Chapter 5

Autor: Maplea
The moment the article about Zenith Capital was published, it caused an uproar.

The public discussion surrounding the scandal reached an unprecedented level. The mysterious investment firm even sent Vivian an invitation, stating that they hoped to have a friendly discussion regarding certain details mentioned in the report.

A waiter led her through a long corridor lined with soundproof carpeting and stopped in front of a heavy walnut door.

Inside was a private room decorated in a classic Western style, and standing there was one person.

The moment Vivian saw that face, her mind went blank.

It was Evelyn.

"Miss Carter, it is a pleasure to meet you." Evelyn walked forward gracefully and extended her hand. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Evelyn Riley from Zenith Capital."

Vivian forced herself to raise her hand and briefly shook hers.

"Why were you here?"

Evelyn smiled elegantly. "Why pretend to be so surprised? You already knew that the real owner of Zenith Capital was Sebastian. Was that not why you approached him, pursued him openly, and even married him? All just to investigate his company and obtain insider information?"

The insulting accusation made Vivian clench her fist. The pain from her nails digging into her palm was the only thing that brought her back to reality.

"I never had that intention."

"It does not matter." Evelyn did not seem interested in her answer. "I just find you pitiful. You threw away a woman’s dignity pursuing a man. On your wedding day, you were discarded like a piece of trash."

Evelyn put on a faint smile. "Women should still have some restraint. When Sebastian realized he loved me, he was the one who pursued me. From his confession to his proposal, he initiated everything. He always said those were things a man should do, because he could not bear to make the woman he loved take the first step."

Ever since Vivian decided to pursue Sebastian, she heard countless versions of the same story from different people.

She believed she had become immune to it. However, when she heard those words from Evelyn herself, the humiliation and bitterness cut deeper than ever before. Still, Vivian composed herself and met Evelyn’s gaze.

"I never believed that loving someone and bravely pursuing them was something shameful. As for you…" Vivian’s voice remained calm, though an almost imperceptible tremor slipped through. "Someone who interfered in another person’s relationship, what right did you have to stand here and mock my feelings?"

Evelyn’s expression turned cold. Then she smiled.

"Your mental strength really was impressive, Miss Journalist." She stood and slowly walked toward the other side of the room. "I am curious whether you will still be this calm later."

She reached out and pressed a button on the wall. The panels slid open. Behind them was a much larger private room. Beyond the one-way glass, voices carried clearly from the room on the other side.

"Sebastian, you were out of the underworld for over a decade, but when you finally made a move, you cleaned the house and installed an entirely new power structure in the Backstreets. No one here had your kind of nerve." A familiar male voice laughed.

"I also heard that Miss Carter sold all the jewelry and wedding dresses from the ceremony as secondhand items. Your disappearing act really angered her badly. So were you two still getting married?" The person speaking was one of the wealthy heirs. After a brief silence, Sebastian’s voice came through.

"Yes. We will reschedule."

"You were still going through with it?" The young heir sounded disapproving. "Sebastian, do not take this the wrong way, but why bother? The only person you ever really loved was Evelyn anyway. Why not use this opportunity to completely end things with the Carter family?

"Even if your grandfather does not approve of Evelyn, after all these years, as long as you stand your ground, he will eventually give in. Why drag Miss Carter into this? She was just a proper, ordinary journalist. She was not from your world."

Vivian felt every fingertip go numb. As she looked at Evelyn’s composed profile, the truth dawned on her. This had all been a setup.

"She was someone perfectly suited for marriage." Sebastian’s calm voice came through the glass. "She came from a respectable family, had a gentle temperament, knew how to conduct herself, and would make an excellent Mrs. Hayes. She loved me. Besides…"

He paused.

"I did not want marriage to become a cage for Evelyn. She deserved to be free."

Boom.

Vivian felt a loud ringing explode in her ears. Her vision darkened. She nearly lost her balance.

Every fantasy she ever held was crushed by those simple, emotionless words.

She could not stay any longer. She turned around and fled.

The corridor remained silent. Only after she rushed out of the building did she finally stop. Her eyes burned painfully, yet not a single tear fell.

At that moment, her phone vibrated violently inside her bag. She answered mechanically. Mr. Cole’s panicked voice exploded through the receiver.

"Vivian, where were you? Zenith Capital just released an official statement. They completely denied your report. They claim your data sources were unreliable, that your article was based on malicious speculation, and they are preparing to pursue legal action against you."

