Chapter 3

Penulis: Chirpy Seven
We never made it to Camp Three.

The blizzard hit way earlier than anyone expected.

A low rumble rolled through the mountain, like some huge beast waking up.

Edward went ghost-white.

"Avalanche! Get down!"

The world flipped.

A wall of snow tore off the ridge with a roar loud enough to shake everything apart.

The blast slammed me to the ground.

My ears screamed.

Chunks of snow pounded into me.

Ice shot down my collar, so cold my whole body locked up.

I had no idea how long the first wave lasted.

I lay facedown in the snow, dazed, until it hit me.

I was alive.

"Keegan."

My voice came out raw.

Through the blowing snow, someone staggered to his feet.

Keegan.

Snow covered him. A thin line of blood streaked his face.

He didn't come to me.

He ran to Ada.

She lay on a slope fifty feet away, shaking hard and sobbing between ragged breaths.

"Keegan... Keegan, I'm scared... Please..."

He rushed over and pulled her into his arms.

"It's okay. You're okay."

He quickly checked her over.

"Are you hurt?"

"I'm cold..." Ada's teeth chattered. "Keegan... I'm so cold..."

He scanned the area.

Then looked at me.

Not me.

The emergency blanket around my shoulders.

The last one we had.

The others were buried under the snow.

He marched over.

For one stupid second, I thought he was coming to help me up.

Then he grabbed the blanket off my shoulders.

My fingers locked around it.

"Nina, let go."

His voice was sharp.

Urgent.

"Ada's hypothermic. She won't make it."

"What about me?"

My voice came out rough.

Almost like it belonged to someone else.

He hesitated.

"You're stronger. You can take the cold."

Then he ripped the blanket away.

Cold slammed into me from every side.

Brutal.

Bone-deep.

Like being buried alive in ice.

Keegan wrapped my blanket around Ada.

Then he crouched and started unbuckling the safety rope from my waist.

"What are you doing?"

Panic hit hard.

"I can only take one person."

He wouldn't look at me. His fingers flew over the buckle.

"This is the last rope. Edward said there's a crevasse below. We have to stay tied in to cross it.

"Ada's too weak. She won't make it without the rope."

"What about me?"

I grabbed his arm, my nails digging into his jacket.

Finally, he looked at me.

Hesitation flickered in his eyes.

Guilt too.

But mostly?

Certainty.

'You're tough. You'll be fine.'

"Nina, stay here and wait for rescue."

He stood and secured the rope around Ada's waist.

"Edward already sent a distress signal. They'll be here in two hours, tops.

"You can handle it.

"You always do."

He grabbed Ada's hand and headed down.

The blizzard swallowed him whole.

I opened my mouth to call his name.

The wind shredded it.

He never looked back.

Then the second avalanche hit.

The snow vanished beneath my feet.

I dropped into darkness.

My body slammed into the ice wall.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then—

Nothing.

Darkness.

Thirty below.

Closing in from every side.

He said two hours.

He said I'd make it.

Maybe he forgot.

I was still just a person.

I got cold.

I got scared.

I could die.

Keegan never showed up again.Sadie said he quit his job at the research institute and left town.No one knew where he went. Some said Tibermont.Others said Sinjarvia. Some remote, empty place where almost no one lived.Ada left too.She went back to her hometown and, from what I heard, got married.Maybe she never understood what really happened.Maybe she did and chose not to face it.Either way, it didn't matter anymore. Those people. Those memories. They became like the avalanche. They hit hard...Then vanished beneath endless layers of ice.I stayed in the city.Taking photos.Editing them.Picking up commercial shoots here and there.Holding the occasional exhibition.I moved my studio from downtown to an industrial park on the edge of town.Three times the space.Half the rent.A small grove sat outside my window.Every fall, the leaves turned gold.Sadie stopped by once a week with homemade soup."Nina, you lost weight again.""I did not.""You did.

