Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat
Zoe asked, "Xandra, how much older are you compared to Leon?"

I thought for a moment and answered, "Seven years."

"That much?" She widened her eyes, feigning curiosity. "They say a three-year gap is a generational gap nowadays. Don't you two have a wide gap between you, then?"

"Not really," I replied calmly.

"Would his family even approve of someone your age?" Zoe laughed, covering her mouth. "I don't mean you're old or anything. Don't take it the wrong way."

I laughed inwardly. Her provocation didn't irk me at all. It just felt ridiculous.

I set down my cutlery and looked at her with a smile that didn't reach my eyes. "Yeah, I think our age gap is pretty big. But Leon likes me, so what can I do? It's actually kind of troubling."

Zoe's smile faltered. "I still think people should be with someone more or less their own age. It's fine now, but when he's 30 years old and at his peak, you'll be almost 40. If you go out together, people might think you're his mom."

"That's not something you need to worry about," I responded steadily.

Then, I placed a piece of meat onto her plate and smiled. "You should worry more about yourself. You don't have a job or a boyfriend. Are you planning to keep crashing at your cousin's place forever? But I guess if you have enough cousins, you could rotate between them."

Zoe's face darkened instantly.

Leon quickly tried to smooth things over by reaching out to take my plate. "Hey, Xandra. Want another plate of pasta?"

I set my cutlery down and said, "No, I'm full. You two enjoy."

I was a light sleeper. When Leon carefully got out of bed in the middle of the night, I woke up. I lay still in bed, listening as his footsteps quietly moved toward the door before heading out.

A few minutes later, faint sounds of running water came from the bathroom.

I sighed and sat up. I really did like Leon, and I wanted to keep things going with him a little longer. After all, every extra day enjoying a young man's body felt like a bonus to me.

But now that things had reached this point, I couldn't tolerate it anymore.

How he chose to fool around outside was his business. But bringing another woman home was a different story—he was disrupting my life. I didn't want to come home exhausted from work every day just to bicker meaninglessly with some other woman.

I wasn't a lovesick teenage girl anymore. I'd long passed the age when girls fought over a man.

I walked to the bathroom door. Through the narrow gap, I saw two overlapping silhouettes.

Zoe's breathing grew heavier. "Won't that old hag notice you came out? What if she gets mad and breaks up with you?"

Leon laughed in a carefree manner, his wet kisses drowned out by the sound of water. He said, "Relax. She won't leave me."

Zoe sounded a little unhappy. "What do you even like about her?"

"I like how good she is to me," Leon answered her as if he were stating something obvious. "She takes care of me like my mom. I feel comfortable when I'm with her."

"Then, why cheat? Aren't you afraid she'll feel hurt?" Zoe pressed.

"I've offered my youth, haven't I?" Leon replied.

I stood behind the door and listened expressionlessly.

Perhaps people tended to feel a little bit more emotional or sentimental at night. Even though I had already prepared myself mentally, I realized I wasn't as indifferent as I thought at that moment.

After all, I'd been with Leon for three years. There was bound to be some attachment. This was such a pity.

Leon grabbed her waist and bit her shoulder, laughing softly. "Come on. Let's not ruin the mood by talking about that. Stay a few more days. I think this makes it even more exciting…"

I didn't listen any further. I went back to my room and started packing.

I have my own place. I only moved in with Leon to take better care of him.

Over the past six months, I had already been gradually moving my more important things back home. What remained here wasn't important. I didn't need to take them with me.

I took one last look at the blue-and-white couple's pajamas hanging on the balcony, the pile of cartoon mugs on the table, and the two pairs of plush indoor slippers on the floor. One was large, and the other was smaller.

Quietly, I closed the door and left.

Leon lowered his head and spoke in a choked voice, "I feel so awful, Xandra. When I go home, the place is empty. There are traces of you everywhere. There's the coffee machine you bought, the flowers you took care of on the balcony, and the bedding you picked out… "But now, no one uses the coffee machine. It's covered in dust. The flowers on the balcony have withered without anyone watering them. The bed feels cold, as there's only me lying there now. The scent you left behind is fading. "I can't forget you. I really don't know what to do anymore."He got up and knelt in front of me, resting his face on my knees. I felt warmth soaking through my clothes. He pleaded softly, "I've realized what a fool I've been. Don't be so heartless. Don't abandon me, please."I patted his back gently and said softly, "It's too late, Leon."His eyes reddened. "Then, what am I supposed to do? Tell me… What should I do?""That's your problem now," I said, standing up. "You can't have your cake an

