Chapter 5

Author: Oct
Morgan chuckled, gently brushing Teagan's nose. "Alright, alright. I'll try my best to stay alive. Happy?"

Still, seeing him put on that fake, relaxed expression didn't offer her an ounce of relief.

Instead, her thoughts drifted involuntarily to the recurring nightmares that had been haunting her, the scenes flashing through her mind like phantoms.

Though she was initially hesitant, she ultimately found the courage to probe. "Morgan, the doctor who performed the kidney transplant for you and Adrian—he's your friend, right? Did he mention anything about how many kidneys Adrian had?

"How was he after the surgery? I hired a caretaker to look after him, but they—"

Panic flashed across Morgan's face. He quickly interrupted her. "Why are you suddenly asking about this, Tea? You know, I was under anesthesia at the time, so I don't remember anything. If you want, I can call my friend and ask."

"Oh, it's okay…" Teagan replied, trying hard to suppress the worry gnawing at her.

Still, her thoughts drifted back to what Milo had said to her.

"He's dead… You made me lose Dad… He already gave his first kidney to you."

Teagan felt as if an invisible hand had gripped her heart, making it hard for her to breathe. She sprang to her feet, her eyes filled with a mix of determination and panic. "No, I have to ask Milo again. He said—"

Suddenly, a lab attendant burst in frantically. "Bad news, Ms. Holt. Milo's in danger!"

"What did you say?"

It was as if all the strength left her body at once. She stumbled, instinctively gripping the nearest table for support. "H-how could that happen? That medicine was only supposed to amplify the pain. How could he be in any danger?"

The attendant hesitated, his eyes flicking nervously toward Morgan. "Well…"

Teagan didn't notice it. Panicking, she bolted toward the door. "Take me to the hospital now!"

On the way to the hospital, Teagan's mind went blank. All she could see were flashes of Milo coughing up blood. She clenched her fists, her nails digging hard into her palms, but the pain barely registered.

When they finally arrived, she practically leaped from the car. She ran frantically toward the operating room, only to be stopped by a doctor.

"Are you Milo Shepherd's mother?" the doctor asked. "The examination report shows that he's severely malnourished. His body contains—"

"Malnourished?"

Teagan froze for a moment, then her face twisted with anger and accusation. "What has Adrian been doing? How could he let his own son get malnourished? He's nothing but a brute! Where's his father? I want to see him now!"

The doctor looked at her in confusion. "Ma'am, I think there must be some misunderstanding. When we were reviewing the patient's information, we noticed that his father is deceased."

"Closing yourself off and sleeping through life because of those who've hurt you," I advised, "isn't worth it."Milo opened his arms and hugged my now-transparent form, but the feeling was so tangible it was as if we were still in the world of the living."Even though I no longer reside in a physical body, we can still meet in dreams, Milo," I said. "No matter what lies ahead, I'll always love you, my brave, strong child. So, wake up."Tears soaked into my collar as he nodded. "I will, Dad."After that, he whispered in my ear, words only half-formed and dreamlike, too vague for me to understand. Finally, I saw him turn and wave into the distance.Perhaps he was saying goodbye to the father he had lost.In the cold, sterile hospital ward, Milo finally opened his eyes. He looked out at the world he had chosen to stay in, now waiting for him to fill it.…When the hospital called to tell Teagan that Milo had woken up, she ran there without a second thought. When she arrived, all s

Teagan's voice trembled with emotion. "I wronged you terribly, Adrian. I hate that I was kept in the dark, that I let Morgan do whatever he wanted to you. Lately, I've been dreaming about you and Milo every night."I couldn't even imagine how much pain you were in that day…"Not just her, but even I, now nothing more than a wandering spirit, couldn't bear to think about it."Don't worry. I've found your killer," she added. "I'll make him pay for this in blood."Frankly, vengeance didn't matter to me. Milo was the only thing I couldn't let go of when I died. Now that I was nothing but a spirit, even tearing Morgan apart wouldn't change anything.Who knew if Morgan would also become a wandering spirit after he died? Would we meet? I had no idea and no interest in knowing. However, Teagan seemed convinced that everything between us could be forgiven and that she could start anew as long as she punished Morgan, even if I was already dead. She didn't stay long at my grave. Before lea

Everything Morgan said was laid bare before Teagan to judge. She had never truly believed that a two-faced man like him would stay loyal to her, but even so, she hadn't expected him to go this far. This was more than betrayal. It was a blatant challenge to her authority.Overcome with rage, Teagan struck him across the face. The sharp sound echoed, and a red mark quickly appeared on the face he took so much pride in."And you dare to say Adrian's death had nothing to do with you?" she screamed. "I was good to you! What have I done for you to push him that far?"Morgan froze for a moment, his composure cracking. The mask he had worn for so long finally shattered in that moment. Soon, his eyes glistened with tears as he put on a pitiful act."I know I'm not completely innocent in what happened to Adrian, but I did it all because of you, Tea! You treated me so well, and I couldn't bear the thought of losing you. I know it's too much to ask for your forgiveness, but I'm just somebody

It was as if Milo would remain in a deep sleep forever, suspended between life and death. No one would toll a bell for him, but he would be singing a silent elegy for himself.…"This can't go on."Teagan gripped the bedsheet so tightly that deep creases formed under her hand. "Dead or alive, I will find you, Adrian."She could act recklessly without a second thought, but she couldn't sit still and wait for fate to decide things for her. As for where I was buried, it was never a secret. With her resources, finding it would be easy.Ironically, if she had believed even a single word Milo said before, she wouldn't have waited until now to think of looking for my grave.Perhaps even Morgan mocked her behind her back for this. It didn't matter if Teagan had once loved me or not because she had long forgotten me, the man Morgan hated. This was the woman I had once loved with everything I had. Now, because of her, I had lost everything. It didn't take long before someone sent Teagan

Teagan grasped Morgan's hand, signaling him to stop talking with a pained look in her eyes. "I know… I just can't accept it. How could Adrian have died for no reason? It's simply impossible…"Even as she spoke, she had no confidence in her words. Her gaze kept drifting toward the operating room. Milo's life, too, hung in the balance. Now, it felt official that I was forever separated from Teagan, caught on the other side of life.Joy, anger, grief—they were all things of the past. Still, I remained certain that, though I had parted ways with her before my death, we had once truly loved each other.Teagan coughed lightly, betraying her struggle to let go of everything we had shared. We had once chosen each other firmly. If it hadn't been genuine, how could we have ever promised to spend our lives together? She still remembered the moment we finally decided to settle down. It was by the sea, waves crashing around us.Facing the endless blue, she had asked me, "Why should I be with

The doctor's serious expression made Teagan realize he wasn't joking. I was long gone. Who would joke about a life, after all?A chill ran down her spine. Milo had repeatedly tried to tell her that I was dead, yet she had chosen to think he was lying or exaggerating rather than face the truth. If I were still alive, how could I bear to let Milo live in this dark, merciless world at her mercy?Teagan's voice sharpened with urgency as she gripped the doctor's wrist, demanding answers. "This isn't real. How could Adrian be dead? You'd better tell me exactly what's going on!"The doctor frowned and gently pulled his hand away. "I'm sorry, ma'am. I'm just telling you what the patient's information says."She struggled to get a word out, as if her throat had been clamped shut. The timid and weak man she had once thought I was suddenly became an untouchable ghost. Meanwhile, her child was teetering on the edge of life and death.Teagan, who had once carried herself with pride, suddenly
