Chapter 4

Penulis: Serein M
The days without Corbin flew by. Before I knew it, I only had two days left.

Even though we hadn't spoken, Maya kept me updated on his and Liana's drama.

"They had a fight," Maya said through a mouthful of toast. "Nearly woke up the whole building last night."

I didn't look up from packing my last few things. One more day, and I would be free.

"About what?" I asked absently.

"You," Maya said, raising an eyebrow. "Liana demanded to know why he was still contacting you. Corbin said something like, 'She's my Luna,' and Liana lost it."

A ridiculous, sharp pain stabbed through my chest. I paused. “He called me his Luna?”

He finally remembered?

After pushing me away, after he needed to soothe another woman, he finally remembered what that title meant.

"Yep," Maya shrugged. "Then Liana started crying, asking 'What does that make me?' and Corbin started cooing, saying it was just a 'temporary arrangement'..."

I sneered.

A temporary arrangement.

Our three years, our seven bonds... all just a "temporary arrangement" to him.

My phone rang. Corbin.

I rejected the call.

Five minutes later, it rang again. Him again.

Rejected.

He called seventeen times that day. I didn't answer a single one.

That evening, he called again.

"Astrid, please pick up," his voicemail was tired. "Tomorrow is our anniversary."

I stared at the screen.

It dawned on me that it was also the anniversary of our fourth re-bonding ceremony.

Rejected and accepted so many times. Only I would bother to remember every single date related to him.

I didn't know if that was pathetic or just sad.

I finally answered.

"Astrid?" Corbin’s voice was heavy with relief. "You finally picked up."

"What."

"Tomorrow night. Moon Lake," his voice was uncharacteristically gentle. "Just like our first date. Just the two of us."

I was silent for a long time.

"Astrid?"

"Fine," I said.

Why did I agree? I don't know. Maybe I wanted to give this disaster a proper ending.

Moon Lake was quiet at night.

I wore a white dress, just like three years ago. I sat on the same rock by the shore, and I waited.

At eight, he wasn't there. He's held up with pack business, I thought.

At nine, still no sign of him. Maybe he just forgot.

By nine-thirty, my heart was a dead thing in my chest. But my body stubbornly stayed, a monument to a love that was already gone.

Then my phone buzzed. A text.

"Liana went into a sudden heat. Her wolf is out of control. Taking her back to my place to lock her down before she hurts someone. Sorry. I'll make it up to you. Tomorrow. -K"

I stared at the text, my eyes empty. I didn't even have the energy to laugh.

What was I still expecting? Why couldn't I just admit defeat...

The lake wind was cold, whipping my dress around me.

I sat there for an hour and a half like a fool.

I closed the message and, for the first time in a month, I opened my social media.

The first post on my feed was from Liana. Posted three minutes ago.

A picture. Her and Corbin, wrapped in each other's arms in front of his floor-to-ceiling windows.

The city lights of the North twinkled behind them like a sea of stars.

Her head on his shoulder, his arm around her waist.

They were both looking out the window, at the same stars I could see from the lake.

The caption read: "Some views are meant to be shared with the right person."

Posted: Three minutes ago.

So while I was sitting here like an idiot, they were in his penthouse, looking at the same damn stars.

Heat? Wolf out of control? Needing to be soothed?

I looked at Liana's smug smile in the photo and suddenly, everything was hilarious.

The irony was so thick I could choke on it.

No. I wouldn't cry. I was done crying for this man.

I stood up, brushed the dirt from my dress, and dragged my suitcase to my car.

But I didn't go back to my place. I drove straight to the airport.

I spent the night in a 24-hour café. Drank seven cups of coffee. Watched the news for three hours.

At 7 AM, I checked in for my flight and deleted Corbin's contact info.

At 8 AM, standing in the boarding line, I blocked his number.

At 9 AM, I was on the plane. The flight attendant told us to turn off our phones.

Just then, a call from Maya came through.

"Astrid!" she yelled, her voice frantic. "Where are you? Corbin is going crazy looking for you!"

And through Maya's frantic shouts, I heard his roar.

"Astrid, where are you?!"

My phone was about to die, but just before it did, I heard Maya's frantic call, and through it, Corbin's possessive, furious roar from the background: "ASTRID, WHERE ARE YOU?!"

