Chapter 7

Autor: Maplea
"Vivian, have you eaten? When are you and Sebastian coming back again? The wedding arrangements still need to be discussed together..."

"Mom." Vivian cut her off. "I'm not marrying him."

There were a few seconds of silence on the other end. Then her mother spoke again. Her voice carried the same timid, apologetic tone as always. "Sebastian was such a good man. He treated you well, and someone like him was hard to find. Do not be so stubborn. As long as the person was good, just endure the rest and it would pass."

It was all about enduring again.

Her mother endured for an entire lifetime, endured until she lost every shred of dignity, endured until she believed this was simply the fate women were meant to accept.

Vivian felt a sharp ache in her chest.

She took a deep breath and asked in a soft voice, "Mom, would you leave with me?"

"Leave?" Her mother hesitated. "Your father finally started treating me a little better recently. Where would I even go if I left? Vivian, do not act impulsively. Marry Sebastian. Your father is very satisfied with him. Then our family..."

Vivian stopped listening.

She closed her eyes, forced back the tightness in her throat, and replied in a low voice, "I will call you again later." Then she hung up.

Not far away, a massive LED screen broadcast financial news.

A female anchor spoke clearly and professionally.

"According to reports, Miss Evelyn, originally from Harbor City, recently took over as the new CEO of Zenith Capital. Sources close to the company reveal that behind Miss Evelyn stands a mysterious financial backer.

"Our reporters also learned that the journalist involved in the previous controversy surrounding Zenith Capital’s alleged profit manipulation, referred to only as Miss Carter, resigned from her position today. It remains unclear whether Zenith Capital will continue pursuing legal action against her.

"Furthermore, this station learned that the journalist has long been surrounded by controversy. She allegedly used her position as a reporter to pressure others multiple times, even threatening to expose people she personally disliked through news reports..."

The screen switched to footage from that night at the noodle shop. The blond-haired man’s furious accusations played across the display.

The pedestrians who stopped to watch began whispering.

"Reporters these days will write anything just to get attention."

"Exactly. She was completely irresponsible. They should sue her."

"I heard she is a woman too. How arrogant."

Vivian stood frozen in place. As she watched the news scroll across the screen and listened to those voices around her, she found herself unable to name the feeling in her heart.

She worked as a journalist for years. Every article was carefully written. Every piece of data was repeatedly verified. She never betrayed the press badge on her chest or her own conscience.

Yet now, the truth was covered up with ease, and the very principles she defended became, in the mouths of others, nothing but a misuse of power.

Heavy raindrops crashed down all of a sudden.

The crowd scattered in a rush of startled cries and fled for cover. However, Vivian stood still and let the rain fall around her.

Soon, the world before her eyes became a blur.

Through the hazy curtain of water, she saw a family of three across the street. A father lifted his daughter onto his shoulders. Her laughter was bright and clear beneath the umbrella.

She saw a young couple squeezed beneath one umbrella, the boy shielding the girl in his arms.

Everyone had somewhere they belonged. Yet she alone stood there, abandoned beneath the icy veil of rain.

She did not remember how she made it back to her apartment. She never changed out of her soaked clothes. She stumbled to the sofa and collapsed onto it, as though every last bit of strength had been drained from her body.

Before consciousness faded into darkness, the only thing she felt was the cold.

She knew she had a fever. Yet her body refused to move. She did not even have the strength to lift a finger.

Her consciousness drifted between dreams and reality. In a daze, she felt as though she floated above herself and watched everything from afar.

She saw her mother smile with satisfaction after being comforted by just a few words from her father, already forgetting the humiliation she suffered only days ago.

She saw Sebastian standing beside Evelyn and patiently reminding her again and again about the details she needed to pay attention to during meetings.

She saw the newsroom still brightly lit. Her colleagues continued their work as usual. Her departure left behind no trace.

Eventually, her drifting consciousness fell back into her body.

When she opened her eyes again, sunlight already filled the room.

Her throat was dry and painfully sore. She struggled to sit up and picked up her phone. After looking at the date, she froze.

Three days had passed.

Supporting her weak, unsteady body, Vivian made her way to the bathroom. The mirror reflected a pale, haggard face. She looked so worn and disheveled that even she could barely recognize herself.

She stared at her reflection for a long moment. Then she turned on the shower.

After washing up, she walked into the living room and picked up the suitcase she packed long ago. Then she left without the slightest hesitation.

The airport terminal was filled with the gentle sound of announcements.

Vivian passed through security and walked toward the international departure gates.

Beyond the enormous glass walls, planes rose and descended one after another, disappearing toward different horizons.

The boarding announcement sounded. She rose to her feet.

The plane roared down the runway and soared into the sky.

