Three days later, I was still at Blackwood Tech and hadn't gotten fired yet, which felt like a miracle. Every day was the same, Aiden giving me impossible tasks, me finishing them and him looking at me like he was trying to solve a puzzle that didn’t make sense. The tension between us kept growing until I felt like I couldn’t breathe around him. Tonight was different, though, because Aiden asked me to stay late again. This time, he said we would work together on a presentation for a client meeting tomorrow. When everyone else had left and the office grew dark and quiet, I walked into his office with my laptop and sat in the chair across from his desk. "We need to go through these projections," Aiden said, sliding a stack of papers across the desk. I took them, and our fingers brushed for just a second. Electricity shot up my arm, and I pulled my hand back too fast. "Okay," I said, looking down at the papers because I couldn’t look at him. We started working, and the hours went by with only the sound of typing and the occasional shuffle of papers. "Here," Aiden said, holding out another document. I reached for it, and our hands touched again. This time, neither of us pulled away right away. I looked up, and he was staring at me with an expression I couldn’t read. "Thanks," I said as I took the paper. He cleared his throat and went back to his computer. This kept happening over and over. Every time we passed papers, our hands touched, and each time the air grew thicker. I felt like I was going crazy because I didn’t know if he was doing it on purpose or if I was imagining things. "Elliot," Aiden said, and I looked up. He was watching me again. "Yes," I said. He leaned back in his chair. "Why did you take this job?" he asked. The question caught me off guard. "I needed work," I said, the easiest answer but he shook his head. "No, I mean why this job," he said, gesturing around the office. "You could work anywhere with your skills, so why here?" I didn’t know what to say because the truth was complicated. "I wanted a challenge," I said, which was partly true. He kept staring at me. "We should keep working," Aiden said finally. I nodded, and we went back to the presentation, but something had changed between us. The air felt different, less tense, more like two people working together instead of boss and assistant. "This section doesn’t make sense," I said, pointing to a chart on my screen. Aiden got up, came around the desk, stood behind my chair, and leaned over to look at my laptop. I could feel the heat of his body and smell his cologne. My brain stopped working. "Where?" he asked. I pointed at the screen. He leaned in closer, his arm brushing my shoulder, and I forgot how to breathe. "Oh, I see," he said. He reached over and took my mouse, his hand covering mine for a second. I felt my face get hot. "It should be like this," he said, fixing the chart, but he didn’t step back. Instead, he stayed close, leaning over me, his hand still on the mouse covering mine. I could feel his breath on my neck, and my whole body tensed. “Do you see it now?” His voice was lower, closer to my ear. I nodded because I couldn’t find my voice. “Elliot,” he said, and the way he said my name made something twist deep in my stomach. I turned my head to look at him. We froze and neither of us moved. I could see every detail of his face: the gold flecks in his blue eyes, the small scar above his eyebrow I’d never noticed before. “This is a bad idea,” he said, but he didn’t pull away. I knew he meant whatever was happening between us right now. “I know,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. His hand remained on mine, warm and steady. Then Aiden moved. I thought he would step back, but instead, he brought his other hand to my face. His fingers were gentle, careful, as if I might break. Unconsciously, I leaned into his touch. “Tell me to stop,” he said, his thumb brushing my cheekbone softly. My eyes fluttered closed for just a second. “I….” I started, unsure what to say, but it didn’t matter. Aiden leaned in and pressed his lips to mine. My mind went blank. The kiss was soft at first,as if he was testing me. But I didn’t pull away. Instead, I turned in my chair and reached up, resting my hand on the back of his neck, kissing him back. His hand slid from my face into my hair, tilting my head back, and I felt like I was drowning in the best way possible. I stood up without breaking the kiss. Aiden backed against his desk, trapping me close. His hands gripped my waist, pulling me in tighter. I could feel his racing heart against my chest, matching mine beat for beat. “Elliot,” he breathed against my mouth, his voice rough and desperate. I’d never heard him like that before. His hands roamed everywhere, in my hair, along my back, down my thighs. I couldn’t think of anything except how good it felt, how much I wanted more. “Aiden,” I breathed, not sure what I was asking for. He seemed to understand and kissed down my neck. I tilted my head back to give him more room. Then his phone rang. We both froze. Reality crashed in, and panic flashed across his face. “I……” he started, stepping back and running a hand through his hair, making it messy. “That shouldn’t have happened,” he admitted, and my chest tightened because he was right, but it still hurt to hear it. “Okay,” I said, sliding off the desk and trying to fix my shirt and hair. “I’m sorry,” he said, but I shook my head. “It’s fine,” I said, even though it wasn’t. “Maybe I should go,” I said. He nodded but looked like he wanted to say more. “Yeah,” he agreed. I grabbed my laptop and bag and walked to the door. “Elliot, wait,” he called. I stopped but didn’t turn, afraid of what I might see in his face. “This can’t happen again,” he said, and something broke inside me.Elliot's Pov I did not respond because I did not know what else to say. Liam meant well but his kind of help always came with strings attached. He wanted to protect me but he also wanted to control me and I was done being controlled by anyone. The city lights appeared in the distance and I felt a mix of fear and determination. I was going back to the place that fired me and the place where everyone thought I was either a criminal or a victim. I did not know which was worse. "Where exactly do you want to go?" the driver asked as we entered the city. "Drop me at the Blackwood Tech main building," I said. "At this hour?" the driver asked. "It will be closed." "I know," I said. "Just drop me there." The driver shrugged again and drove through the empty streets. At two in the morning the city looked different. Quieter and darker and almost peaceful. A few people walked on the sidewalks and some bars were still open but most places were closed. We pulled up in front of Black
