CHAPTER SIX: COLLEGE DARE 4

Silence fell and the lights in the hallway flickered.

Following the events of the previous dare, everyone waited, staring at me.

"Your turn, Ava," Jace responded wearing the same arrogant smile that had annoyed me from the beginning.

With my heart hammering like a drum across my ribs, I inhaled deeply. Bold dares were nothing new to me, but this one was personal. Each round had been more intense, more dangerous, and hotter. The conflict between us? Now it's unbearable. Everyone knew we were on top of a volcano.

He took a step towards us, bringing our bodies almost to each other.

"Truth or dare?"

"Dare," I murmured in a faint voice.

The others held their breath. Wicked rage sparkled in Jace's eyes. He muttered, "I dare you to accompany me to the rooftop."

Cheers, mock surprise, and laughter broke out from the throng. My legs, however, were already in motion.

There was a nervous stillness on our way up in the lift. He avoided looking at me. I kept my eyes off of him. However, the air between us? Charged.

Although our fingertips accidentally touched once, the electricity that resulted from that contact was anything but.

The city lights spilt across us like a stage as we arrived at the rooftop. The fire that was burning inside of me was not put out by the cool night air.

"So?...this part of the dare, I leaned against the railing and said… What am I doing up here, exactly?

Jace approached me cautiously, like a predator. "Anything you desire."

I took a deep breath.

He continued in a quiet, earnest voice, "Say the word, and I'll stop." However, I believe you came up here in the hopes that I wouldn't.

I stared into his eyes while the wind pulled at my hair. I detested my desire for him. I detested the way his voice made my body tingle. Above all, though, I hated the idea of acting as though I didn't want this.

I whispered "I'm not afraid."

He stepped forward till his chest touched mine and murmured, "Good." "Then give up acting."

His mouth then slammed into mine. At first, it was rough, raw and hungry—but it soon softened into something more profound. Like two individuals attempting to commit every flavour, sound, and breath to memory.

My head fell back as his hands gripped my jaw, and the kiss grew more intense. His heartbeat matched mine, rapid and urgent. We only separated for breath, and even then, our foreheads remained glued together.

His voice was scratchy as he murmured, "This isn't just a dare anymore."

"I understand," I answered.

He tasted me as if he had been famished as he leaned in more slowly this time. He softly forced me against the stairway wall while I held on to his shirt. There was urgency and passion, but below it all was something horrifyingly real.

He withdrew, stroking my face with his thumb. "We may pause right here. Or—

"Don't stop," I hurriedly urged.

And that was all he required.

In a series of fast moves and kisses, we took off our clothes. As our bodies clashed in a tangle of heat and need, the night sky above us grew endlessly. I wanted him to be everywhere, and he was. Every contact was painful. We both couldn't take back the promises we made with each gulp.

We lay side by side on a makeshift blanket of jackets once it was over, gazing up at the sky as if we were two strangers who had just exploded together.

However, we were no longer strangers. Jackson looked around. "That was meant to be a challenge."

"It was," I exclaimed, panting.

"But now," he said, pausing. "I believe it's the start of something I can't make light of."

I grinned, warm and exhausted.

"Perhaps you should choose "truth" the next time."

With a quiet chuckle, he grabbed my hand. "All right.

Truth? With my heart pounding, I turned to look at him.

"Ava, I'm falling for you."

And there was no need for the dare this time. Because the truth? It had already taken place.

