JAMES

“Whatever it is you are hiding, just know that I would still love you no matter what.” Those words kept playing over and over again.

Stella… she had no idea what that promise meant. And if she ever found out about all this, she’d hate me.

I got out of the car and headed toward Don’s hostel room. When I was close, I saw two huge guys standing in front of the door.

It wasn’t odd, but the way they looked at me said everything.

“I’m sorry, Don isn’t seeing anyone now,” the one on the right spoke.

“I’m not just anybody,” I replied coldly.

“Well, you can’t—”

“I will break your jaw if I am not allowed to see Don. Now.” I said it so calmly.

The one on the right chuckled. He clearly thought I was bluffing.

Big mistake. I never bluff.

Before he could blink, I swung my fist, connecting with his face. The crack of bones echoed through the hallway. He stumbled back, clutching his jaw, blood gushing from his mouth as he groaned in pain.

The other guard froze, eyes wide. I turned my head slow

JAMES Her laughter still ached in my ears long after she had drifted back to sleep. She was curled up against me, soft and trusting, her face glowing faintly by the silver glow of the falling snow outside. She had no idea. She had no idea that the same hands holding her had taken so many lives, no idea that the mouth that kissed her carried so many deadly secrets—secrets that had the power to destroy the both of us.I brushed a strand of hair from her perfect face, my chest tightening. I want to spend forever with you, she had said. God, she had no idea how much I wanted that. But forever and happy endings weren’t meant for people like me not with men like Nicholas circling around like hungry vultures, not when the past I had tried so much to bury had come back to haunt me.Her lips curved in her sleep as if she was dreaming of something pure a happy life with kids and so much joy, something that had nothing to do with the darkness I carried. I kissed her forehead, holding onto that

STELLASlowly, my eyes opened. I looked at the time, but it was 6 a.m. Everywhere was still dark, and it felt like I didn’t sleep one bit last night. God, I needed coffee. But I didn’t want to disturb James—he held me so tightly, as if the moment he let go, I was going to disappear.Slowly, I turned to face him. His hair was messy, and he looked so adorable and peaceful when he slept. I couldn’t stop admiring him.Gently, I ran a hand down his face. He stirred in his sleep, and I smiled. God, this man was everything to me. He looked so breathtaking just like this.I saw his eyes slowly open. “Baby,” he said sleepily, “why are you up so early?”I smiled faintly. “Couldn’t sleep.”He pulled me closer, his arms still heavy with drowsiness. “You should’ve woken me,” he murmured, his voice low and rough. “I hate when you’re awake without me.”“I didn’t want to disturb you,” I whispered, brushing a strand of hair from his face. “You look so peaceful when you sleep. I like seeing you that wa

JAMES The city always felt different when Nicholas was involved. I knew him wanting to meet up was not a request and I didn’t have any choice.I arrived at one of his bars. I got out of the car and stepped in. A man in a black suit walked up to me. “Mr. Nicholas is expecting you, right this way,” he said as he led me to a secluded office area.I pushed open the door and Nicholas sat behind his desk, a wild smile on his lips. “James, it is such a beautiful night, wouldn’t you agree?”“I got your text, Nicholas. Whatever you have to say, make it fast,” I said with a confident expression.“James, don’t be like that, let’s not get straight to business. You are my guest, at least allow me to offer you a drink.”“I’m not thirsty,” I cut him off, my voice cold, eyes locking on his.Nicholas leaned back in his chair, chuckling with amusement. He was enjoying every moment of this. He took a drink from his glass. “You know, James, that temper of yours is going to get you killed one day.”“You

STELLASheila was practically glowing the moment we stepped out. Her laughter filled the car, her hands fluttering as she described all the dresses she was going to get. “I cannot believe we are actually going on a shopping spree with James’s card! Do you know how much money he has? I mean—you should, since he’s your boyfriend and all but Stella…” She kept going on and on, rattling off designers and colors like she was born for this.I smiled at her excitement. To Sheila, I looked like I was listening, but my mind was far, far away from everything she was saying. It was on James. I still couldn’t help but worry about him, even when he told me not to.“You really need to tell me how you got James to fall for you, Stella. God knows I need a man like him. Only if our college selves could see us now. I’m just so excited—you have no idea how I felt when James called me.”Her voice cut through my thoughts. She leaned forward, peering into my face. “What’s wrong with you? You’re zoning out,

STELLASomething was wrong with him.I could feel it, but I just didn't know what. Something was definitely wrong I saw it in the way he looked at me, like he was trying to hold the memory of my face, afraid that I would leave him. He smiled when I looked at him, but it didn’t reach his eyes—not the way it used to.All through breakfast his mind was somewhere else. His hand was warm against mine, but his thoughts were far away, and I saw it in his eyes like he was afraid to tell me what was going on. That scared me.“James,” I said softly, putting the fork down, “what's wrong?”He gave a small chuckle, the kind that was supposed to convince me he was fine, but I knew better. “I’m fine. Do I not look fine?” He gave me a reassuring smile.“You do... but James—”“But nothing, baby.” He squeezed my hand just enough to discomfort me but also reassure me. “I’m fine. It’s probably stress you know the company has lots of investors, and I have so many meetings to attend.”I understood him, but
