Chapter 2

Penulis: Rosemary
Two days left.

Kaelan had promised me he would walk in holding my hand this time.

By five in the afternoon, Kaelan came back to the manor himself.

He stood at the bedroom door and watched the maid fasten the last clasp of my gown. He reached out his hand to me. “Tonight, you come with me,Everyone should know who you are before the ceremony.”

I looked at his hand for a moment, then placed mine in it.

Together, we went to the fortress.

The Moon Hall blazed with light. Pack elders, allied Alphas, and noble families filled the room. Some whispered about the future Luna Kaelan had kept away from public ceremonies for years.

At exactly eight o’clock, the doors opened.

Kaelan walked into the Moon Hall with me on his arm.

He wore a black suit with the Alpha crest at his shoulder, his power pressing the hall into silence. Just standing there made every werewolf want to lower their head.

Then every eye turned to me.

Someone whispered, “Is that Evelyn Hale?”

Another voice answered under its breath, “I thought Lady Vera would be at his side. She’s the one Alpha Kaelan always protects in public.”

The words were quiet, but werewolf hearing made quiet things useless. Kaelan heard them too. His expression cooled at once.

An elder stepped forward with an awkward smile. “Alpha, is this Miss Evelyn Hale?”

Kaelan’s hand tightened over mine. “Yes. Eve is my future Luna. She is the only woman I will bring to Blackthorn’s mate ceremony, and anyone who forgets that can answer to me.”

The hall went still. A few elders lowered their eyes, and the noble families who had been whispering quickly came forward to greet me, smiling as if they had never expected anyone else at his side.

I answered them politely.

Kaelan lowered his voice for me alone. “Don’t let them get in your head. I brought you here as my partner. Tonight, and every night after the ceremony, my side belongs to you.”

Before I could answer, the hall stirred again.

Vera appeared at the door.

She wore black, her face pale as frost, her dead mate’s wolf crest pinned to her chest. The moment she walked in, several elders turned toward her with sympathy.

Someone whispered, “Lady Vera still came tonight. She must be trying so hard.”

Vera stopped in front of us and gave me a soft smile. “So this is Miss Hale,I’ve heard so much about you.”

Kaelan glanced at her. “Vera, you should sit down if you’re tired.”

Vera lowered her eyes at once. “No, Kaelan. Don’t worry about me,” she said gently. “Tonight is your night with Miss Hale. I can take care of myself.”

Her words were considerate. But every wolf nearby heard them.

The elder smiled awkwardly. “Alpha, the first dance is about to begin.”

Kaelan looked at me.

Then Vera suddenly swayed. She caught the edge of the table and forced a smile. “I’m sorry. The scent of the ceremonial candles just reminded me of Ethan’s funeral. I’ll be fine. Please don’t let me ruin anything.”

Kaelan’s expression changed. I saw his hand loosen around mine.

A few years ago, I would have held on tighter. I would have reminded him that he had brought me here, that this was supposed to be my first dance as his future Luna.

This time, I let go first.

“Go,” I said.

Kaelan looked at me, startled.

I smiled calmly. “Lady Vera doesn’t look well.”

For a moment, he seemed like he wanted to say something. But Vera whispered his name again.

In the end, Kaelan walked to her side.

Vera’s fingers closed around his sleeve as if she were too weak to stand, but when she glanced past his shoulder at me, her eyes were perfectly clear.

When the first dance began, Kaelan was not beside me. He stood with Vera near the center of the floor, one hand supporting her arm while she lowered her head as if she were trying not to cry.

Vera gave me a soft, almost apologetic smile. “You won’t mind, will you, Miss Hale? Kaelan promised Ethan he would look after me. Besides, you still have tomorrow.”

Her voice was gentle enough to sound innocent and loud enough for every nearby wolf to hear.

A few young ladies looked at me with open pity. One of them murmured, “Poor Miss Hale. Future Luna or not, she still can’t keep him beside her.”

Another laughed under her breath. “A title is only a title. Lady Vera doesn’t need one when the Alpha keeps choosing her anyway.”

I had heard worse. After three years of standing second to Vera, pity no longer had teeth.

Another elder sighed. “Ethan died saving him. Of course Alpha Kaelan can’t abandon Lady Vera.”

No one said anything about the future Luna who had entered the hall with him. No one asked why I was standing alone.

Halfway through the ball, Vera pressed a hand to her chest again, her face going white.

She said she smelled the blood from the battle where Ethan died.

Kaelan immediately put down his glass. “Vera’s bond scar is hurting again,” he told the wolves beside him. “I’ll take her back first.”

Beta Eric reminded him in a low voice, “Alpha, Miss Hale is still here.”

Kaelan seemed to remember me then.

Across the crowd, he looked over and sent me a message.

[Eve, wait for me a little while.]

I looked at the message and replied with one word.

[Okay.]

Then I stood alone on the balcony and watched Kaelan drape his jacket over Vera’s shoulders before helping her into the car. It did not hurt anymore. My heart had seen this scene too many times.

Before the car door closed, Vera looked straight at me through the window. A second later, my phone buzzed.

[Kaelan says the night air will make my bond scar worse. He always notices things like that.]

[Don’t wait too long, Miss Hale. Some women need a title. Some are simply chosen.]

The music inside the Moon Hall continued.