CHAPTER THREE At last, they surrender. The quiet between us had taken on a life of its own. The night in the rain, the evening Lena kissed me, the night my best friend tasted like warmth and pity the night everything went crazy was a week later. A week of half-written apologies, ignored messages, and lengthy, painful pauses during which I questioned whether I had dreamed everything. She was missed. Not in the intimate, informal manner of a buddy. But in a deep, throbbing hunger that rendered sleep seem futile. When she did text at last: Come on over. We must speak. In less than fifteen minutes, my pulse was racing, my palms were warm, and I felt as though I was entering an irrevocable situation when I arrived at her apartment door. And I was—because, despite my fear, I secretly desired whatever was beyond. Before I could knock, the door opened. Lena remained still. sloppy dark hair. Her eyes were puffy, as if she hadn't slept. CHAPTER TWO We met according to the note and what was written in it. It seemed as though the world had ceased to revolve. She continued to kiss me. The universe was still for a brief, breathless minute. There was no sound, no thinking, no heartbeat—just the taste of her mouth against mine, delicate and trembling, like a secret neither of us intended to share. Lena. My best friend. When I eventually drew away, our foreheads still locked together, her breath shuddered against my lips. Stormy, startled, and glimmering with something I couldn't identify, her eyes were wide. Perhaps the searing sensation in my chest was the same thing. They became so entangled that I was unable to distinguish between them. "Tell me I didn't just do that," I said in a tremulous murmur. Her breath caught. "You didn't." “But I did.” "Yes," she said, her gaze returning to my mouth. “You did.” Between us, there was a humming, burning silence that was heavy with all that was unsaid. The room sm

Chapter OneEven at midnight, the city hums, whispers, and sparkles, never truly sleeping. I could see the hazy reflections of car lights gliding across streets slippery with rain from the balcony of my flat. On the railing, my wine glass was half-empty, with condensation forming at the bottom. I should have been relaxing after a demanding week, but all I could think about was her.Lena.She was the next-door resident. My closest friend, my best buddy since college, and the one particular person who could understand me without using words. Last year, we had relocated into the same building, but in different flats on the same level. Perhaps it was fate, but it seemed safe and convenient. But for some reason, it didn't feel safe at all lately. Before I proceeded to turn to look at her, I heard a gentle knock on my door. Her signature is three soft taps. Lena was standing barefoot, her hair wet from the rain, her jacket slung loosely over one of her shoulders, and a smile tu

Chapter ThreeThat night, rain pattered quietly on the dorm windows, a subdued cadence that complemented Lana's steady heartbeat. It was quiet on campus, the kind of silence that precedes tests and farewells. Her laptop was open as she sat on her bed, idly going over her notes. Her gaze, however, strayed to her phone every few minutes. Not a message. No phone call. Since their last meal two nights ago, Ethan has not been in contact. He was simply busy, she reminded herself. However, the quiet was heavier than it ought to be. Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.Ethan was standing there when she opened it, soaked from the rain, with a sheepish expression on his face and a sweater clinging to his shoulders. "I forgot my umbrella." Lana felt a jolt in her heart. "You should have texted me." With a shrug, he entered. "It would have destroyed the surprise." Trying not to smile, she gave him a towel from her desk. "You appear insane." "Very attract

Chapter TwoCompared to the night's creak, the rooftop lights gave out a little buzz. Ethan's words echoed in the air like a challenge Lana wasn't sure how to respond to, and she could still feel his warmth in her fingers. "Go for it," she had said. However, her confidence seemed to have been taken by the wind now that she was present there, just inches from him. With a steady, amused stare, Ethan leaned backwards against the railing. "So," he said nonchalantly, "what are you going to do next, naughty girl?" Lana's forehead raised. "You think I've got one." He remarked, "Oh, you always have one." "You prefer to act as though you don't.”She crossed her arms. "Perhaps I'm reserving it for the ideal time." He laughed. "You mean when you believe it will surprise me the most?" "Exactly." Like a dance that none of them wanted to stop, their banter flowed effortlessly. Below them, cars swerved between streets like shimmering insects as the city lights twinkled. Lana

Chapter OneEverything was bathed in a honey-gold light as the late afternoon sun streamed through the high windows of the campus café at Crawford University. The aroma of freshly baked coffee beans permeated the air while calm music hummed in the background. Pretending to study her notes, Lana sat legs crossed on the couch by the corner, swirling her iced latte with a straw. She was waiting, not actually studying. Awaiting his arrival. Ethan. A senior majoring in psychology. He had black hair, broad shoulders, and a serene confidence that turned heads wherever he went. Not only was he her partner, but he was also her quiet chaos and favourite diversion. He often referred to her as his "naughty girl," a name that, even though he only used it in whispers when they were by themselves, always made her pulse beat a beat. "You're still acting like you're studying?" From behind her, Ethan's booming voice could be heard. After a slight start, Lana looked up to discover him st