Astrid's POVOn the Stormclaw Pack's private beach, moonlight spilled across the sand like a silver carpet.Tonight, I would become Rhys's true mate."Everything's ready." Maya adjusted my gown. "You look stunning."I looked at myself in the mirror. My white dress trailed behind me, the moonstone necklace sparkling at my chest. This was how I was supposed to look. Not like a woman begging for scraps of affection, but a Luna worthy of being cherished."By the way," Maya's expression grew complicated. "There's something I have to tell you.""What is it?""Corbin's here."My hand paused, a pearl earring halfway to my ear. "Here?""He's been kneeling at the edge of the wards since sunset yesterday," Maya said, her voice heavy. "He refuses to move. There was a storm last night. He just… knelt through it all."I put the earring down. "What does he want?""I don't know. But he's been clutching something in his hand." Maya frowned. "Looks like a pendant."A pendant? The memory hit me. A cheap

Astrid's POVCorbin found me at a lakeside café in the Southern Packs. I was meeting with Rhys, the Alpha of the Stormclaw Pack.Inside the glass conservatory, Rhys's fingers gently brushed the back of my hand. For three years, this Alpha, known to the world as the "Stormclaw," had shown this quiet patience to me and me alone."I've known you for three years and four months."He suddenly pulled a black velvet box from his suit pocket."I've decided to stop counting the days."The moment the box opened, it was as if all the sunlight in the conservatory focused on the pendant of the necklace inside.A moonstone the size of a robin's egg, circled by over twenty flawless diamonds, like stars around the moon."I sent my best warriors into the dwarven mountains for it last month."He took my hand and fastened the necklace around my neck."It suits you even more than I imagined."The same hand that had signed countless territorial treaties was now trembling slightly.Rhys's voice was careful.

Astrid's POVAs the plane touched down, I stared out the window at the unfamiliar city. It felt like a lifetime ago.I dragged my suitcase through the arrivals hall and saw a familiar figure.Six years. My father was still as tall as I remembered, but there was gray at his temples now.His golden eyes scanned the crowd. When they landed on me, they instantly filled with tears."Astrid."He opened his arms.I dropped my suitcase and ran to him."Dad..." My voice choked. "I'm home.""My little princess." He stroked my hair. "Welcome home."We both cried.Six years ago, I'd left the Silver Moon Pack to follow Corbin. My father had told me that if I ever had regrets, the gates of Silver Moon would always be open for me.I thought I would never need that promise.I was wrong. In the car, my father handed me a folder."A welcome home gift," he said with a smile.I opened it and froze.A transfer of 17% of the shares in Blackwood Group."Dad, this...""I know he hurt you," my father said, his

Corbin's POVI drove back on autopilot. I killed the engine. The world fell silent. Terrifyingly so.The only sound was my own harsh breathing inside the car.She was really gone.Astrid really left me.I stumbled toward the elevator, my finger trembling as I pressed the button for the top floor. The doors slid shut, trapping me with my reflection: hair wild, eyes bloodshot. A man who’d lost his soul. The elevator doors opened. And then I smelled it.White roses and sandalwood.Astrid’s scent. Her scent. The one blessed by the Moon Goddess herself. My heart hammered in my chest. She's back! She has to be back!I practically burst into the apartment, following the scent as I ran for the bedroom."Astrid!" I threw the door open. "You're back, I knew—"The words died in my throat. It wasn't Astrid on the bed.It was Liana. She was wearing my black silk robe, her long blonde hair draped over her shoulders. On the nightstand, Astrid's favorite white rose and sandalwood incense was burning.

"Goodbye, my Alpha."My voice was steady. I hung up. I powered the phone down. The plane started to move. The roar of the engines drowned out everything.I leaned back in my seat. I watched the lights of the North shrink in the distance. For the first time, I felt free.Like a bird caged for too long, finally flying free.————Back in Maya's house, Corbin stared at the dead phone in his hand. A wave of pure, unrestrained Alpha power slammed through the room, chilling the air to ice."She hung up on me." He looked at the black screen in disbelief. "She dared to hang up on me!"Maya scoffed. "And you're surprised?""Maya, where is Astrid?" Corbin's voice was a low, dangerous growl. "Tell me. Now.""I don't know.""Don't play dumb with me." His golden eyes flared. "I know you're her best friend."Maya met his glare without fear. "So what? You think she'd wait for you, like she always did?""We were supposed to complete the bond today!" Corbin roared. "She can't do this to me!""Were you?"