Six months later.Vivian stood at the center of the stage, holding the heavy annual journalism award trophy in her hands.Below her, a sea of faces filled the auditorium. Applause surged like waves, while camera flashes merged into a brilliant field of light. The host’s passionate voice echoed through the hall. “Miss Vivian’s investigative series not only exposed the systemic corruption that existed within the Meridian International School for years, but also sparked discussions on legislative reform and industry accountability. Her work embodied the courage, integrity, and conscience that define true journalism.”Vivian gave a slight nod and calmly looked across the audience.“Thank you to the judging panel, and to every colleague who supported me throughout this journey.” Her voice carried clearly through the microphone, steady and composed. “This award belongs to everyone who continued to question the truth. It belongs to those voices that were once ignored, but can finally be

The threat from the other side of the door had barely faded when the apartment intercom rang.Vivian picked up the phone. The voice on the other end belonged to the building’s security desk. “Miss Carter, two suspicious individuals attempted to enter the building using forged identification. We stopped them, but we suspect there may be more people involved. The police have already been contacted. Please remain inside for your own safety. Do not leave, and do not open the door for anyone.”Almost at the same moment, her phone vibrated. Leon’s name appeared on the screen.“Stay inside. Lock the door. No matter who comes, do not open it.” Leon’s voice was deeper than usual. “My people will arrive in three minutes. Sebastian also received the news. His men are already on their way.”Vivian’s fingers tightened around the phone.“Do you have any news about Sophia?” It was the only thing she cared about.“There was progress in Switzerland. We located the exact place. Local authorities a

Vivian briefly explained Sophia’s situation and her concerns.Leon’s reply was concise: [Send me her name and any known information. I’ll have someone investigate. Stay safe. Do not act alone.]By the time everything was done, the sky already began to lighten. She knew the battle ahead would be far more dangerous than her previous investigation. This was no longer just a fight for the truth. It was also a confrontation with powerful forces that might do anything once pushed into a corner. When it was nine in the morning, several major international media outlets and multiple independent domestic news platforms simultaneously released in-depth investigative reports on Meridian International School and the network of interests behind it.Unlike her previous article, which focused primarily on campus violence, this series of reports went straight for the core. The most explosive revelation was an interview with a source whose voice had been altered for protection. The interviewee c

The young man lowered his voice.“The target is home. Sebastian came by and stayed for approximately eight minutes. They spoke at the door, but the conversation was unclear… Yes, Sebastian has left. The target appears to still be working.”A woman’s voice came through the earpiece, calm and detached.“Keep watching. I want to know who she meets next, where she goes, and what she does.”“Understood.”The door to the fire exit closed quietly. The hallway fell silent again. Yet beneath that silence, countless undercurrents quietly surged.Inside the apartment, Vivian sat at her desk, extracting and organizing key information, cross-referencing it with the evidence she gathered before. All of it was for one person, Sophia Harper. She was the girl she met by chance in England, only to have her mysteriously disappear afterward.During her first year in the UK, Vivian sketched by the River Cam in Cambridge when she met Sophia, who was also traveling alone. The sixteen-year-old girl

Vivian returned to her apartment, closed the door behind her, and placed the folder on the coffee table. She switched on the ceiling light and pulled out the documents inside. It was a thick stack of files. Most of them were in English, with attachments in German and French. She scanned through them quickly, and her expression grew increasingly serious. What Leon gave her was far more than some information. The files contained detailed records of more than a dozen overseas investments made by the Warren family over the past five years, primarily concentrated in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. On the surface, they appeared to be legitimate ventures in real estate development and mineral acquisitions. However, beneath layers of complicated transactions, the funds eventually flowed into several shell companies registered in the British Virgin Islands, which then funneled money into certain special projects.Three of those projects were directly connected to Meridian International

The words “my fiancée” struck the terrace like a thunderclap.Even Mr. Cole could not hide his shock. His lips parted in disbelief. For the first time, the calm and unreadable eyes of Sebastian showed a crack.Vivian picked up where Leon left off. “Mr. Warren, did you still think I did not have enough backing to shake the giant tree you mentioned?”A vein throbbed at Edward’s temple. He looked at Vivian, then at the imposing man standing beside her. Finally, his eyes shifted toward Sebastian. The Hayes family was already troublesome enough. Adding a man like Leon, whose background was even more terrifying…The muscles on his face twitched slightly before he forced out an extremely stiff smile. “Mr. Zane, this was all a misunderstanding. I had no idea Miss Carter was your fiancée. This was truly my oversight. My deepest apologies.”He practically forced the words out through clenched teeth, then shot a sharp glare at the people behind him. “What were you waiting for? Let us go.”
