine said. “It is”, Mandy snapped back.“Lucas does not want to share the property with his brother. And what's the excuse? That he's going to get an heir who will manage everything.” “And he will”, Josephine said, trying to suppress her fury. “When will he get an heir? It's been over four years of marriage. The least he can do is to split the property into half with his brother…or better still, let his brother have it all.” “Never!”.At this point, Josephine was clearly furious. Daisy knew what that meant for her. She was always at the receiving end of Josephine's wrath. Her stomach turned and twisted as she sat with her head lowered to the ground out of shame. Just then, Josephine's phone rang. She stepped aside to answer the call an

“What did the test results say?” the older lady in the room asked, impatient. She had been pacing around for over ten minutes. “It's…it's…negative.” “What?!” Fury etched all over her expression when she landed a slap on the younger lady's face. “It's been four years and two months and you still keep saying the same thing.” “Let it be, mum” the guy in a navy blue shirt said as he walked over to console his mother who had rage in her eyes. “Lucas, you married a log of wood. She's simply a plank!” she said as she sat down on her royal stool. Her son now turned to the younger lady who stood there with trembling hands. “Go to your room”, he said, waving her off with his hand. She ran out of the living room and the minute she got to the bedroom, she dropped on her knees and sobbed bitterly. This was the seventh pregnancy test she had taken since the year began and on all seven occasions, she received a slap or two upon announcing the negative results. Even worse, she would be so
