"Going to answer your phone anytime, or do I have to send a message via pigeon?

The line crackled out Kattie's voice in forced brightness, threaded with static and the unmistakable edge of something she didn't want me to hear.

I pressed the phone tighter to my ear and glanced at the clock above the kitchen sink. It was almost 10:30 p.m. Ethan had been in bed for over an hour, and I’d just sat down to go over some reports Ms. Morris had forwarded me for extra training.

"You're the one who was gone for three weeks," I said, attempting to keep my voice breezy. "I thought you were off to be in a cult or finally escaped with that reggae dancer guy at the grocery store."

Kattie laughed, but it was strained. "Please. He couldn't even spell his own name."

"And Rico can?" I asked, my tone sharper than I intended.

There was a silence.

"Wow," she said flatly. "Didn't even call to ask how I was before showing up for my man.

I rubbed a hand over my forehead. "That's not what I meant. I just… I had

"Mind if I take a seat?"I'd been gazing down at my half-empty plate of roasted chicken and steamed carrots, taken aback by the familiar voice. Lucas Knight was already sitting halfway into the chair beside me, ignoring the three empty seats across the round table. I blinked."There are literally ten other seats, Lucas," he said, and I tried to remain nonchalant.He. He. That same smooth smile that could. He. "But this is the only one besides you."I rolled my eyes and pierced the carrots with my fork. "Flattery doesn't fill my coffee, you know.""I'd go get you a new cup, but you'd say I'm manipulative.""Because you are," I snapped back, smirking before I could stop myself. He lifted his arms in pretended capitulation. "Guilty. But only when it leads me closer to good people."---It was the third in-office Wattbridge event in two months in which Lucas and I had overlapped—"overlapped" being a generous term for how he never appeared to be more than an arm's length away. Holiday lunc

"Do you always retreat down the back hallway when the crowd disperses, or is this reserved for me?"I turned around, startled, ready to let the box of excess name tags I had been sorting drop to the floor. Lucas Knight was against the wall, his hand in his pocket and the other holding a half-full water bottle. His smile was natural, but his eyes, black and stubborn, gripped me like he knew more already than I was willing to share."Not for you, certainly," I replied, sliding the box to my hip. "This is where I get away from the people who inquire of me how I 'became so skilled at logistics.'"He chuckled. "I imagine I can hazard a guess. They speak as if it's some miracle that a woman under thirty with a spine can organize a seating chart."I gave him a deadpan look. "You've met our investor board, then.""Alas."Lucas stepped nearer, not in my way. He wore cologne that was clean-scented, woody, and enormously costly that lingered between us. He looked too calm for a man with five ass

"Excuse me, are those name tags alphabetized by company or by speaker?"I looked up from the registration table, Sharpie marker still open in my hand. The man standing in front of me didn't look like the kind of guy who needed a name tag. He was the kind of guy you remembered—clean-cut but kind-faced, with warm-coffee-brown skin and long, wild curls pulled in a half-finished knot. He had on a navy-blue blazer that probably cost more than my rent, but his smile was approachable, almost boyish.I coughed and smiled politely. "By speaker. Color-coded by panel."He smiled. "Efficient. Someone thought this through.""That someone was me," I replied, putting the cap back on the Sharpie with a firm twist."Well, Ms.?""Carter. Sophie Carter.""Ms. Carter," he said, his voice smooth as warm silk. "Remind me to compliment the person who hired you. This is the most organized I've seen this place since Dad started doing these events."That word—Dad—hit with a thud in my chest. I tried not to rea

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET SON: BETRAYAL AND BLOODLINE   Chapter 19: A WARNING NEEDED

"Yo, you Sophie?"The knock had been forceful and sharp, like a fist attempting to smash the door. It was not long past seven on a Thursday morning. I'd just kissed Ethan farewell at the bus stop and was halfway through my cold tea when the voice cut through the quiet.I peeped through the peephole, thudding heart against my ribs.He was standing there. Rico.I hadn't needed to ask who he was. Kattie had shown me a blurry selfie of them both once, him displaying wads of cash and her half-grinning like she was attempting to convince herself it was okay.He was just as I'd pictured—tall, broad shoulders swathed in a knockoff designer jacket, gold chain shining in sunlight. But it wasn't the attire that made me stop. It was the eyes. Cold. Calculating.I opened the door just enough to block off the inside of the apartment."I'm Sophie," I said cautiously. "What do you want?"He smiled, his gaze surveying me with the arrogance of someone who'd always received what they desired."So you're

"Is Auntie Kattie mad at me?"Ethan's remark brought me up short, spoon hovering above a pot of bubbling tomato stew. I blinked the steam rising around us from my eyes and turned to look at him, where he sat at the table, pencil in one hand and a sheet of math problems in the other."No, baby," I said softly, laying down the spoon. "Why would you say that?"He shrugged, peering down at his paper. "She doesn't come by anymore. She used to pick me up from school sometimes. Now she doesn't even call. Did I do something wrong?"I dried my hands and moved to him, kneeling beside his chair. "Hey. Look at me."He looked around, his brown eyes weighed down with something more than ten-year-olds should have to carry. You didn't do anything bad," I said to him, brushing a wayward curl away from his forehead. "Grown-up things just. Do that sometimes."He nodded slowly, still not getting it, but willing to believe me."I miss her," he breathed. So did I.---I saw Kattie last five days.It was la
