DANTE’S POV

The word slams into me harder than the bullets we outran tonight.

Coward.

She doesn’t know what the hell she’s saying. Doesn’t know what it costs me to hold back when every instinct screams to take her lips, her fire, her fury, and make it mine until she forgets her own damn name.

But I can’t, not when the walls are closing in, not when a single weakness could put a target on her back bigger than the one already painted there.

My fists curl. I should walk out. Put distance between u

  • THE DON'S FAVORITE OBSESSION    Chapter 44: The Keeper of What Remained

Dante’s POV The pensione looked insignificant.Three floors, old stone and faded sign above the entrance.Nothing about it suggested that a woman I had spent two months searching for had once slept inside.I stood across the street and stared.“Don’t approach the clerk,” I told Luca.“Why?”“Because if someone rehearsed his story, they’ll know exactly what he was supposed to say.”“And if we question him?”“He’ll repeat it.”“So what do we do?”“Watch.”We remained there for nearly an hour. People came and went. A woman carrying groceries, an elderly couple, a delivery man. Nothing, then a man stepped out of the pensione. He paused, looked around and then, walked away.I narrowed my eyes.“Follow him.”Luca immediately reached for his phone. One of our men moved after him. I watched until they disappeared around the corner. Then I looked back at the pensione.Leona had been here, that much was real. But why?Was she passing through? Was she hiding? Was someone helping her? Or had she

  • THE DON'S FAVORITE OBSESSION    Chapter 43: The City That Remembers

Leona’s POVThe first thing I noticed about Verona was the silence. Not the absence of sound. There was plenty of it.Cars whispered over wet roads. Somewhere in the distance, a bell tolled through the night. People laughed beneath umbrellas, their voices carried away by the cold wind. A train groaned behind me as it pulled away from the station, leaving a trail of steam and the metallic smell of rain but beneath all of it was something quieter.Something that felt like it was waiting.I stood on the platform with my small bag hanging from my shoulder, the leather-bound book pressed against my chest.Verona.I had said the name so many times in my head that it had almost stopped sounding real. Now I was standing inside it.My birthplace. The place my mother had written about, the place my father had apparently tried to protect. The place where my family had begun…And where, according to the words hidden inside that book, everything would eventually end.I looked around. There was not

  • THE DON'S FAVORITE OBSESSION    Chapter 42: The Trail of Lies

Dante’s POVVerona appeared beneath us through a veil of rain. The city was nothing like New York.New York announced itself. It roared. It glittered. It threatened you openly.Verona whispered. From the small window of the jet, I watched the lights scattered beneath the clouds, golden against the wet darkness, ancient buildings pressed together as though they were keeping secrets from the rest of the world.I should have felt nothing.Instead, I felt the familiar pressure behind my ribs.Leona.Every city had become a question since she disappeared. Was she here?Had she been here? Was she alive? The last question was the one I refused to ask aloud.Because asking it would make it real.I leaned back in my seat and checked my watch.02:17.We had left New York less than three hours ago.Luca sat opposite me, his elbows resting on his knees, phone clenched between both hands. He had barely spoken since we boarded.Neither of us needed to.The image of Joe's body had followed us onto t

  • THE DON'S FAVORITE OBSESSION    Chapter 41: The Girl Who Died and Lived Again

Leona’s POV It's been over two months now but I can't forget that night. The night I left, the world didn’t end...it just went silent. No sirens. No footsteps. No shouting in the hall. Only my heartbeat, pounding too fast for a body that hadn’t run far enough yet.I didn’t look back. If I did, I might see him or his shadow in the doorway, the weight of everything I still wanted to say but never could. So I kept walking until the city swallowed me whole. When I reached Nora’s place, the sky was just starting to turn midnight blue. My fingers trembled as I pressed the buzzer. One ring. Two. Then the door opened, and there she was...barefoot, hair in a messy bun, eyes wide like she’d seen a ghost. She didn’t ask questions. She just pulled me in.“Leona?” she whispered, clutching my shoulders like she wasn’t sure I was real.“I can’t stay,” I said. My voice cracked on the words. “I just...needed to see you before I disappear.”Her expression flickered between fear and determination. “Th

  • THE DON'S FAVORITE OBSESSION    Chapter 40: When the Lights Went Out

Dante's POV The dark hit me like a hand to the chest, not the mere absence of light but the thick, watching kind of dark that presses against your skin and whispers of things you can’t control. For weeks I’d been living in a half-shadow, but that night the shadow moved. The chandelier over my desk sputtered, sank to a shudder, came back, then stuttered again, once, twice and died. The generator kicked and the lights stayed black. Old instincts rose, cold and precise. check the feed, lock the gates, arm the men.I was already on my feet. The house was a different place in the dark; corridors that had been corridors of comfort became tunnels into the unknown. My men moved like phantoms, soft feet and low curses, but there was a wrongness under their efficiency, a tremor that said we were late. The first sound that made every hair on my skin stand on end was the gunshot. It came from the east wing. Not a crash or a shout ... a single, clean report that echoed and fell. For a second I di

  • THE DON'S FAVORITE OBSESSION    Chapter 39: Days without her

Dante's POV Luca appeared, disheveled but sharp-eyed, pulling on his jacket as he approached. “What happened?”“She’s gone.”His face stilled. That unshakable calm of his faltered, if only for a breath. Then he was moving. “Cameras. Guards. Every exit. We’ll find her.”I followed, but the mansion’s halls blurred around me. All I could see was the way she had looked at me before sleep stole her ... broken, glass-eyed, clutching herself as if she were trying to hold the pieces in.My chest tightened.I told myself she was still here, just hiding, sulking, punishing me the way she knew best. But each second stretched thin, brittle. Each door we opened, each room we tore apart without finding her ... it hollowed me further. When the cameras showed nothing, my fury turned inward.“She didn’t vanish into thin air,” I growled, shoving the table. The screen rattled, one of the men flinched. “Check again!”But the recordings yielded nothing. Just Leona walking the halls hours earlier… then sil

Leona's POV My knees weakened. Reality burned, searing through me, leaving me with more questions than answers. I wanted to scream at him, claw the smug calm off his face, demand why he thought I could handle this.Because beneath that ruthless mask of his, I caught it. Just for a second. The flick
