CHAPTER SIX: COLLEGE DARE 4

Silence fell and the lights in the hallway flickered.

Following the events of the previous dare, everyone waited, staring at me.

"Your turn, Ava," Jace responded wearing the same arrogant smile that had annoyed me from the beginning.

With my heart hammering like a drum across my ribs, I inhaled deeply. Bold dares were nothing new to me, but this one was personal. Each round had been more intense, more dangerous, and hotter. The conflict between us? Now it's unbearable. Everyone knew we were on top of a volcano.

He took a step towards us, bringing our bodies almost to each other.

"Truth or dare?"

"Dare," I murmured in a faint voice.

The others held their breath. Wicked rage sparkled in Jace's eyes. He muttered, "I dare you to accompany me to the rooftop."

Cheers, mock surprise, and laughter broke out from the throng. My legs, however, were already in motion.

There was a nervous stillness on our way up in the lift. He avoided looking at me. I kept my eyes off of him. However, the air between us? Charged.

Although our fingertips accidentally touched once, the electricity that resulted from that contact was anything but.

The city lights spilt across us like a stage as we arrived at the rooftop. The fire that was burning inside of me was not put out by the cool night air.

"So?...this part of the dare, I leaned against the railing and said… What am I doing up here, exactly?

Jace approached me cautiously, like a predator. "Anything you desire."

I took a deep breath.

He continued in a quiet, earnest voice, "Say the word, and I'll stop." However, I believe you came up here in the hopes that I wouldn't.

I stared into his eyes while the wind pulled at my hair. I detested my desire for him. I detested the way his voice made my body tingle. Above all, though, I hated the idea of acting as though I didn't want this.

I whispered "I'm not afraid."

He stepped forward till his chest touched mine and murmured, "Good." "Then give up acting."

His mouth then slammed into mine. At first, it was rough, raw and hungry—but it soon softened into something more profound. Like two individuals attempting to commit every flavour, sound, and breath to memory.

My head fell back as his hands gripped my jaw, and the kiss grew more intense. His heartbeat matched mine, rapid and urgent. We only separated for breath, and even then, our foreheads remained glued together.

His voice was scratchy as he murmured, "This isn't just a dare anymore."

"I understand," I answered.

He tasted me as if he had been famished as he leaned in more slowly this time. He softly forced me against the stairway wall while I held on to his shirt. There was urgency and passion, but below it all was something horrifyingly real.

He withdrew, stroking my face with his thumb. "We may pause right here. Or—

"Don't stop," I hurriedly urged.

And that was all he required.

In a series of fast moves and kisses, we took off our clothes. As our bodies clashed in a tangle of heat and need, the night sky above us grew endlessly. I wanted him to be everywhere, and he was. Every contact was painful. We both couldn't take back the promises we made with each gulp.

We lay side by side on a makeshift blanket of jackets once it was over, gazing up at the sky as if we were two strangers who had just exploded together.

However, we were no longer strangers. Jackson looked around. "That was meant to be a challenge."

"It was," I exclaimed, panting.

"But now," he said, pausing. "I believe it's the start of something I can't make light of."

I grinned, warm and exhausted.

"Perhaps you should choose "truth" the next time."

With a quiet chuckle, he grabbed my hand. "All right.

Truth? With my heart pounding, I turned to look at him.

"Ava, I'm falling for you."

And there was no need for the dare this time. Because the truth? It had already taken place.

CHAPTER THREE HerThe moment my phone started vibrating, I knew something wasn't right. I disregarded it at first. With my legs tucked under me and a glass of wine loosely in my palm, I was curled up on Adrian's couch. Beyond the windows, the city shone with lights that flickered like living things. With his sleeves rolled up and his jacket off, Adrian stood close to the window in the calm, personal, and perilous manner of a guy who belonged in such situations. However, the buzzing persisted. Adrian took a quick look. "You ought to look into that." After a moment of hesitation, I opened my phone. Three messages. Everything comes from Lina.Have you seen this? Tell me this isn't about you, please. Give me a call. Right now. My stomach fell. I clicked on the link she sent. Cruel and audacious, a headline gazed back at me: A NEW OBSESSION OR THE NEXT SCANDAL: ADRIAN VALE SPOTTED WITH A MYSTERY WOMAN? Beneath it was a picture. Hazy, captured from the other side of the road, but un

