Chapter 3

Auteur: Sweet Beet
The livestream chat exploded instantly, comments flying across the screen in a rapid blur.

[Am I seeing things, or is that a straight-up brick in a phone box?!]

[Are they seriously playing people like this? Trash company can't even afford a real phone? They're going bankrupt for sure!]

[Dude went from lucky winner to absolute clown.]

The raffle winner picked up the brick and stared at Ms. Brown, who was standing right beside him to hand out the prize, in absolute disbelief, demanding to know what was going on.

Amelia Brown was visibly stunned, but she managed to regain her composure quickly. Trying to smooth things over, she said, “This... this was just a little stunt to liven up the room! Just a lighthearted joke, everyone!”

She turned and glared straight at Henry, sitting in the front row, whispering sharp orders under her breath. “Mr. Collins, joke's over. Hand over the real phone right now.”

But Henry didn't have a real phone. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he squirmed in his seat.

Seeing him freeze up, the surrounding employees began whispering among themselves.

“Isn't he the head of the planning department? He definitely pocketed the money himself.”

“Think about it. If the winner hadn't opened the box on stage and taken it home instead, he would've had to swallow that loss silently.”

“God, that's disgusting. How did a guy like him even get promoted to manager?”

Trapped by the mounting chatter, Henry looked like a rat backed into a corner. He frantically scanned the room until his eyes landed on me, and he bolted straight toward my table.

“It was you! You were in charge of buying the phone! You swapped it out and put a brick inside!”

I stood up calmly, making no effort to deny it. “You're right. I put the brick in there.”

Hearing me admit it, Henry treated it like a lifeline, instantly shouting to the whole crowd, “He confessed! You all heard him! He put the brick in the box!”

“Ms. Brown, Noah is just an intern in my department. I thought he was doing a decent job, so I trusted him with buying the prize. I had no idea he's a greedy thief who'd steal the funds!”

A smirk curled on my lips. “Mr. Collins, if we're talking about pocketing funds, I wouldn't dare compete with you. You handed me a single hundred-dollar bill to go out and buy a thousand-dollar iPhone.”

The room erupted into another wave of furious, hushed chatter.

“Wait, doesn't corporate fully reimburse event prizes? And Henry only gave him a hundred bucks? He was clearly forcing the intern to pay the difference out of pocket!”

“I heard that's his classic trick in the planning department. He uses it to squeeze interns before deciding if they get hired full time.”

“Well, Mr. Collins finally ran into a brick wall this time. This intern obviously isn't someone you mess with!”

Watching Henry's face turn a darker, uglier shade of red, I smiled, thoroughly enjoying every second of it.

“Mr. Collins, a hundred dollars can't even buy the cheapest knockoff phone on the market. So, I figured a brick was the best substitute.”

Losing all control, Henry shouted at me, “Shut your mouth, you little b*st*rd! Stop lying! I gave you the full budget! You stole the money yourself, and now you're trying to frame me!”

My voice turned cold. “Mr. Collins, I really underestimated how shameless you are, lying straight to everyone's faces.

“I actually recorded our conversation yesterday. Since you refuse to admit it, let's play it out loud and let everyone hear who's telling the truth.”

I took out my phone, brought up the audio file, and prepared to press play.

Before I could hit the button, Henry lunged at me, snatching the phone right out of my hand as we tumbled to the floor. Caught off guard, I was pinned down almost immediately.

Henry grabbed me by the collar with one hand, pulling his other arm back to throw a heavy punch straight toward my face.

“You little punk! You did this on purpose! I’m going to finish you!”

Just as his fist was about to crack against my jaw, a furious roar echoed from the entrance of the venue.

“Who dares to lay a single finger on him?!”

Dad rolled his eyes at me.“And whose fault is that? You insisted on playing an office worker instead of stepping up to take over the family enterprise.”I grabbed his arm, leaning my head on his shoulder.“You know me, Dad, I’m completely useless at running a business. My shoulders aren't built to carry the livelihoods of tens of thousands of employees."My only dream in life is to be a low-key, wholesome billionaire heir who lives comfortably, travels the world, and enjoys the good things. Don't make things hard for me!”Dad lightly flicked my forehead with a sigh. “I swear, my biggest regret is not having a second kid back then. Now I’m stuck with zero heirs.”I gave him a cheeky grin. “Hey, you and Mom are still young! There’s plenty of time to start over!”Dad tried to maintain a stern face, but he couldn't hide his amused scolding. “You’re an adult. Act like one!”“Hehe.”The truth was that I had my whole life mapped out. Life is short, and since I didn't have the stomac