Three months later, one of my outdoor photo series was picked for a citywide exhibition. The show was at the downtown art museum, packed with visitors.Sadie showed up early to help me set up.She rushed around in heels, somehow more nervous than I was."Nina! That mountain shot is way too far off to the side.""It's fine.""No, it's not. I'm getting someone to move it."I smiled and put a hand on her shoulder."Sadie. It's fine. Leave it."Shawn came too.He stood quietly in one corner, studying the photos on the wall.In front of him hung my shot of the northern lights in Norway.A ribbon of emerald stretched across the night sky above a snow-covered field. He stayed there a long time.By three, the gallery was getting busier.I was talking to a curator when I spotted someone at the entrance.Keegan.He'd lost a ton of weight. His cheekbones jutted out. His eyes looked hollow, like something inside him had been scraped clean. He wore the blue shirt I used to love.

Nina's POVA month later, I came back from Norway. The frostbite on my fingers had mostly healed. Fresh skin covered the sores on my left foot. But the biggest change wasn't physical. The crevasse in my heart had finally closed. When I got back, I did three things.First, I changed my number.Second, I moved across town, far from Keegan's building.Third, I threw myself into work. The second Sadie saw me, she looked me over from head to toe. Then she let out a long breath."Good. The light's back in your eyes."I landed a huge commercial shoot for an outdoor brand. For the next two months, the whole team lived at work. I'd spend every night in the studio editing until after midnight. Whenever I got exhausted, I'd put my head down on the desk and steal a quick nap.I was so busy, I barely had time to think.Sometimes I'd wake up in the middle of the night.Outside my window, the city glowed with warm amber lights. Not that icy blue-gray light from the crevasse. That wa

Third-Person POVKeegan hadn't been able to reach Nina in twenty days.Every call hit the same cold recording."The number you have dialed is not accepting your calls."Every text bounced back [Not Delivered].He sat on the couch, staring at his phone, thumb hovering over the screen. Then he snapped and tossed it aside. He shot to his feet and paced the living room.He was pissed.Pissed Nina wouldn't answer.Pissed she wouldn't let him explain.Pissed she'd left without a word.Yeah, he'd screwed up on the mountain. He shouldn't have given Ada both the emergency blanket and the safety rope. But it had all happened so fast. He'd had to choose.Nina was the strongest woman he knew. She'd climbed three peaks over thirteen thousand feet. Crushed him in every fitness test.He honestly thought she could hold on.Two hours.Just two hours. He hadn't meant to leave her. He'd panicked.Panicked that Ada would die right in front of him.She was only twenty-three, with ba

Tromsø, Norway.Three hundred kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. When the plane landed, snow stretched forever beyond the window. But this snow felt different.Quiet.Soft.It covered the little cabin roofs like thick blankets.Shawn rented two cabins across a narrow path, both facing the fjord. He never tried to move into mine.Never pushed to get closer.Every morning, he left breakfast outside my door, knocked twice, and walked away."Don't you have work?""I'm on break. I take a month off every winter.""You come here every year?""Yeah. It's quiet."That was Shawn. He didn't talk much.Didn't push.He just stayed close, steady as a rock. For the first few days, I did nothing.I curled up on the rug, wrapped in a blanket, watching snow drift past the window in endless layers. My body was still healing. My frostbitten fingers would suddenly burn with sharp pain. The cracked skin on my left foot made me limp. But none of that hurt the most. The worst part

I was unconscious for four days.Keegan never left my side.He sat beside my bed, eyes swollen, stubble covering his face.He looked ten years older.Holding my hand, he apologized again and again."I'm sorry, Nina. I'm so sorry."I really thought you'd make it. I thought rescue would get there within two hours."I got it wrong. This is my fault. I never should've..."I never looked at him.Not once since I woke up.I wasn't trying to shut him out.I just didn't know how to face him.How was I supposed to look at him? What was I supposed to see in his eyes? He'd almost gotten me killed. And still...His tears were real.Sadie came the next day.The second she walked in, I saw her red-rimmed eyes. Her hands were shaking."Nina..."Her voice was so rough, she barely sounded like herself.I gave her a small smile."I'm okay."She broke.Bent over my bed and burst into tears.Keegan stood nearby. "Sadie...""Shut up." She didn't even look at him. "How dare you co