CHAPTER TWO AdrianAfter leaving a room, I usually don't think about other people. Really, that's the trick. Grin. Take part. Don't reveal too much, but leave just enough to be remembered. In absence, desire flourishes. Before the discussions, before my status, before people began projecting their desires onto me as if it were their right, I discovered that. However, her? She went home with me.Not in a physical sense. God, no. That would’ve been easy. This was more dire—a quiet kind of encroachment. The kind that creeps into your mind when you're brushing your teeth, gazing out over the city lights, or when the apartment is too quiet and your mind won't cooperate. Her gaze had been too fixed on mine. The majority of individuals turn away initially. She didn't. She stood out only for that. I grabbed myself a drink that I didn't need and waited at the window with my tie undone and my jacket thrown away. Beneath me, the city was alive, vibrant, and unconcerned. It grounded me norm

CHAPTER ONE I could tell something had changed by the time Adrian Vale came in. Even before I saw him, I could sense the thickening of the air and the little pause in discussion to give him room. Not quiet. Never be silent. Instead of calming a room, a man like Adrian rearranged it. Individuals learn in different ways. Grins became more intense. Eyes trailed behind. The energy shifted as I stood close to the bar, feigning to pay attention to a conversation that I had psychologically zoned out five minutes prior. It was faint but clearly noticeable. Similar to the instant before lightning strikes, every nerve knew that something was about to happen even if there was no sound yet."He's here," someone whispered behind me. There was no need for a name. Adrian Vale didn't need to be introduced. No more. I turned slowly, reminding myself not to stand out or join them. I would peruse the articles, watched the interviews. He was adored by the late-night hosts, whose gags consistently

CHAPTER SIXA faint sound fell from my mouth before I could stop it. His hand clenched just a little.“There it is,” he mumbled. “That sound.” I took a swallow. "You make it difficult not to." "Excellent." His voice sank. "Well, I do not want you to make an attempt." His mouth hovered just next to my ear, not quite touching it, as he leaned in. His restraint was seductive; it was the controlled, blazing patience of an older man, intensified by need. He said, "You don't rush something like this." "You allowed it to grow." His fingers moved slowly and leisurely along my hips and waist, pausing just shy of the spot where I most wanted him. It was a beautiful denial. Without my brain's consent, my body pressed back against him.Marcus had observed. He was always perceptive. His lips barely touched the arc of my neck; they were more of a promise than a kiss. I shuddered violently. "Sensitive," he murmured with satisfaction. "I wondered." Then I looked up at him. I was astounded by

CHAPTER FIVE His voice grew gruff as he replied, "I've wanted this." "Longer than I ought to acknowledge." "You're not alone," I exhaled. His fingers spread with an instinctive possessiveness that sent shivers down my spine as his hand went to my waist. Gently yet irresistibly, he drew me in closer. "Tell me," he whispered. "Say it so I believe I'm not dreaming.” I muttered, "I want you." "It scares me how much I want you." Marcus took a slow, low breath that was simultaneously painful and hungry. He then gave me a kiss. It wasn't hurried. It wasn't crazy. It was painfully slow, as if he wanted to savour each moment. His lips touched mine once, twice, testing and teasing, building the suspense until my breath broke in a shaky cry. Then he intensified the kiss, which was firm and warm, the ideal ratio of hunger to gentleness. Curling my fingers into his shirt, I sank into him, scared of how much I wanted more. Now, with both hands on my waist, he seemed to be direct

CHAPTER FOURHe carried me from the chair, leading me gently and slowly until I was standing in between his legs; his hands slid along my thighs, cosy yet strong, holding me as though he'd been craving this for far too long; his fingers traced the curve of my back; I shivered, pressing closer; he whispered into my hair, "Tell me if you want me to stop." "I won't," I breathed; he let out a low sound, something like surrender; his hands cupped my hips, mine threaded into his hair; we shared a long, warm kiss that my stomach began to heat up. Between us, desire hummed like electricity. Everything else vanished. However, it wasn't rejection when he withdrew. Control was what it was, just barely enough. He leaned his forehead against mine and whispered, "This is not how I want this night to go." "Not hurried. Not negligent. You are worthy of more than that. I shut my eyes. "Ethan—" He planted a sweet, hurting kiss on my face and then my jaw.His voice trembled with control a
