The air in the sacred clearing shifted the second Kael took his first step off the raised stone dais. The restless murmur of the crowd died down, swallowed by a sudden, heavy quiet that made every heartbeat sound like a war drum in my ears.

I held my breath, my hands balling into tight fists at the sides of my simple linen dress. My wolf, quiet for so many months under the weight of my anxiety, suddenly sat up deep inside my mind. She let out a long, desperate howl that vibrated through my ribs.

Then Kael looked at me.

His dark eyes, usually so calculated and distant, snapped wide. A raw, wild golden light burst across his irises, bright enough to burn through the afternoon glare. It was the ancient light of the shift, the undeniable call of the Moon Goddess taking hold.

He stepped forward.

As he closed the distance between us, the cool autumn breeze vanished, replaced by an intense, overwhelming heat. The cold air in my lungs turned hot and heavy. The scent hit me a second later—thick, rich pine and fresh, ozone-heavy rain. It washed over my senses like a tidal wave, drowning out the smell of dry dirt, sweet cakes, and the hundreds of spectators standing around us.

It was his scent. The same scent that used to cling to his wooden practice swords when we were kids. The scent I had dreamed about every night he was away at the northern border campaigns.

A sudden, fierce spark danced across my bare skin, starting at my collarbone and shooting straight down to my fingertips. It felt like static electricity, hot and buzzing, confirming everything my heart had clung to since we were ten years old behind the old oak tree.

He is ours, my wolf whispered, her voice overflowing with relief. The bond is real. He came back for us.

A small, breathless smile started to form on my lips. The years of subtle cruelty from the pack women, the pities, the cold looks, and the suffocating fears—all of it felt like it was about to melt away into nothing. Kael froze mid-step, just three feet away.

Kael’s hands snapped into tight fists at his sides, his knuckles turning stark white. The hot, electric spark on my skin suddenly turned icy cold. The pine and rain in the air began to smell less like a sanctuary and more like a warning.

He didn't take another step. He stood there, trapped between the ancient pull of our souls and the cold reality of his ambition, his breath coming in short, harsh rasps.
