Nerissa POV

I have to do something about that girl who thinks she can have everything she wants.

At least I can do it for Giselle.

The thought coiled through me, cold and satisfying, as I crossed the hallway toward the lockers. Students streamed past in both directions, a river of noise and shoulder-bumps, and somewhere in the middle of it stood Leslie — pulling books free, humming under her breath, utterly unaware. Utterly easy.

I slowed my steps. Watched her. Waited.

Then a blur of motion — s

Kael's POV"Are you alright, Leslie? You look shaken from what happened earlier." I braced my hands over hers as she sat quietly in the detention room, her spine too straight, her fingers too still — the kind of stillness that meant she was holding herself together by sheer will, one thread away from unraveling."No. I don't know why the Alpha hates me." Her voice cracked down the middle. "He's got the whole school thinking I'm some kind of villain, and I haven't even done anything." Tears welled along her lashes, trembling there, refusing to fall, like even her grief was afraid to be seen.Guilt hit me immediately, sharp and familiar, an old wound reopening in a place I thought had scarred over years ago. I'd carried this secret so long it had become part of the architecture of who I was — and now, watching her fall apart in front of me, I couldn't justify carrying it one more day."Leslie, I have to tell you something.""Why? What happened?" She sniffed, swiping at a tear before it

Leslie POV His gaze wouldn't let go of me. It pinned me in place the way a blade pins a moth to wood — not cruel, exactly, just final. My stomach dropped like I'd missed a step in the dark, and my pulse climbed so loud in my ears that Talia's hand found mine under the sleeve of my blazer and squeezed, a silent breathe. "Good day, sir," I managed, my voice thinner than I wanted it to be. Every head in the courtyard turned. I felt each stare land on me like a separate weight, pressing down until my shoulders wanted to curl inward, until I wanted to disappear into the stone beneath my feet. I swallowed — too hard, too visibly — and caught Giselle leaning toward Pearl, her lips moving fast against her mother's ear. Whatever she said pulled a smirk onto both their faces at once, twin and merciless, and then Pearl was walking toward me with the unhurried confidence of a woman who had never once been told no in her life. Giselle had been calling me Stacy since the very first day I set

Chapter 21: Leslie POV"Wait, why are you so frightened of the Alpha, Leslie?"Kael's question landed like a slap. I hadn't even realized I was shaking until he said it out loud — until I felt my own hands trembling at my sides, like they belonged to someone else. Someone who still remembered exactly what her father's voice sounded like when he was disappointed, and exactly what happened to the people who disappointed him."You know what, don't worry" I forced a smile onto my face, stretching it too wide, holding it a beat too long. Draken's eyes narrowed on me immediately. He always noticed. That was the problem with him — he never let anything slide, not even the things I needed him to."Are you hiding from him?" His voice came out low, cold, dangerously intimidating — the kind of voice that made the hallway around us go quiet without him even raising it above a murmur."Noooo." The word cracked out of me an octave too high, thin and squeaky, betraying every single thing I was tryin

Leslie POV"Leslie, wake up. Wake up!" I heard the panic threading through Risel's voice before I even opened my eyes."What is it," I mumbled, yawning like the whole world could wait on me."What the — did you just yawn?" Risel stood over my bed, worry carved into every line of her face, as I pushed myself up slowly. "Haven't you heard?"That was when the first flicker of dread crept in. "Heard what?""The Alpha of the Adrastea Pack is coming to the school. For a visit.""Wait." I was on my feet before I'd finished the sentence, sleep gone in an instant. "My dad is coming here?"I didn't wait for her answer. I was already moving, splashing cold water on my face, my hands not quite steady on the basin. The mirror caught my reflection for half a second — pale, wide-eyed, nothing like the girl who'd fallen asleep laughing the night before — and I looked away before I had to think about why.And the worst part of the day hadn't even started yet.By the time I stepped into the hallway, it

Leslie POV"So, Risel — Kael said something today about—""Wow. I care so much." Her voice cut across the room, sharp and glittering with sarcasm. "Tell me more."I sat up on my bed and crossed toward her, the floorboards cold under my bare feet. "Is everything alright?""Oh, let's see." She wasn't even looking at me now, her quill stabbing at the parchment on her lap hard enough that I heard the nib crack. "Risel, Kael did this. Risel, Draken did this. Risel, my black wolf did this." Each name landed like a slap, and I felt myself flinch at the last one even though she couldn't possibly know what it meant to me — not yet.I froze halfway across the room. "I don't — I still don't get it.""I bet you don't." The words came out clipped, and I felt the anger radiating off her before I saw it in her eyes. Her knuckles had gone white around the quill. "You know what? Forget it.""Risel, if something's bothering you, you can talk to me. You know that." I kept my voice gentle, low, the way y

Risel POVThree weeks. That's all it took for Leslie to become the center of everyone's world — and for me to become nothing but the roommate standing in her shadow. You'd think I'd be used to it by now. I wasn't."Risel, I think I like Sylvester.""Risel, I think I'm falling for Draken."Risel this. Risel that. I was the witch Leslie ran to whenever her heart needed sorting, the one who listened to every confession and handed back advice like it cost me nothing. And the worst part? I let her. Every single time. I'd sit on the edge of her bed at midnight, half-asleep, and still find some way to say the right thing, to make her feel better, to send her off smiling while I lay awake afterward turning it all over in my head — wondering when it would ever be my turn to be the one who got listened to.She never once asked about me. Not really. Not about my magic, not about my dreams, not about the ache I carried around like a second skin, tucked so far beneath the surface that even I somet