Calvin insisted firmly, "I said it's allowed, and we'll do it right now!"…When Zoe showed up, I was in the middle of picking out an outfit for a date with Calvin. She banged loudly on the door. When I opened it, she pointed at me angrily and screeched, "Did you seduce Leon? You two already broke up. Why are you still bothering him?"I was confused. "Are you crazy? When did I ever bother him?""If you didn't, then why is he ignoring me? He's not answering my calls or replying to my messages! You old hag! Are you clinging to him shamelessly because no one else wants you?" Zoe complained, her eyes reddened with anger. She raised her hand to slap me, but I grabbed her wrist. Under her shocked gaze, I slapped her across the face swiftly. Her head snapped to the side, and she tried to rush at me again.I calmly rolled up my sleeves and said, "You might not know this, but I am trained in combat."Zoe immediately backed down, clearly intimidated. However, she didn't stop with her

A few seconds later, the peeling sound stopped. The apple that was now halved was handed to me.Calvin sounded a little annoyed, but there was a hint of helplessness in his tone. "Eat."The doctor said I had passed out due to excessive emotional stress. The hospital discharged me after putting me on observation for a day. When I walked out of my hospital room, I saw Leon outside, leaning against the wall. There were dark circles under his eyes. A layer of stubble had grown on his jaw overnight, and his eyes were bloodshot. It looked like he hadn't slept at all. He had probably been here the whole time. And perhaps because of how guilty he felt, he hadn't dared to enter my room. When he saw me, his expression shifted. He seemed like he wanted to say something, but he didn't say anything in the end.At that point, there was nothing left for me to say. Blame and insults were meaningless. I just wanted him to disappear completely from my life so that I would never have to see him aga

"It's okay. Don't be afraid." Leon patted my back gently and held me tight as he soothed me. "I'm here. Don't be scared."I clutched his shirt tightly, unable to speak. Cold sweat and tears mixed together, soaking into his chest. In my dazed state, Leon became the only thing I could hold on to.He whispered softly in my ear, "Hey, Xandra. Let's get back together, okay? What if you run into something like this again when you're alone? I promise I won't see other women anymore. I'll stay by your side, alright?"His gentle voice felt like some hypnotic spell. In my frightened state, I almost agreed instinctively. But suddenly, a vague thought surfaced in my mind. How could there be such a coincidence? How could it be that the elevator happened to break down when Leon and I were in it?But before I could think it through, the elevator suddenly started moving again. The lights came back on, illuminating the smile on Leon's face with perfect clarity.I froze. The next second, the ele

Leon asked emotionally, "You've forgiven me so many times before. Why can't you give me one more chance this time?"I thought Calvin would leave. He hated having his time wasted. At this hour, he should've been sweating it out in the gym. But he stayed and watched from the side.Suddenly, he spoke up, saying, "Xandra, I used to think you had good taste. But now, I realize you have bad taste in men.""The hell are you butting in for? This has nothing to do with you!" Leon snapped.Calvin smiled indifferently. He gave him one glance, then withdrew his gaze without another word. It was a look of pure disdain, like an adult man looking at a child who was still green.Leon's expression darkened, and he stepped forward. But I quickly stopped him and warned, "Don't make a scene, Leon. It's not possible between us anymore. If you keep bothering me, you're just wasting your time. I don't want to see you again."Leon's eyes widened. He looked at me with a hurt expression, as if he hadn't

I was in agony and about to speak when a voice suddenly came from the side. "Xandra."I snapped my head up. Calvin was walking toward me from not far away. With effortless elegance, he took off the custom suit he was wearing—that was worth about 120 thousand dollars—and draped it over my shoulders like a gentleman."It's so cold. Why are you dressed so lightly?" he asked.I was too stunned to speak or move.My blind date glanced back and forth between the two of us, and his expression soured. "Ms. Lovell, I understand you may be keeping your options open. But isn't this a bit too much? If you're already seeing someone, why are you still coming on blind dates?"Before I could explain, he stormed off angrily. I sighed and pulled Calvin's jacket tighter around me.I asked, "What are you doing, Mr. Greene?"The smile on his face faded slightly. Instead of answering, he asked, "Did you take the day off just to go on a date with someone like that?"I said helplessly, "That's just h