Looking down at him, I asked coolly, “Henry, judging by that look in your eyes, you don't seem very convinced.”He quickly lowered his gaze, shaking his head frantically. “No, not at all! Noah, you're misinterpreting things!”I put on a warm, thoughtful expression. “Honestly, I get it. You only laid hands on me twice, so having you get hit twenty times might seem a bit over the top,“Then again, I wasn't the one who struck you! If anything, Ms. Brown was way too heavy-handed. Why don't I let you return the favor?”Henry shook his head again. “Noah, you must be joking...”My expression darkened, all warmth vanishing from my voice. “Does it look like I’m joking?”Amelia thrust her face right in front of Henry, barking at him in annoyance, “Quit wasting time! Noah told you to hit me, so do it!”With that, Henry raised his hand and landed a slap across Amelia’s face.I shook my head in disappointment. “Did you skip breakfast or what? When Ms. Brown was laying into you, she didn't h

“It was me! I got greedy and stole the event budget. I gave you a hundred bucks to buy an iPhone 17 and used your full-time promotion to force you into line!”I looked him up and down before asking, “How long have you been pulling this stunt? Who was the very first person you extorted?”Henry didn't dare to hide a thing. “It was five years ago, my second year after becoming manager. The prize back then was a washing machine. I used the probation approval to make Susan buy it.”Upon hearing her name, Susan immediately stepped out of the crowd.“That fully automatic washing machine cost me over four thousand dollars! That was more than half my monthly paycheck at the time!”One by one, other employees began stepping forward.“Me too! Last year’s refrigerator was bought with my own money!”“And the year before that, the gaming laptop was mine!”Every single former intern whom Henry had squeezed over the past few years stood up, throwing their accusations in his face.I scanned th

Compared to Dad's men, the venue security guards didn't stand a chance.Suddenly, someone in the crowd shouted, “Hey, look at the embroidery on their jackets!”The bodyguards were all dressed in sharp, matching suits, with "Black Ridge Mining" cleanly embroidered in gold thread on their left chest pockets. It was the ultimate mark of their security detail, signaling to everyone that they were working directly for the Astors.“Black Ridge Mining! They really are the Astors' private security!”“So he's actually the Chairman of Black Ridge Mining?! Doesn't that make Noah a billionaire heir?!”“Holy crap, a billionaire's son was working right next to me in a cubicle?! This is straight out of a movie!”With a wave of Dad's hand, his bodyguards stepped onto the stage, grabbed Amelia and Henry, and brought them straight down to stand before us.At this point, Amelia was starting to believe Dad’s true identity, but she still clung to a last shred of denial. “Do you have any idea what h

All eyes from the hundreds of employees present locked onto Henry.“Talk about a hypocrite! He was the one embezzling the budget all along!”“Look at how comfortably he threw those threats around. There's no way this is his first time pulling this stunt.”“He’s a department manager! Is he seriously so broke that he needs to skim pennies off interns? Pathetic.”Before tonight, Henry’s habit of forcing interns to pay for the raffle prizes was an open secret known only to a few. Now, it was a full-blown public execution.I fixed my gaze on Amelia, demanding an answer.“Now that it’s proven Henry was the one embezzling company funds and using full-time hiring offers to shake down interns, how does management intend to handle him under company policy?”Facing hundreds of her own employees, Amelia knew that if this situation wasn't handled right, the bad press would ruin the firm's reputation. Yet, seeing Henry gripping her arm with a pathetic, pleading expression, she couldn't brin

When my dad, David Astor, saw Henry pinning me down, he sprinted over and shoved Henry off me.He reached down, grabbing my arms to pull me up. “Noah! Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”A sudden wave of frustration and hurt welled up in my chest. Looking at Dad, I pointed straight at Henry. “Dad! He’s been harassing me at work, and he just jumped me!”Dad’s expression darkened, his gaze locking onto Henry with cold authority.“So you're the one who laid a hand on my son.”It wasn't a question, but a fact.Faced with Dad's terrifying glare, Henry felt a cold shiver run down his spine, but he forced himself to stand his ground. “That little punk publicly slandered me and ruined my reputation! He got off easy with a beating!”Before the words had even fully left Henry's mouth, Dad’s fist flew out, landing a clean, heavy punch right on Henry's jaw.“Say it again, I dare you.”Henry stumbled back, clutching his face in utter shock. “You... you hit me!”Dad towered over him with rut
