Neria.

Lila's little fingers tightened around my sleeves, clutching my hand like it might slip away if she didn’t hold on hard enough.

“Mommy …” Tears rimmed the edges of her eyes as she called, “Is Daddy leaving, again?”

Again..that was the highlight, and my eyes burnt at how carefully she said it.

I forced a smile, one that didn’t reach my eyes as I reassured, “No, baby. He’s just...”

“But…” She cut in, glancing past me, her eyes darting between the man standing a few steps away, and Chloe.

“Then why does she call him Daddy, too?” Lila asked, her voice shaking with fear, and something that painfully resembled accusation, abandonment.

For a suffocating second, everything went still, and all I could hear was the hurt in my daughter’s voice as she asked that question.

My gaze snapped to the side, landing on Camille, who stood a few metres from where Lila and I stood.

She was practically inched on Dominic, their shoulders nearly touching, and to her side, she tightly held Chloe's hand.

I hadn't noticed it before, and now that I did, bitterness lodged in my gut.. They looked like a family of three. They painted a perfect picture, so harmonious it stung to watch.

Lila and I looked like the outsiders...If I wasn't in so much anger, at the injustice, at the disrespect, I would have laughed at how ridiculous it was..

“Daddy, are we still going this afternoon?....I get scared around hospitals." Little Chloe's voice was sad and innocent as she expressed....She had just called him Daddy, again. It sounded like a calculated blow, meant to drive my daughter to the edge.

As if she had just noticed the backtrack, Camille stiffened..

Then, almost too quickly, she crouched down, her voice tight. “Sweetheart, no… don’t call him that.” She smoothed Chloe's hair, forcing a laugh that sounded stiff. “Call him Uncle, okay? Just Uncle.”

The word hung in the air.

Uncle.

Uncle would have been fine if it wasn't so forced. If Camille's voice didn't break so pitifully as she said it. She looked like the universe wronged her and her daughter.

Across from us, Dominic frowned, his brows pulling together as if he wanted to say something, anything, but before he could, I grabbed his arm and pulled him aside.

“Do you have no sense of boundaries, Dominic?” My voice almost broke as I asked.

His face darkened. “What are you talking about?”

There he was, feigning clueless.

“You’re acting close with your lover in front of our child,” I shot back, my voice trembling with everything he wouldn't notice, the hurt, the anger, the humiliation.

"Do you think Lila won’t notice? Or do you just enjoy hurting her?” By then, my eyes were burning with tears as I asked.

His jaw clenched. “She’s not my lover.”

The denial came fast. Too quickly, like a person who was guilty..

I let out a short and humourlesss laugh. “Really? Then what is she, Dominic?”

He didn’t answer. That was the answer that I needed. Besides, why did it still matter?

I reached into my handbag, my fingers brushing against the folded document I knew too well. I had read and re-read it for hours, after all.

“You remember what you signed, right?” I said quietly, my voice dropping. “The divorce agreement.”

His eyes flickered.

“The papers are just signed. The divorce is not final, until the one month cooling. If you can’t commit, ” I paused, clenching my fingers at the side, “Don’t expect me to keep my side of the promise either.”

The threat came too smoothly than I expected. And shortly after, tension stretched.

At his side, Dominic clenched and unclenched his fingers, clearly, pissed. I had just threatened him, after all.

Then he gave me that look. The disappointment, the loathing, heavens, that was like a knife, buried deep into the confines of my heart.

Once again, I was painted as the villain in his heart.

' You are doing this for Lila, Neria.' I mumbled under my breath, and that, and the thought of seeing her smiling, ground me.

I would point a gun at Dominic and force him to stay if I had to..

He didnt say anything. He just peeled his eyes from me and stormed off, heading towards Camille and her daughter.

I followed shortly after, descreetly wiping my tears as I returned to Lila’s side.

“Hey,” he was crouched to Chloe's level as he whispered, his tone too soft, a softness that he'd never shown our daughter before. That stung, but what stung more was how Lila's body stiffened, next to mine.

"Be a good girl and go to your appointment with your Mommy," He said, gently pinching Chloe's cheeks, I looked away.

"I won't be able to join you...But, I will make it up to you, later." He turned to Camille as he whispered, so delicately.

Camille's face fell, and Dominic clenched his fingers, I guess it broke him to fail her, them..

“I see,” she said, her voice carefully neutral. “Then… we won’t disturb you.”

She took her daughter’s hand, offering him a small, tight smile that didn’t quite hide the disappointment in her eyes.

“Come on, Chloe ”

Chloe hesitated, looking back once, but Camille gently tugged her along.