Elliot's Pov I sat on my bed watching the clock on the wall tick past nine and then ten and then eleven. The house was finally getting quiet as everyone went to their rooms. I heard James walk past my door and stop for a second before continuing down the hallway. He was checking to make sure I was still here. I was still here but not for long. At midnight I got up and pulled a small bag out from under my bed. I had packed it earlier with just the basics because I did not need much. A change of clothes and my wallet and my phone charger and the glass paperweight Aiden gave me. I did not know why I packed that last thing but I could not leave it behind. I changed into dark clothes so I would be harder to see and put on my sneakers. Then I sat on the edge of my bed and waited another thirty minutes to make sure everyone was really asleep. The house was silent except for the usual creaking sounds old houses make. I stood up and grabbed my bag and walked to my bedroom door. I opened i
Aiden's Pov I sat in the chair against the wall and tried to make myself invisible. The board meeting room felt too small and too hot and every person in here was staring at me like I did not belong. Maybe I did not belong anymore but Marcus said I should come so I came. Richard sat at the head of the table looking calm and in control like always. The board members filled the other seats and they all had their laptops open and their serious faces on. This was going to be bad and I could feel it. The forensic accountant stood up and started her presentation. She showed spreadsheets and transaction records and talked about offshore accounts. Every word she said made the evidence against Vivian stronger and I should have felt good about that but I just felt tired. Then Vivian walked in and everyone stopped talking. She wore a gray suit and her hair was perfect and her makeup covered the fact that she looked exhausted. She sat down across from Richard and put her briefcase on the tabl
Vivian's Pov I stood in my apartment staring at the folder on my kitchen counter and my hands would not stop shaking. The fake evidence sat inside waiting for me to use it and I had been staring at it for twenty minutes trying to convince myself this was the right thing to do. It was not the right thing and I knew that but I was out of options. My phone rang and I jumped because I had been so focused on the folder. I looked at the screen and saw Richard's name. My stomach twisted but I answered anyway. "Hello," I said and tried to sound confident. "Vivian," Richard said and his voice was cold. "The board meeting starts in one hour. You need to be there." "I know," I said. "I will be there." "Come ready to explain yourself," Richard said. "The forensic accountants have found more evidence and it does not look good for you." "I can explain everything," I said even though I could not. "You better," Richard said. "Because if you cannot then you are finished and I cannot help you
Elliot's PovI sat on my bed staring at the wall and counting the flowers on the wallpaper. There were forty three of them and I had counted them five times already because I had nothing else to do. My room felt smaller than I remembered and the air was too thick and I could not breathe right. It had been two days since James brought me back here and I had barely left this room. I ate meals alone and ignored everyone who tried to talk to me and spent most of my time looking out the window at the gates that kept me trapped.Someone knocked on the door and I did not answer because I knew who it was. The door opened anyway and Liam walked in wearing another perfect suit. He always wore suits even at home like he was ready for a business meeting at any second."Dad wants you at dinner tonight," Liam said and closed the door behind him.I kept staring at the wall. "No.""It was not a question," Liam said."I do not care," I said and finally looked at him. "I do not want to sit at that tabl
Aiden's Pov Maya finished her coffee and stood up. "I have to get to a meeting but I will let you know if I find anything." "Okay," I said. She started to walk away but then stopped and turned back. "Aiden?" "Yeah?" I said. "I am glad you came in today," Maya said. "It means you have not given up yet." I did not know how to respond to that so I just nodded. She smiled and then walked away toward the meeting rooms. I turned back to my laptop and pulled up my email again. The message from Marcus was still open and I read it one more time. Someone had sent new evidence against Vivian overnight and that evidence was helping to clear the investigation. I clicked on the attachments in the email and started looking through them. Financial documents and transaction records and emails that showed Vivian moving money from company accounts to offshore accounts. It was all very detailed and very damning. But something felt off about it. I zoomed in on one of the bank statements and stud
Elliot's POV I caught up to Aiden in his office where he was throwing things into a cardboard box. Files and photos and awards he had earned over the years all getting tossed in without any care. His hands were shaking but his face was stone. "Aiden," I said from the doorway. He didn't look up.
Vivian's POV I walked into Richard Blackwood's office at exactly eleven thirty carrying my leather folder with all the information I needed to destroy his son. His secretary tried to stop me but Richard waved her away and told her to close the door behind her. "You're early," Richard said from be

Aiden's Pov I stood outside Blackwood Tech at seven in the morning and stared up at the building that used to be mine. The sun was just coming up and the glass windows reflected the orange sky and it would have looked beautiful if I did not feel so hollow inside. Security should have stopped me f
