The building shuddered, sending dust cascading from the ceiling. Rue caught Elise by the arm as a crash sounded from the corridor, followed by the scrape of claws against metal.“They're inside,” Kael said, raising his rifle. “We need to get everyone away from the outer walls before they break through.”The Hollow forced its head through the gap, its jaws snapping as it dragged the rest of its body into the room. Kael fired three times. The shots struck its face and shoulder, making it recoil, but it did not fall.“That's not stopping it!” Flip cried.“It isn't supposed to,” Rue replied, pulling Elise behind an overturned desk. “The bullets only slow them down. Aim for the head and buy us a few seconds.”“Only a few seconds?” Flip stared at her. “And what exactly are we supposed to do with a few seconds?”“Use them wisely,” Kael said, firing again.The Hollow slammed against the shutter. For one stunned moment, Rue could only stare.The woman holding Elise was not a stranger. She knew that face, the sharp eyes and the familiar features that had once been softened by a smile. But the woman standing in front of her looked nothing like the pregnant woman Rue had last seen.“Celeste?” Rue's voice came out thin. Her gaze dropped briefly to Celeste's stomach before returning to her face. “You're not pregnant?”“Yes,” Celeste replied, her grip tightening around Elise. “And it's all because of you.”Elise struggled against the hand covering her mouth. The knife pressed closer to her neck, and she went still.“Were you so jealous that you couldn't help me?” Celeste continued. “I lost my baby because you left me out to die.”Rue's expression changed. “Celeste, I need you to calm down. Rue kept glancing over her shoulder as they moved through the narrow streets. The uneasy feeling had settled beneath her skin and refused to leave.Kael walked a few steps ahead, his rifle ready. The address Evelyn sent should be on the next block.”The girl looked up anxiously. “Do you think Elise will know where my sister is?”Rue turned to her. “We haven't met Elise yet, so I can't promise that. The four of them had barely gone two streets when Rue noticed a girl.At first, it was only a movement at the far end of a narrow passage between two shuttered shops. Rue slowed, lifting one hand to signal the others. Kael stopped beside her, while Flip nearly walked into Brittany.“What?” Flip whispered. “Why’d we stop?”Rue did not answer immediately. She was watching the passage. A young girl stumbled into view, backing away from two men who had cornered her against a wall. One had a hand wrapped around her arm. The other stood in front of her, blocking the only clear way out.“Let me go!” the girl cried, struggling to pull free.“Keep your voice down,” one of the men snapped. “You want to bring those things here?”“Then leave me alone!”The man holding her arm shoved her against the wall. The girl tried to push past him, but the second man caught her by the shoulder.Rue’s expression hardened. “We have to help her.”Kael caught her wrist before she could move. “There are two of th

They waited in silence, listening to the heavy impacts against the metal door and the scraping sounds that followed. Rue kept her rifle raised while Kael stood beside her, one hand pressed against his bleeding shoulder. The man who had let them in watched the entrance, and his girlfriend remained close behind him.Another thud shook the door.The woman flinched. “You think they can get in?”“Not if this door holds,” the man whispered.Nobody moved. They listened as the impacts grew farther apart, followed by a low, dragging sound that travelled down the street. After a while, even that disappeared. They waited longer, until the only sound left was their uneven breathing.Rue checked the street through the narrow gap while they waited. The alarm had stopped, but fresh cracks ran across the road. She wondered how many Hollow were moving beneath the buildings and how long the couple's shelter would have held if they stayed. There was no time to waste.The man finally turned towards them.

The streets had become a graveyard of abandoned vehicles. Cars stood across the road at crooked angles, some with their doors hanging open, others overturned beneath fallen signs and broken concrete. Glass covered the pavement, and the buildings lining the street stared down at them through dark, empty windows.Rue checked the address on Evelyn’s phone before slipping it back into her pocket.“We’re close,” she whispered.Kael glanced at the road ahead. “You said that ten minutes ago.”“And we’ve covered a lot of ground in ten minutes.”“We’ve covered three streets.”“Would you prefer I lie and tell you we’re nearly there?”“I’d prefer you stop checking that phone every thirty seconds.
