Chapter 2

You know the story about the moon goddess setting us on the path of our fate?

Sometimes I wonder if it's true, probably because there's no moon goddess after all. If yes, why did she think being a slave at the pack house and being bullied in school was the path I should follow?

We werewolves usually live together as one big family. We are designed to stay together as a pack. And it's rare for werewolves to live separately.

Again, werewolves are meant to love and care for each other. But in my own case, I don't think that theory is true.

In fact, I question a lot of our beliefs since they don't seem to work for me. Or maybe I'm an outcast that shouldn't be loved.

Ever since I was young, I have been an object of people's fury. From my dad and siblings, and now the whole pack except for my two best friends, Lola and Nana.

Growing up, my father always told me I was a witch who killed her own mother immediately after she gave birth to me. He believed I killed his mate, and I became someone he abused a lot of times.

Eventually, my brother joined the team, believing I deprived him of the benefits of enjoying a mother’s love.

I'm beginning to think everyone was right. No one wants me anyway. I'm what you'd call "the reject."

I loved my father and only sibling still, until they both were killed on the battlefield, in an intense war, with some creatures I heard we'd been enemies with for ages.

And once again, I was a joke to the moon goddess. I could practically feel her hatred for me. Maybe it’s because I don’t believe she exists. Who would believe in the existence of any goddess in such a situation?

Being bullied became the norm. Everyone felt I should be the trash can, especially when I failed to turn like the rest of the children when I clocked sixteen.

Alphas get to turn at the age of thirteen, and Aiden was so lucky that he turned first at the age of eleven, making him one of the strongest wolves, if not the strongest, in our pack.

And we, the normal werewolves, have our first turn at the age of sixteen.

Everything is pretty much fresh in my memory.

"Anna!" Lola and Nana cried out to their best friend, who was taking forever to get dressed.

"Almost done!!". She shouted back. And finally, she appeared in front of her best friends in a yellow floral summer dress. Her auburn locks cascaded down to reach her waist, and her green doe eyes shone ever so brightly.

"Finally, it's the day for us to shift and meet our mates," Lola chirped in.

"I can't wait." Anna rubbed her hands together, feeling nervous and happy at the same time.

"But what if he doesn't want me?" Anna asked, almost in tears. Gasping, Lola took hold of her best friend's hand and said, "Don't worry, mates are meant to love us as designed by the moon goddess, not reject us. You remember Granny always telling us about how everything feels right when you meet your mate and he protects us?"

Nodding her head, Anna held back her tears and replied, "Yes, I do."

Lola continued, "Exactly what is going to happen to us?"

"Our mate is going to accept us, love us, and also protect us." Immediately, Anna's once dull eyes began to lighten up again, and she happily hugged her best friends.

"Anna, can you see yourself?" The ever-so-dramatic Nana fake gasped at her friend. Rolling her eyes, Anna answered, "What again?"

"You're so beautiful, and no one comes close to you," Nana giggled.

"So don't ever think your mate is going to reject you." “In fact, he's going to be dumbstruck and tongue-tied by your beauty". "In fact, he's going to get blin…." Nana was about to finish her statement when Lola cut her off.

"That's enough; we are going to be late for the ceremony." Let's hurry now, shall we?" Lola said

The three best friends left together after much talk and cajoling to attend the awakening ceremony, where they got to shift for the first time and perhaps meet their destined mate.

But that day was a miserable one for Anna. She wasn't able to shift and was labeled an omega from that day on.

Back to the present...

"Down to earth, Anna," Nana screeched.

"Christ! Keep your voice down, will you?" Shocked, I groaned as she seemingly wanted to block my eardrum.

"You spaced out again," Nana pointed out the obvious.

"Okay! Fine, accepted. What do you want?" I asked, visibly irritated by the shout.

"We were thinking, we should have a girl's hangout on your birthday next week." Nana and Lola said it together as if it were something they'd practiced together.

Shrugging, I said "Why not"? It's not as if it will be a day better than the rest. Ever since I wasn't able to shift, things have gone from bad to worse. And it's so much more painful since I couldn't heal fast because I've got no werewolf power.

"And Lola found her mate," Nana screeched again. I was mentally shaking my head at the overly dramatic tone until I heard her well.

"Wait, what!!" My turn to scream, uh-oh.

"Oh my God," why didn't you tell me this earlier? I demanded as I hugged my two best friends. I'm really happy for her.

It seems some people get to have their happily ever after after all. It's not just meant for everyone. Someone like me, for instance,

But I was happy and not about to drown in self-pity again, not when one of my best friends just met her mate.

So I asked, "Lola, when did you both meet?" I was quite eager to hear the full story.

"Well, yesterday". She answered shyly.

And I mouthed an "ohhhh," understanding why she wasn't in school yesterday.

"Someone had a good time yesterday," I teased her, and she turned scarlet red from embarrassment. "And who is he"? I asked again.

"Well, he's Jason". She answered. "Really, that hot dude from our class You're so lucky." I tug at her arm playfully and whisper, "Well, have you guys mated?"

This time, it was Lola's turn to scream. "What! No". Now, she's got Nana and I confused.

Almost at the same time, we asked her, "Why not?" Fiddling with her dress, "we both decided that until I turn eighteen, which is tomorrow,"

Nana and I shared a look and busted into laughter. "Look who's about to get laid."

"Ugh. "You guys, please stop," she said, faking her anger, but I couldn't stop laughing. She ran home in the process.

Nana and I bid ourselves goodbye, and I was left alone to face my harsh reality again.
