Chapter 37

Twenty minutes since we'd gone down into what looked like an old subway tunnel, and I was still in shock.

The underground racing place stretched out in front of me like something from a crazy dream. The concrete walls were covered in street arts, neon lights everywhere, and the air smelled like burning rubber and gas.

Tristan had brought me to his secret world, and I couldn't tell if I was scared or excited.

This track used to be train tunnels. Someone had turned them into this twisting raceway that went under the city.

There were makeshift bleachers along the walls, packed with people I could barely see through all the cigarette smoke. Bikers in leather, rich people in fancy clothes, and everything in between. They were all here for the same thing, danger and speed.

I watched Tristan get ready for his race. He moved like he'd done this a million times before. He checked his bike the same way he worked on customer bikes at the garage, his hands going over every part.

  • THE BIKER ALPHA WHO BECAME MY SECOND CHANCE MATE   41 BUT NO MATTER HOW STUPID IT WAS, I'M SURE HE WOULDN'T HOLD YOU TO IT.

Chapter 42"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," he said, looking genuinely apologetic.I immediately turned my gaze away from him, staring at anything and everything except his face. The counter. The cabinets. The coffee maker. Anywhere but those eyes that had been looking at me so intensely last night."It's okay, just my reflexes," I said quickly, trying to sound normal and probably failing completely."How was your night?" he asked, and his voice sounded perfectly casual, like nothing had happened between us at all."Fine. Fine," I said way too quickly, trying to look busy with anything I could find. There was a pause, and then he asked, "What are you doing?"My heart stopped completely. This was it. He was going to bring up the kiss. He was going to ask me what the hell I thought I was doing yesterday. Or maybe say, what happened yesterday was inappropriate and that we needed to pretend it never happened. What was I supposed to say? That I'd temporarily lost my mind?I'm going to

  • THE BIKER ALPHA WHO BECAME MY SECOND CHANCE MATE   41 YOU SHOULD TRY SEDUCING HIM

Chapter 41Tristan didn't respond to my kiss. He just sat there like a statue, completely frozen. That's when the reality of what I'd done crashed over me like ice water. What am I doing?I jerked away from him as if his lips had burned me. "I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry. That was a mistake," I blurted out, already scrambling to my feet."Ath..." he started, but I didn't stick around to hear whatever he was going to say. I bolted up the stairs like the house was on fire, taking the steps two at a time.I shut my bedroom door behind me with more force than necessary and leaned my back against it, sliding down until I was sitting on the floor. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might explode right out of my chest."Oh my God! What did I just do? What have I done?" I covered my face with both hands, still unable to believe what had just happened.I'd kissed Tristan. On the lips. While he was telling me about losing his mate and unborn child. What kind of person does that?Nice one,

  • THE BIKER ALPHA WHO BECAME MY SECOND CHANCE MATE   40 I LEANED FORWARD AND PRESSED MY LIPS TO HIS

Chapter 40On a normal day, we would have laughed at his joke but right now, the raw honesty in his voice cut through me like a blade. That I had to press my lips together to keep myself from crying, from making this about my own guilt when he was finally opening up about his deepest wounds."Jess saved me," he said simply. "She helped me see that life could be more than the darkness I was drowning in. She was there when I needed someone most. She loved me, and I..." He paused, swallowing hard. "I loved her just as much."Something sharp lodged in my throat, making it hard to breathe. The tears I'd been fighting began building behind my eyes like storm, but I refused to let them fall. This wasn't about me. This was about honoring the woman who'd been there for him when his family couldn't be."After a year together, we got married."The words hits me like wave, sending ripples of realization through me. Four years ago. He'd already found love and made a commitment while I was still in

  • THE BIKER ALPHA WHO BECAME MY SECOND CHANCE MATE   39 ANYTHING TO MAKE THE OUTSIDE MATCH WHAT I FELT INSIDE

Chapter 39When we got home, the house felt different somehow, heavier with unspoken truths, charged with secrets about to be shared. So instead of heading upstairs to our separate rooms like we usually did, Tristan and I gravitated toward the living room.Tristan settled onto one end of the sectional couch, his long frame folding with that fluid grace he'd always possessed. I took the opposite end, tucking my legs beneath me and wrapping my arms around my knees like armor against whatever was coming. The silence stretched between us, not uncomfortable exactly, but weighted with anticipation. I could feel him gathering his thoughts, choosing his words carefully the way he always did when something truly mattered to him.My heart hammered against my ribs as I waited, because deep down I knew what this conversation would be about. The questions that had been eating at me since I'd learned about Jess, since I'd knelt beside her grave and felt the crushing weight of everything I hadn't k

  • THE BIKER ALPHA WHO BECAME MY SECOND CHANCE MATE   38 I THINK I'M GOING CRAZY

Chapter 38With fifty yards to go, Tristan was trapped. No room to move, no space to speed up, boxed in by two guys who would gladly crash into him to win.I could feel my heart beating around my ribcage, my eyes never leaving him. My ears sharp to ever sound he made, like I heart would stop if I heard any sound that I shouldn't hear.I closed my eyes, but opened them immediately. If Tristan was going to hurt himself then I have to see and hear it happen. But then, he did the impossible.Like a flash, he was standing on his bike again, but this time he let go with one hand. Still controlling his bike with his left hand, still perfectly balanced at almost a hundred miles per hour, he used his right arm to steady himself as he leaned forward.I held my as I watched him do the most impossible thing in the human world. The move was so unexpected that both other riders hesitated for just a split second. It was enough.Tristan's bike shot forward and he crossed the finish line a full bike l
