Chapter 7

Author: Naomi Harlow
The Elysium was a floating palace at sea. It was luxurious beyond excess.

The negotiations went unusually smoothly, so smoothly that even Anthony found it unexpected. The notoriously difficult Nordic arms dealer was uncharacteristically agreeable this time. After signing the contract early, he headed downstairs to the casino for entertainment.

Late into the night, disaster struck without warning.

An explosion erupted from the lower deck. The massive vessel shuddered violently.

"It's an attack! Protect the Don!"

Henry roared as he charged forward, but it was already too late.

Masked men in black tactical gear swarmed aboard from all sides of the ship. Highly trained and heavily armed, they tore through the outer defenses in seconds, ripping straight through the perimeter soldati.

The man at the front pulled off his mask, revealing a face carved with scars.

"Poison Scorpion?!"

It was the enemy Anthony had battled for years.

Two years ago, that very man had brutally killed Zachary.

"Don Anthony Oliver," Poison Scorpion said, sneering as he rested his rifle on his shoulder. "Long time no see. To reel in a prize like you, I didn't hold back."

In the chaos, Mabel and Cheryl were separated by the crowd.

When Anthony finally fought his way out and reached the top deck, the sight before him made his blood boil.

The two women were tied to separate support pillars.

Explosives were strapped around both of their waists.

Red numbers blinked wildly on the timers.

Three minutes remaining.

"Come on," Poison Scorpion said, twirling a remote control in his hand. "Pick one.

"Back then, you hunted me for three straight months over territory. My men died by the dozens. Today, I'll let you taste what it feels like to lose the one you love.

"One is the Donna who bled and fought for you. The other is the one you've sworn to protect.

"I'm not unreasonable. I'll only kill one.

"Whoever you choose to save, I'll stop their detonator. The other one, though…"

He smiled viciously. "Boom. Off to meet God."

"You wouldn't dare!"

Anthony's eyes burned red as he raised his gun.

"You can try me," Poison Scorpion replied calmly, his finger hovering over the button. "Let's see whether your bullet or my hand is quicker."

Cheryl was already terrified beyond reason, sobbing and thrashing against her restraints.

"I don't want to die… I'm so scared… If Zachary were alive, he would save me…"

Mabel, by contrast, showed little reaction.

She only stared quietly at the dark sea beyond the deck.

"Two minutes left," Poison Scorpion said. "Choose now, or they both explode."

Anthony was trapped.

His younger brother had died for him. The only thing Zachary left behind was Cheryl; he had to protect her.

However…

What about Mabel?

Years ago, to clear obstacles for him, Mabel had deliberately learned explosives and bomb disposal. She was an expert.

Cheryl knew nothing. If no one saved her, she would die for certain.

A desperate, despicable thought took root in his mind…and instantly won.

"One minute!"

"Anthony! You promised you'd protect me. You said Zachary wouldn't die for nothing!"

"I choose Cheryl!" Anthony shouted.

Mabel finally turned her head to look at him.

Everything had gone exactly as she expected.

There was no need for hysterical accusations. No need for tears.

So what if she had fought and bled for him?

She was still discarded.

"You really didn't disappoint me."

She laughed softly, her voice scattered by the sea wind.

"Mabel, you know how to defuse bombs! You can do it yourself, right? You'll be fine! I'll save her and then come back for you!"

Defusing a bomb required freedom of movement.

She was bound hand and foot.

Yet, he expected her to save herself.

It was almost laughable.

Poison Scorpion burst into wild laughter. "Hahaha! What a heartless Don! For the sake of his brother's woman, even his Donna is expendable!"

Keeping his word, he quickly cut Cheryl's restraints and shoved her toward Anthony.

Then, he kicked Mabel hard in the back, sending her, explosives and all, flying into the depths of the ship.

"You've made your choice. Now she dies."

"No!"

Flames exploded upward. Heat and debris roared through the air, instantly swallowing the direction where Mabel vanished.

Half the ship's interior collapsed under the blast.

Fire lit up the night sky and reflected in Anthony's eyes, burning them red with despair.

