Chapter 3

Autor: Maplea
Vivian turned around.

This was her first time meeting Evelyn.

Sebastian frowned. "Why were you not resting and recovering?"

"Why did you care?" Evelyn curled her lips into a faint smile. "You did not care about me anyway. You still rushed back here to play the hero."

Sebastian walked closer and lowered his voice. "Do not start. Your injuries have not healed yet. I will have someone take you home."

That expression allowed Vivian to glimpse a side of Sebastian she had never seen before, a warmth and liveliness that did not belong to the distant "Mr. Hayes" she knew. She said nothing and quietly left on her own.

The next morning, Vivian received a call from the wedding planner.

"Hello, Miss Carter. I am sorry to bother you. Regarding some valuable items that were prepared for your wedding with Mr. Hayes, they are still stored in our hotel’s safe. We wanted to ask whether you had time to come and collect them."

Vivian rubbed her forehead. "Please arrange to have them delivered to me."

The woman hesitated. "Miss Carter, the items are quite valuable. According to our hotel’s policy, we recommend that items like these be confirmed and collected personally."

There was a brief silence. "Got it. I will pick them up."

The person in charge was a young woman. The moment she saw Vivian, she put on a professional smile.

"Miss Carter, this way."

She led Vivian into a private viewing room. On a velvet display table sat a collection of dazzling treasures.

At the center was the pair of diamond rings. The stones shimmered under the lights. Sebastian bought them at an auction. He once told her that the pink diamond matched her temperament perfectly. She had secretly been happy about it for days.

Beside them were two wedding gowns. The hems were embroidered by hand with delicate lily-of-the-valley patterns. Sebastian flew them in from Paris. Still, Vivian always loved baby’s breath flowers.

Then there were the matching jewelry pieces and the veil. Every item was priceless.

The woman looked at them with a hint of regret. Vivian only stared quietly.

"There is one more thing." The woman copied a video file from the computer and handed it to her. "This was the compatibility interview video we arranged. The planner said it turned out beautifully. It was supposed to be played during the wedding reception."

Vivian was startled for a moment. Then she remembered.

At the beginning of the wedding preparations, the planner suggested adding a fun segment. They were each asked five questions separately to test how well they knew each other. Their answers were supposed to be revealed at the wedding.

"Thank you." She reached out to take the file. Someone accidentally touched the computer. The large screen lit up and the video began playing.

Sebastian appeared on the screen.

He sat in a warmly decorated interview room and wore a simple white shirt. It was a rare glimpse of the man he was in private.

The planner’s cheerful voice came from behind the camera. "Mr. Hayes, are you ready? First question. When did you first fall for Miss Carter?"

Sebastian paused. "I think Vivian and I would give different answers to this question because she did not notice me at that time."

"Oh?" The planner sounded curious. "Could you tell us more? Was Miss Carter especially beautiful back then? Was it love at first sight?"

Sebastian let out a quiet laugh and shook his head.

"No. She was not exactly at her best. Her hair was messy. There were bruises on her face."

The planner sounded surprised. "Then what was it?"

"She had been cornered by someone threatening her and telling her what news she should write and what she should not. What did she do?" Sebastian’s smile deepened. "She looked at them, smiled, and said, what I write is what needs to be written.

"I remember thinking how there could be a woman who remained so fearless in a situation like that."

The planner gasped. "Wow. I never would have guessed Miss Carter, who always seems so gentle, could say something like that."

The video continued, yet Vivian could not bear to hear it anymore.

A ringing filled her ears and replaced the sound with another voice. It mixed with the noisy background of the bar. The bartender’s lazy voice echoed in her memory.

"Do not underestimate Mr. Sebastian. He was very good with sweet words. Once, they played truth or dare here. Someone asked him what he liked about Miss Evelyn. After all, her temper was explosive.

"Mr. Sebastian said it was because Evelyn had a kind of freedom and confidence that no one else had.

"Someone once kidnapped Evelyn just to humiliate him. They said they would only let her go if Sebastian got down on his knees. Evelyn refused. She looked at him and said, it was only life or death. What was there to fear. Then she used her own strength to slowly break free from the ropes.

"Mr. Sebastian said that was the moment he realized that even when completely alone and with no one to rely on, there was still a woman who could say something so fearless and effortless."

