Regret

After the morning rush at the supermarket dies down, I tear off a piece of bread to eat. My daughter, who's just getting out of bed at nearly noon, immediately explodes at me. "Dad, can you stop being so greedy? The moment I'm not around, you help yourself to the expensive bread. Honestly, the worst thieves are the ones under your own roof." I try to explain that I've been up since 5:00 am and haven't even had breakfast yet, but she doesn't care. She barks, "Let's get one thing straight. This is my store. I was kind enough to bring you here from the countryside so you could enjoy your retirement. Is this how you repay me?" My son-in-law jumps in unhappily. "If you're hungry, can't you just wait a little longer? There are leftovers from yesterday at home. Couldn't you go back and eat those instead?" His mother steps in with a smile. "Alright, that's enough. I'm sure he isn't the type to take advantage of people. If he ate the bread, he'll pay for it, right? It's five dollars. You can Venmo me." I laugh out of exasperation. This store is opened with my money. Every shelf is stocked with merchandise I carry in myself. I get up before dawn and work until late at night without getting paid a single cent. And now, I need to pay for a piece of bread? If this is how things are going to be, I don't want this kind of daughter anymore. I gather all my savings account books and bank cards, then change the beneficiary's name in my will to my nephew's.

Chapter 1

Seeing that I didn't respond, my daughter, Christine Parker, grew even angrier and shoved me.

"What are you standing there for? Pay up. Don't tell me you really think you can eat and drink for free. At your age, you should know better."

My son-in-law's mother, Marge Mayfield, pretended to smooth things over, but every word was actually just accusing me of being greedy and in the wrong.

"Alright, Christine. Calm down. It's just a piece of bread. It's not worth getting this upset over. Your father's getting older. He couldn't help it. Don't hold it against him."

Christine let out a cold snort. "Don't hold it against him? This isn't about a piece of bread. This is theft! I brought him here from the countryside so he could enjoy retirement, and instead, he's here sneaking around and stealing expensive food. You really can't trust the people in your own house!"

The word "theft" hit me like a knife to my chest. I couldn't stay silent anymore.

My voice trembled as I spoke. "Christine, be honest with yourself. When you said you wanted to start a business, I gave you my entire retirement fund so you could open this supermarket.

"I get up at 5:00 am every day to open the store, unload deliveries, stock shelves, clean, and run the register. I busied myself from dawn to dusk. And now all I did was eat a piece of bread because I was hungry. How does that make me a thief?"

Marge immediately frowned and cut me off. "Allan, how can you say that? The store is in Christine's name, which means it belongs to her. Besides, isn't it only natural for a father to help his own daughter?"

Her words only fueled Christine's anger. She roared, "Exactly! The store is mine. If you eat my inventory without paying, that's stealing. And if you touch anything in this store again without asking, don't blame me if I stop calling you my father."

My son-in-law, Daniel Burns, chimed in. "Yeah. If you're hungry, you could've just waited. There are leftovers at home, but you just had to take the good stuff from the store."

I looked at the three people in front of me. Every one of them stood there so self-righteously, as if I were some unforgivable criminal.

At that moment, my heart turned cold.

My wife passed away years ago. Since then, I've been raising Christine on my own, playing both roles of father and mother. I spoiled her, even emptying my savings to help her open this store.

I worked myself to exhaustion every day without asking for anything in return. All I wanted was for her to have a stable and comfortable life.