Half a month later. At a private estate in Northern Europe, the sun shone brightly.Aunt Yellen sat on a rocking chair in the garden, a light blanket draped over her knees. She was knitting a sweater, humming softly to herself. Here, everyone respectfully addressed her as Madre Yellen.Nearby, Mabel held a cotton swab, carefully tending to the wound on Roland's arm."Easy…" Roland hissed and sucked in a breath dramatically.Mabel shot him a helpless glance."Oh, please. Don Price, you've walked through gunfire and bloodshed. Is this tiny scrape really that unbearable?""That's completely different," Roland said seriously. "If you blow on it, it won't hurt anymore."A faint blush crept onto Mabel's face, and her movements grew gentler.Once she finished cleaning the wound, Roland did not pull his hand back. Instead, he wrapped his fingers around hers, his expression turning earnest."Mabel, let me ask you something.""What is it?""You once said you never lie. That's still

Henry died right before his eyes.Once again, Anthony was forced to relive the nightmare of watching someone close to him murdered. The shock drained him of all strength to fight back.He was pinned down by the Soldati and forced to his knees amid the ruins of the manor."Mabel! Come out!"Anthony was covered in blood, howling into the night like a man driven to the edge of madness."Don't you hate me? I'm right here! Come out and kill me!"Stop hiding! I'll let you go! I really will let you go! I'll never use Aunt Yellen to threaten you again! Just come out and see me one last time!"Footsteps echoed. The crowd instinctively parted, forming a path.Mabel appeared, her hand looped calmly through Roland's arm, walking forward at an unhurried pace. She had changed into a khaki coat. Despite the carnage around her, she looked untouched—composed, secure. The moment Anthony saw Roland, memories of the system blackout flashed through his mind. Understanding dawned on him.He laug

The stillness in Bastion Manor was shattered by the sound of hurried footsteps.Anthony was lifting the bowl of soup he had simmered for hours, about to take it to Mabel, when Henry burst in. His face was drained of color, and he did not even knock."Don, something terrible has happened!"His voice trembled as he spoke."In our latest shipment, someone discovered first-tier contraband under international embargo. Someone leaked the information. Interpol has already locked onto our shipping routes and warehouses. Even neighboring countries are involved now. Multiple forces are converging. This looks like an attempt to wipe the Oliver Family out completely.""What?!"The bowl slipped from Anthony's hand and shattered on the floor. In that instant, he understood something: this was a dead end deliberately laid for the Family."Evacuate immediately. Get the cars ready!"He reacted without hesitation, turning and rushing upstairs. As he pushed Mabel's door open, he did not stop to

Thousands of kilometers away, at Roland's private base."Don."His Consigliere pushed the door open, holding an encrypted intelligence file. There was clear confusion on his face."I don't understand. That day at the flower shop, our sniper was already in position."At your command, even if we couldn't eliminate Anthony on the spot, we could've at least caused enough chaos to take Ms. Samson back."Why did you just watch as she was taken away?"Roland took the file and flipped through it calmly."That was her choice."Since she chose to go back with Anthony, she must have had her reasons. If I had forced my way in, I wouldn't have just disrupted her plans; I might have gotten someone she cares about killed, too."He paused, then looked up with a faint smile."And besides, I trust her."She's an eagle, not a caged bird. Temporary compromise is simply preparation for a stronger counterstrike."The Consigliere still looked uneasy."But Anthony is unstable. He's capable of any

Anthony did not move.He did not even think of dodging."As long as it can help you calm down, go ahead. Stab me."My life is yours anyway. You were the one who saved me. If you want to take it back, you can do it anytime. Mabel, as long as you don't leave…you can do whatever you want to me."When she saw him behaving like that, Mabel felt physically sick."Your blood is filthy. Don't dirty my hands," she said coldly."Anthony, put away that act of devotion. I won't kill you only because Aunt Yellen is still in your hands. Let me be clear: just because I've come back doesn't mean there's anything left between us."From today onward, I'll live in a separate building on the estate. Without my permission, you are not to step inside. And don't even think about touching me under the excuse of marriage."She snapped the butterfly knife shut, her tone final."Even if you use Aunt Yellen to threaten me and force me to submit, I have a hundred ways to die right in front of you."You k

The private jet touched down on an island of breathtaking beauty, where a ceremony of unprecedented luxury had been prepared.Aunt Yellen sat in the very front row. She knew nothing of the blood and turmoil along the way. To her, the two unfortunate children had finally found their happy ending. Her face glowed with gentle relief, tears shimmering at the corners of her eyes.Mabel looked at her smile and forced her lips into a stiff curve. The priest began to read the vows."Ms. Mabel Samson, do you take Mr. Anthony Oliver as your husband, in good times and in bad, in wealth and in poverty, in health and in sickness…""I do not."Anthony panicked, lowering his voice. "Mabel, don't make a scene. Aunt Yellen is watching.""I'm not making a scene."In front of everyone, Mabel reached up and tore off her veil."The wedding dress is too heavy. It's suffocating. And this ceremony is so fake it makes me sick."Have you acted long enough?"Her gaze was cold. "Ask yourself this: eve