Silence settled in their place. Dominic was angry, and his gaze stayed on their backs until they disappeared.

A beat later, Lila broke into a grin, her earlier worry already forgotten. “Mommy! Daddy is staying!”

I swallowed, forcing a nod. “Yes… he is.”

And he did.

Slowly, days stretched. And Dominic became a constant in our lives.

He would come earlier, sit through meals, read bedtime stories, and help her choose dresses. God, it almost felt real.

Those days were the happiest, and Lila’s little giggles became the highlight. Camille's call were a frequent at first, then they started getting few, after going unanswered for a while.

That should have meant nothing, right? But it filled my heart with hope, that maybe.... It was impossible not to hope for more when everything felt so right, touched hearts so deeply..

Then the weekend came. Our 'family' of three was set for camping.

We left early, the city fading behind us as the beautiful greenery ushered us in.. It was beautiful, streams, mountains, all serene, just like the past week had been. Dominic had picked the location, even.

When we arrived, Lila ran ahead, her little laughter echoing between the trees.

“Slow down!” I called out, wearing a helpless smile.

Dominic walked beside me, hands in his pockets, his presence steady, unfamiliar in how… natural it felt.

Too natural.

“Careful!" I shouted, my gaze snapping back to Lila..

Her foot had caught on a rock.

I lunged forward instinctively, reaching out, but my own footing slipped.

For a split second, everything tilted, and my heart shook as I tightly held her..

Then strong arms caught me, just in time.

My breath hitched as I collided against Dominic's chest, his hand firm around my waist, steadying me before I could fall.

The world seemed to pause. Our faces were close, his breath fanning my face. Then I saw a flicker of something in his eyes... as if he..

My heart started racing, at the thought...

“Mommy!”

Lila called, and the magic stopped.

We both blinked, snapping back to reality as Lila started laughing.

“Mommy is heavy!” she declared, giggling.

Dominic's expression changed instantly. The warmth vanished, replaced by something cold, distant.

He then let go, so fast, as if it burned him to hold me. His gaze hardened as it settled on my face. “You always find a way, don’t you?”

The accusations, and it hurt more than it should have. I opened my mouth, " Dominic I.."

His phone buzzed.

He glanced at it, jaw tightening, then turned away without another word.

He walked off, answering the call as he went, his voice low and unreadable.

“Mommy?" Lila called, confusion clouding her eyes as she asked, “Where is Daddy going?”

I forced a smile, brushing dirt from her clothes just to give myself a second.

“He just… has something to take care of,” I said softly. “He’ll be back.”

I wasn't so sure either.

  • THIRTY DAYS TO DIVORCE: NOW HE WANTS ME BACK.    Someone wants to see you.

Neria Maybe it was due to emotional distress, but even after failing to get enough sleep for nearly a month, I couldn't sleep through the night, and I woke up around three in the morning, my head pounding ruthlessly. Slowly, I rose, switched on the bedside lamp, and drank a glass of cold water. Luckily, that somehow cleared my mind. Slightly disoriented, I walked to the closet, and when I saw the familiar handbag, a sigh of relief escaped from my lips. I needed something strong for the headache, and the handbag had the solution. After Lila's diagnosis, weeks ago, I had started having trouble sleeping and a throbbing headache that wouldn't go away. The doctor had prescribed the drugs for me, and I carried them wherever I went, like armour. After taking two, I went back to bed, and I was just about to lie back to sleep when I remembered the envelope that Kael had passed to me the other day. After hesitating for a while, I picked it up from under the pillow and opened

  • THIRTY DAYS TO DIVORCE: NOW HE WANTS ME BACK.    Back then...

Dominic. "I know that Neria doesn't like me and sees me as a threat." Camillie sounded aggrieved as she spoke. " But yesterday she really went too far. Chloe has always been in weak health, and her body can't handle too much stress. When she saw Neria slapping me, she was so shaken that she fell ill. I think Neria shouldn't drag an innocent kid into all this." Her voice shook as she expressed, tears that she didn't want me to see, following uneven paths down her cheeks. The sight of her crying had anger burning through my chest, and I adjusted my tie, utterly frustrated. " Don't worry, Camillie, I will have Neria apologise to you in person," I promised, my voice softening. Afterwards, Camillie held wet antibacterial wipes in her hands, as she gently wiped Chloe's forehead, her fingers trembling with grievances she didn't know how to let out. She still had so much to say, but chose to be sensible. If Neria were half as sensible as Camillie, would things have turned so