Behind me, the elders were still praising Kaelan’s loyalty to his dead brother.

  • Signed Away Under the Full Moon   Chapter 10

In the end, Kaelan didn't take back the jewels and gowns. He had everything packed and sent to Harbor City, saying it was compensation he owed me. I didn't open the boxes. I handed them all to the Pack Council and used them to establish a fund for mates who had lost their partners.Elder Maren called me once afterward. She said that after Vera left Blackthorn, Kaelan didn't attend a single banquet for an entire month. Once pack business was done, he would go alone to the empty Moon Goddess altar. Some wolves heard his wolf howling there, low and broken, like it was waiting for someone who would never come back. After listening, I only said, "I see."No satisfaction. No pity. When some feelings end, hatred isn't always necessary. Not looking back is the cleanest ending.I stayed in Harbor City.Noah's Moon Tide really had been a disaster. His drinks tasted like moral lectures, his menu read like breakup poetry, and Maggie kept saying he would starve if he kept going.Later, I couldn't s

Kaelan still seemed desperate to hold on to something. He looked at the trench coat I was wearing and suddenly said, "You left with almost nothing. But all the jewels and gowns are still at Blackthorn. Eve, if you really don't care about me, why did you keep everything I gave you?"I froze for a moment before I realized what he meant. Those things. The necklaces, crowns, gowns, and jewels he had sent after every broken promise.I almost laughed. "Kaelan, those were your apology gifts. How do you have the nerve to ask me about them?"His expression stiffened."I didn't bring them because they disgust me," I said. "Every single piece reminds me that you left me for Vera again. Did you think I loved them that much?"His throat moved, as if the words had cut deep."If you feel bad about it, I can have everything sent back," I said. "I don't want a single piece."He shook his head quickly. "That's not what I meant.""Then what did you mean?"He looked toward Noah standing beside the car, an

For the first time, Kaelan learned a person could feel hot and cold at the same time.Harbor City was warm in late August. Inside the heavy white wolf mascot suit, sweat had soaked through his shirt. But when he saw Evelyn throw herself into Noah's arms, his blood turned to ice.He knew the ceremony had been canceled. He knew Evelyn was no longer his future Luna. She could meet another wolf. She could start a new life. She could leave him buried in Blackthorn's past forever.Yet he still held on to one selfish fantasy. He imagined she would think of him when she saw the white rose. He imagined that when she learned he had arranged those things for her, she would turn back and look at him, even once. But she didn't.After the music festival ended, Noah and I walked away along the beach. At the end of the streetlight's glow, the white wolf mascot stood there. Its furry arms stretched out, blocking my path.I told Noah to wait for me in the car.Noah didn't look convinced. "Are you sure?"

The next morning, Noah arrived downstairs at the guesthouse right on time. His car was old but clean, and the passenger seat had a thin blanket and a bottle of warm water waiting on it."Mr. Reed, how did you know I was staying here?" I asked."Nine out of ten outsiders who come to this stretch of coast stay at Maggie's," he said. "The tenth usually gets lost."I paid him a generous guide fee.Noah looked at the transfer notice with a wounded expression. "Since we're being this formal, can you stop calling me Mr. Reed? You could call me Noah.""Fine, Noah," I said. "Make sure I have fun today."He smiled. "Yes, ma'am. Anything for my rich client."Harbor City looked nothing like the North.Noah took me to a seaside food stall. Just as the vendor was about to sprinkle rosemary into the soup, he stopped her. "She doesn't like rosemary."I paused. I really didn't like rosemary. Only Kaelan knew that. But Noah said it so naturally that I didn't think too much about it then. That afternoon,

Harbor City was warmer than the North. When the plane landed, dawn had just begun to pale. Sea wind tasted of salt, and standing outside the airport with my suitcase, I felt free for the first time.I had reserved a small guesthouse near the sea. The owner was a warm middle-aged she-wolf named Maggie. When she saw how much later I arrived than planned, she immediately poured me a cup of hot tea. "Did you run into trouble on the way? A girl dragging a suitcase this far shouldn't just tough it out alone.""It's solved now," I said."Good." She handed me the key. "Your room's on the second floor. If you're hungry, go to the late-night place on the corner. The owner's got a mouth on him, but the food is good."I had planned to stay quietly in Harbor City for a while and slowly figure out what to do next. But after waking from a long sleep, I suddenly thought, since I was free, why not go out first? That night, I went to the place Maggie mentioned. It was called Moon Tide. It claimed to be

  • Signed Away Under the Full Moon   Chapter 5

Kaelan lowered his head and saw the name he had signed with his own hand.At that moment, the strongest Alpha in the North stood on an empty altar and, for the first time, heard his wolf let out a howl so broken it was almost out of control.Kaelan had always believed Evelyn would wait for him.She had waited too many times. Waited for him to come back from Vera, waited for him to make up for a birthday, waited for him to set a new ceremony date, waited for promises that had been delayed until they barely resembled promises anymore. So he had never imagined there would come a day when she truly stopped waiting. He gripped the cancellation application so tightly his knuckles turned white. His wolf surged through his blood, forcing several younger werewolves nearby to step back on instinct."Where did she go?"Elder Maren did not answer.Kaelan lifted his head sharply. His voice dropped until it was frightening. "I asked you, where did she go?""Alpha," Maren said, "she is no longer your