Outside the window, sunlight pierced through the sea of clouds and bathed the world in brilliant gold.

Six months later.Vivian stood at the center of the stage, holding the heavy annual journalism award trophy in her hands.Below her, a sea of faces filled the auditorium. Applause surged like waves, while camera flashes merged into a brilliant field of light. The host’s passionate voice echoed through the hall. “Miss Vivian’s investigative series not only exposed the systemic corruption that existed within the Meridian International School for years, but also sparked discussions on legislative reform and industry accountability. Her work embodied the courage, integrity, and conscience that define true journalism.”Vivian gave a slight nod and calmly looked across the audience.“Thank you to the judging panel, and to every colleague who supported me throughout this journey.” Her voice carried clearly through the microphone, steady and composed. “This award belongs to everyone who continued to question the truth. It belongs to those voices that were once ignored, but can finally be

The threat from the other side of the door had barely faded when the apartment intercom rang.Vivian picked up the phone. The voice on the other end belonged to the building’s security desk. “Miss Carter, two suspicious individuals attempted to enter the building using forged identification. We stopped them, but we suspect there may be more people involved. The police have already been contacted. Please remain inside for your own safety. Do not leave, and do not open the door for anyone.”Almost at the same moment, her phone vibrated. Leon’s name appeared on the screen.“Stay inside. Lock the door. No matter who comes, do not open it.” Leon’s voice was deeper than usual. “My people will arrive in three minutes. Sebastian also received the news. His men are already on their way.”Vivian’s fingers tightened around the phone.“Do you have any news about Sophia?” It was the only thing she cared about.“There was progress in Switzerland. We located the exact place. Local authorities a

Vivian briefly explained Sophia’s situation and her concerns.Leon’s reply was concise: [Send me her name and any known information. I’ll have someone investigate. Stay safe. Do not act alone.]By the time everything was done, the sky already began to lighten. She knew the battle ahead would be far more dangerous than her previous investigation. This was no longer just a fight for the truth. It was also a confrontation with powerful forces that might do anything once pushed into a corner. When it was nine in the morning, several major international media outlets and multiple independent domestic news platforms simultaneously released in-depth investigative reports on Meridian International School and the network of interests behind it.Unlike her previous article, which focused primarily on campus violence, this series of reports went straight for the core. The most explosive revelation was an interview with a source whose voice had been altered for protection. The interviewee c

The young man lowered his voice.“The target is home. Sebastian came by and stayed for approximately eight minutes. They spoke at the door, but the conversation was unclear… Yes, Sebastian has left. The target appears to still be working.”A woman’s voice came through the earpiece, calm and detached.“Keep watching. I want to know who she meets next, where she goes, and what she does.”“Understood.”The door to the fire exit closed quietly. The hallway fell silent again. Yet beneath that silence, countless undercurrents quietly surged.Inside the apartment, Vivian sat at her desk, extracting and organizing key information, cross-referencing it with the evidence she gathered before. All of it was for one person, Sophia Harper. She was the girl she met by chance in England, only to have her mysteriously disappear afterward.During her first year in the UK, Vivian sketched by the River Cam in Cambridge when she met Sophia, who was also traveling alone. The sixteen-year-old girl

Vivian returned to her apartment, closed the door behind her, and placed the folder on the coffee table. She switched on the ceiling light and pulled out the documents inside. It was a thick stack of files. Most of them were in English, with attachments in German and French. She scanned through them quickly, and her expression grew increasingly serious. What Leon gave her was far more than some information. The files contained detailed records of more than a dozen overseas investments made by the Warren family over the past five years, primarily concentrated in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. On the surface, they appeared to be legitimate ventures in real estate development and mineral acquisitions. However, beneath layers of complicated transactions, the funds eventually flowed into several shell companies registered in the British Virgin Islands, which then funneled money into certain special projects.Three of those projects were directly connected to Meridian International

The words “my fiancée” struck the terrace like a thunderclap.Even Mr. Cole could not hide his shock. His lips parted in disbelief. For the first time, the calm and unreadable eyes of Sebastian showed a crack.Vivian picked up where Leon left off. “Mr. Warren, did you still think I did not have enough backing to shake the giant tree you mentioned?”A vein throbbed at Edward’s temple. He looked at Vivian, then at the imposing man standing beside her. Finally, his eyes shifted toward Sebastian. The Hayes family was already troublesome enough. Adding a man like Leon, whose background was even more terrifying…The muscles on his face twitched slightly before he forced out an extremely stiff smile. “Mr. Zane, this was all a misunderstanding. I had no idea Miss Carter was your fiancée. This was truly my oversight. My deepest apologies.”He practically forced the words out through clenched teeth, then shot a sharp glare at the people behind him. “What were you waiting for? Let us go.”