  • THIRTY DAYS TO DIVORCE: NOW HE WANTS ME BACK.    Neria

Neria. For five years, Dominic had been asking for a divorce, and each time, I vehemently rejected him, unwilling to let my daughter live in a broken home. I grew up in an orphanage myself, and anything that closely resembled such settings triggered fear within me. But now...? A tear slid down my face as I looked at the papers on the bedside. Now that my daughter was no more, there was no need to hold onto this sham of a marriage anymore. She was the only reason I had kept on tearing every divorce agreement that Dominic brought my way, and with her absence, I was finally ending it. Five years... Five years of trying, of resisting, and they all ended with divorce papers, trembling fingers, tears, a lost life and a shaky, almost unreadable signature. As I stared at my signature, sitting next to two tears, a sob broke from my lips. Since Dominic wanted freedom so much, he could have it. He could be with whoever he wished. He could play father and husband to his mistress

  • THIRTY DAYS TO DIVORCE: NOW HE WANTS ME BACK.    Grief

Neria. It was the second day after my world fell apart.A lot had happened in the last twenty-four hours. I had moved from heartbroken to hopeful, and back to being heartbroken all over again... and now, as I sat in the hauntingly empty room, the tears wouldn't stop falling.I hugged a pink sweater closer to my chest. Her familiar scent still lingered in it. It was damp, soaked in tears and grief. My eyes moved to the empty hospital bed. That's where she'd been sleeping for the last few days. That's where her legs had dangled days ago when she asked me about the doctor's report... that's where she'd sat while she showed me the painting with three awkward figures....Now the bed was empty, cold, and the sight of it sent another sob, bitter, deep, tearing past my lips.Lila...My little girl was really gone... but I couldn't accept it. I couldn't take it.I had spent the last twenty-four hours trying to process it, grieving, and yet, it just wouldn't click. How could she be dead? Just l

  • THIRTY DAYS TO DIVORCE: NOW HE WANTS ME BACK.    A mistake...

Neria. " Dominic, what do you consider as crossing the line?" I snapped, my voice shaking with all the build-up anger. What was the point of inviting us to the gala if he enjoyed his first love's presence more? Or, did he specifically bring me for comparison? to torture me? And my daughter? " What are you talking about?" He asked, and I swear, I had never been a violent person but at that moment, I wanted to slap him so hard that my palms itched. Maybe if I did, I would perfectly fit in his description of me ..evil, villainous. " You asking me to apologise for slapping Camille without asking for an explanation first is crossing the line for me, Dominic. " Slowly, trying to breathe through everything, I explained. " And, you, buying that toy house, for her daughter, while yours has been waiting for the same from you, for ages, is crossing another line, Dominic!" There was unmasked disappointment in my voice as I stated. For a moment, something flickered in his ey

  • THIRTY DAYS TO DIVORCE: NOW HE WANTS ME BACK.    Apologise, now!

Neria. He stood from a distance, too guarded, like I would pounce on him if he stood any closer. Stupid of me for harborig hope...for thinking we could be something, a family, even if just for a month. I moved closer, meaning to fasten Lila’s seat belt, and Dominic moved back, a frown etched on his lips. It should have hurt, but instead, a self-mocking smile tugged at the corners of my lips. I thought we had made some progress, but after that incident, the near-kissing incident, Dominic had reverted to him usual shell, cold and detached, an impenetrable wall. He still showed up, but this time, it felt like a duty, forced, and it was almost like he was counting days. Lord, tears burned in my eyes when I recalled the digital calendar I had 'accidentally' glimpsed on the screen of his phone. It had days marked red and green. The green ones were the ones he had stayed with us, and the remaining fourteen were marked red, like a hell he dreaded yet, forced to attend

Neria. Five years of hope were erased by a single stroke, and as I stared at my dull signature, staring back at me, inexplicable pain gripped my heart. It was over. . I had no business there. I calmly placed my pen over the desk, and I faced the door, desperate to escape that suffocating

  • THIRTY DAYS TO DIVORCE: NOW HE WANTS ME BACK.    I will.

Neria. "Dominic. " I called out softly, as if that could fix everything. " Lila..she doesn't have much long left to live." At the words, those cruel words, a sad, lone tear slid down my face. " She needs you, now.." My dignity, my pride, they were all forgotten as I begged. " Is this y

  • THIRTY DAYS TO DIVORCE: NOW HE WANTS ME BACK.    She needs you, more..

Neria I knew something was off before the doctor said it. Not because of the nonstop beeping of the machines, and certainly, not because of the numerous tests he had carried on her, but because of the way he wouldn’t meet my eyes, and the subtle way his hands trembled as he held the final repo