Six months later.Vivian stood at the center of the stage, holding the heavy annual journalism award trophy in her hands.Below her, a sea of faces filled the auditorium. Applause surged like waves, while camera flashes merged into a brilliant field of light. The host’s passionate voice echoed through the hall. “Miss Vivian’s investigative series not only exposed the systemic corruption that existed within the Meridian International School for years, but also sparked discussions on legislative reform and industry accountability. Her work embodied the courage, integrity, and conscience that define true journalism.”Vivian gave a slight nod and calmly looked across the audience.“Thank you to the judging panel, and to every colleague who supported me throughout this journey.” Her voice carried clearly through the microphone, steady and composed. “This award belongs to everyone who continued to question the truth. It belongs to those voices that were once ignored, but can finally be

The threat from the other side of the door had barely faded when the apartment intercom rang.Vivian picked up the phone. The voice on the other end belonged to the building’s security desk. “Miss Carter, two suspicious individuals attempted to enter the building using forged identification. We stopped them, but we suspect there may be more people involved. The police have already been contacted. Please remain inside for your own safety. Do not leave, and do not open the door for anyone.”Almost at the same moment, her phone vibrated. Leon’s name appeared on the screen.“Stay inside. Lock the door. No matter who comes, do not open it.” Leon’s voice was deeper than usual. “My people will arrive in three minutes. Sebastian also received the news. His men are already on their way.”Vivian’s fingers tightened around the phone.“Do you have any news about Sophia?” It was the only thing she cared about.“There was progress in Switzerland. We located the exact place. Local authorities a

Vivian briefly explained Sophia’s situation and her concerns.Leon’s reply was concise: [Send me her name and any known information. I’ll have someone investigate. Stay safe. Do not act alone.]By the time everything was done, the sky already began to lighten. She knew the battle ahead would be far more dangerous than her previous investigation. This was no longer just a fight for the truth. It was also a confrontation with powerful forces that might do anything once pushed into a corner. When it was nine in the morning, several major international media outlets and multiple independent domestic news platforms simultaneously released in-depth investigative reports on Meridian International School and the network of interests behind it.Unlike her previous article, which focused primarily on campus violence, this series of reports went straight for the core. The most explosive revelation was an interview with a source whose voice had been altered for protection. The interviewee c

The young man lowered his voice.“The target is home. Sebastian came by and stayed for approximately eight minutes. They spoke at the door, but the conversation was unclear… Yes, Sebastian has left. The target appears to still be working.”A woman’s voice came through the earpiece, calm and detached.“Keep watching. I want to know who she meets next, where she goes, and what she does.”“Understood.”The door to the fire exit closed quietly. The hallway fell silent again. Yet beneath that silence, countless undercurrents quietly surged.Inside the apartment, Vivian sat at her desk, extracting and organizing key information, cross-referencing it with the evidence she gathered before. All of it was for one person, Sophia Harper. She was the girl she met by chance in England, only to have her mysteriously disappear afterward.During her first year in the UK, Vivian sketched by the River Cam in Cambridge when she met Sophia, who was also traveling alone. The sixteen-year-old girl

Vivian returned to her apartment, closed the door behind her, and placed the folder on the coffee table. She switched on the ceiling light and pulled out the documents inside. It was a thick stack of files. Most of them were in English, with attachments in German and French. She scanned through them quickly, and her expression grew increasingly serious. What Leon gave her was far more than some information. The files contained detailed records of more than a dozen overseas investments made by the Warren family over the past five years, primarily concentrated in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. On the surface, they appeared to be legitimate ventures in real estate development and mineral acquisitions. However, beneath layers of complicated transactions, the funds eventually flowed into several shell companies registered in the British Virgin Islands, which then funneled money into certain special projects.Three of those projects were directly connected to Meridian International

The words “my fiancée” struck the terrace like a thunderclap.Even Mr. Cole could not hide his shock. His lips parted in disbelief. For the first time, the calm and unreadable eyes of Sebastian showed a crack.Vivian picked up where Leon left off. “Mr. Warren, did you still think I did not have enough backing to shake the giant tree you mentioned?”A vein throbbed at Edward’s temple. He looked at Vivian, then at the imposing man standing beside her. Finally, his eyes shifted toward Sebastian. The Hayes family was already troublesome enough. Adding a man like Leon, whose background was even more terrifying…The muscles on his face twitched slightly before he forced out an extremely stiff smile. “Mr. Zane, this was all a misunderstanding. I had no idea Miss Carter was your fiancée. This was truly my oversight. My deepest apologies.”He practically forced the words out through clenched teeth, then shot a sharp glare at the people behind him. “What were you waiting for? Let us go.”
